 how do you DELETE / BACKSPACE in terminal, when in VI editor

ok, just the other day i was using Mac's terminal and VIed a file.

i just found out i can't back space. tongue.gif weird characters appear.

so what exactly is the replacement key for backspace in VI editor?

i also just found out that if i VIed on my mac (local) then the backspace works fine.

it's just that when i SSH to some place then VI a file, that's where the backspace won't work thus the CTRL+H comes in.
