Travel to Japan under Rm1,000? Maybe 1 or 2 days can la.

For 12 days, you can try cuti-cuti Malaysia. Im not sure if you can do Thailand/Vietnam?Cambodia for under 1k in 12 days.

RM 1k, u def could go many places for 1 week ... go thailand ... khaosan bckpacker heaven ~ last time laa ...

Might as well BKK + CHiang Mai on train ...

Here's my elaboration.
KL or which ever part to BKK - usually an overnite train, go the 2nd class aircond bed enough, preferrable Bottom

Accomodation, for solo, usually go and search for some hostel, no need to be in khaosan, really. (The only thing is RM is low to Baht)

Food, eat of the street hawker.
Transport - do home work and use the BTS + Walking / Tuktuk (beware the scams) or Boat, you will go places. I usually stay near the place I mainly wanna go.

BKK - Chiang Mai is the same overnite train. So for the trip, you would spend like 4 nites on train (back n forth)

Chiang Mai is actually cheaper if you are going duo, solo ~ it would be slight same price for getiing 2 pax.

On the way back, if u have the extra cash, you could try 1st Class cabin room on the train ~ something we dont get to do often ...

Did something like this years ago...

Day 1 KL-Hatyai overnight bus
Day 2 Hatyai-Bkk overnight train (arrived around 6am)
Day 3 Walk from Hualompong to Khao San road.
Day 4 Bkk-Chiangmai overnight bus
Day 5 Chiangmai
Day 6 Chiangmai (night bus back to BKK)
Day 7 BKK
Day 8 BKK-Phuket bus
Day 9 Phuket
Day 10 Phuket-Hatyai bus
Day 11 Hatyai-KL bus

Budget: less than RM500 on transport & guesthouse.

Mandi in Hualompong station after 2 days no shower...

Read up the places (wikitravel) and print some maps or buy a guide book on Thailand (Lonely Planet is good).

Accommodation in Thailand is very easy to find as it is very, very touristic with millions and millions of visitors every year.... abundance of guesthouses (cheap hotels) in popular cities like Bangkok and Chiangmai. Not necessary to book in advance, and this is ideal since we don't have to plan a strict itinerary; staying an extra day if the place and guesthouse is nice enough for another day or cut short and move the next day.

Snacks and drinks are too easy to find... as there're 7/11s almost everywhere, sometimes just around the corner or across the street from each other. smile.gif

If you find the road trip (as per my above itinerary) is taking too much time travelling than actual time spend on the locations, then maybe fly back from Chiangmai. And maybe add in Chiangrai - about 200km north of Chiangmai, 3 hours by bus.

You can based at Chiangrai and do day trips to Mae Sai (northenmost point of Thailand and border to Myanmar) and golden triangle.

imo....

spend too much time in the bus instead of enjoying trips...
too ambitious to cover too many places that were far apart within 11 days......rushing from place to place like rushing a project with a tight deadline...
good 2 consider to cut down the numbers of visited places + spend more time in each locations.

Yes, it's a gruelling road trip and itinerary... I skipped Phuket, and spend an extra night in Chiangmai. The 3 days there was something like this:

Day 1 hired tuk-tuk (that 3 wheels 'taxi' or songthaew (meaning "2 benches", that are found behind those pick-ups/minibus) to go around town and 3 different cottage industries - umbrella, lacquerware and silverware. (Not sure these cottage industries still there or popular, as only done it during my very 1st time in Chiangmai which was many, many years ago.)

Day 2 take a day-tour package: elephant park, ride elephant along jungle trek, rafting on a bamboo raft, visit a hill tribe village, and visit a waterfall.

Day 3 go up Doi Suthep... bus back to BKK at night.

Hard to explain what is travelling to someone who do not like to travel... it is not really a vaction or holiday to splurge yourself - of course this would be nice if we can afford to, but anyone who truly likes to 'travel' will anyhow do so as long as it is within his/her budget.

Definitely I not just like, but love traveling. I always have solo one, even sometimes my close friends ask for joining, without doubt I'll reject their request. I must agree with u, travel is "not really a vaction or holiday to splurge yourself", but more, it's a lifelong memories, it's about the people u meet, the things u do, the taste u ates, the feeling u have, the thought sudden came to ur minds to redefine life, and of coz and more.

Well, not everyone like the same thing ...
Been going to BKK like since I was around 8 years old ... tried almost every method ~ BUT still prefer the Train method. Somehow the train ride there is diff from KTM ... I live in Kelantan, and to go BKK we go Sg Golok and pass through the conflict zone ... heck quite usual for most kelantanese which going BKK mean taking the flight from Narathiwat ~ which is the only 1 flight per day operating daily from that airport.

RM is soaring now ... you might not be able to go about with RM 500 on the same init ~ RM 100 could get about BAHT 800 currently.
