There were a few DJ "schools" setup and I checked out a few of them..... but that's about 2 years back. Will check and see if they are still around.

But last time I checked, a full "course" would cost you around RM2500 onwards.... with that kind of cash, you can invest in a better turntable and get one of those DJ-How to DVDs or Books you can find in MPH or Borders. I would suggest that instead of taking classes out right, because unlike guitar, you can pretty much learn the basics from books or DVDs. I know. I started with DVDs and Books too.

Once you felt that you can progress no further, THEN think about classes.

Yes. I personally learned from DVDs and Books.

Are you aiming to learn Dance/Club style DJ-ing or Hip-Hop/Battling style DJ-ing? There's a big difference between the 2.

Dance/Club DJ-ing, you have to focus on mixing (and choosing) two different songs together and blend them seamlessly. You'll need a good ear to know the beats, the rhythms, the tempo and key of the song syou want to mix together.

Hip-Hop/Battle style of DJ-ing would be the more "flashy" of the two, where you need to learn alot of scratch techniques as well as manipulating the crossfader alot, not to mention listening for samples and beats.

Both styles takes tremendous work to perfect and get right....

For me, I'm more towards the Hip-Hop/Battle style DJ discipline.

Also, do you already have your own DJ setup? And which style is it more configured towards to?
A Battle-Style DJ would require a very good crossfader/mixer and 2 decks that can handle the punishment of scratching.
A Club-Style DJ would require a decent mixer with more focus on a deck that can handle different speeds and tempo.

And are you looking towards traditional vinyl, CDs or Digital Vinyl?

hmm.. i see my interest is to the battle style..

but.. however.. im still like.. new to this.. erm.. setup is ok..

maybe i would get a medium entry level setup.. even the guitars already cost so much.. so i guess it wont hurt that bad?

An average quality setup would cost you around RM3500....
You'll need 2 turntables, a mixer, Needles and cartridges, headphones and speakers... best if you use DJ-quality speakers and headphones instead of stuff you can buy off Low Yat.

You can get Starter kits which contains most of the things as stated above from Numark, Stanton and other big DJ equipment companies.
Of course, if you have cash you can go for the DJ STANDARD of 2x Technics 1200.... tongue.gif Which brand new (IF you can find them) retails for about RM5000 each.

Seems like your heart is set on classes, and I respect that.
But if you're willing to spend RM2500 for lessons, just try out a RM80 DVD on Turntable-ism before you go for the big guns...... That's all I'm saying man.

there's a lot of DJ schools here actually; Groove Syndicate at Sri Hartamas, Bionic at Times Square and Excessive Records at Bukit Bintang (near Lot 10) you can check those places out.

i've done club DJ a few yrs, and completely self-taught.

but yea, like what blacktrix says.
the 2nd method, you be better off buying a dvd to learn from first.
then again, tom morello never needed a turntable to do all that battle *puke* stuff.

have to agree with everyone here....turntables isn't very hard to master (especially mixing). you just have to learn to beatmatch (the hard part). after that it's smooth sailing. however if you're interested in scratch/battling. some intense everyday practice is needed. took me a full year of no life practice at home time to learn how to scratch hehe. i recommend Superseal by Qbert as a beginner's scratch record. infinite loops of ahhhhssss and freeesssshhh thumbup.gif

I bought the 2 Vinyl instructional book and came with alot of samples and beats to play around with. Then got an extra vinyl by DJ Rob Swift (of X-Ecutioners) and just jammed on that, honing my skills.

Damn..... all this talk of DJing makes me want to get more DJ gear again!!!!

tumpang thread bro. i'm also keen on learning the art of turntablism and would like to learn mixing and scrathing, though i am only interested in playing hiphop. but budget is tight now so i am deciding whether to enroll in a dj school or just use the money and get a decent setup and some self-learn books and videos. just for my reference, how much would a setup cost me?
better yet, what is the cheapest set i can get in he market now brand new? is it better to buy individual pieces or buy a packaged starter pack? oh yea, since i wanna scratch, i would prefer a vinyl set. please advise
