QUOTE(alucard_my @ Apr 1 2009, 12:16 AM) I you wanna know if any part of your body were used in your swimming, just touch them. If it is warm even in the cold water, then the muscle groups there succumbed to workouts. If cold = nothing. I swam all styles, but find that swimming alone can't really help you in getting a flat stomach. Abdominals are divided into upper, lower abdominals, intercostals (spelling) and obelique (spelling). All of these has different sets of exercises to tone them. 2 side lines? Try to hold a long stick, legs shoulder apart and twist your body on the waist. Maintain your vision in front. Only swing your body using waist. During each swing, tense your stomach and at the end of the swing, press hard and then release, not fully, but still tensed. In time, you'll have slim waist. Smallbug! when are we swimming again? What happened to Sky and Axley? aiya... your side so quiet... thought you dropped off the face of the earth can lar.. any given Sunday...

I have been trying to learn swimming (breast stroke) for the past 12days.
The problem is that I do not know how to breathe while doing a breast stroke. I understand that I should breathe in when my head is coming above water. But my head is not coming above the water surface! All I am able to do now is to take in a deep breathe and swin approximately half the width of the swimming pool. Then, in order to breathe again, I end up taking a break and standing up on my feet. Can anyone help me to undestand what could be wrong here? It seems to me that I am not able to achieve a horizontal position in water while swimming. What could I do to achieve this? Could that be the reason that my head is not coming above the water surface? For a beginner, is breast stroke the right one to start with?
I am quite frustrated that I am not able to get it right. Any help, advice will be deeply appreciated

All you need to do is to rotate your head upwards only.

Breaststroke is usually the easiest for most.
Don't have the tendency of rotating your WHOLE body towards a vertical position in order to breathe. This will greatly slow you down.
Practise treading water first while using the stroke. Eventually you will get the timing.

Float? Pull buoiy you mean? My coach has never asked us to do butterfly with a pull buoy o_O We use it for freestyle pull. I dunno, maybe you can try if you're just focusing on your arms?
