You need to clean install. Don't worry about the activation because the moment your PC upgraded to Windows 10, your PC will automatically registered to Microsoft. Then you can permanently reformat and clean install Windows 10. Even you can replace to new SSD or used HDD to install Windows 10 as long as you keep install your Windows 10 in the same PC machine ID.my advice, dont install Windows 10
If your previous Windows 7/8.1 got virus issue or system problem, you cannot just blame Windows 10 sucks after you upgrade. It is only happens on your own PC but 99% of other Windows 10 users doesn't facing the problem because I was clean installed Windows 10 to my PC. I did boot & clean installed Windows 10 Pro with a bootable USB drive.
