Need help: getting things out of macbook!

Hi all..
I want to copy my things out of my macbook, bcoz its almost full and also i am thinking to move it into windows pc.
What makes me headache is, to copy big files from mac, the external hd has to be formatted to apple format.. but then, cant transfer those files into windows if hd in apple format.. my things practically stucked in apple environment? Can anyone advise me how to do this.. thanks in advance
