The TurboSIM trick should only work on v1 SIM cards. Most SIM cards in the market today are v2 or v3. So don't rush out and buy the TurboSIM just yet until you've done your ground work and also have the guts to cut up your current SIM. My 2 cents.

Btw, the battery heats up the back of the iPhone pretty hot after > 30 mins non-stop use. My only main gripe so far.

Oh yeah, and that stupid recessed headphone jack that won't fit any other headphones/earbuds besides the iPod earphones. Sorry that's two complaints. tongue.gif

Need to buy something like this to use with existing earphones: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/headphoneadapter/

The wiki boys released their FREE unlocking software. tested it out and the software works with local operators where i am. haven't tested with malaysian telco yet, so no comments on that part.

i hardwired my other iphone earlier which also works. roamed in singapore and works on all 3 operators. however, the wiki software is a much better solution since don't have to pry open the iphone and risk soldering.

Since I'm posting here, might as well share some of my gripes re. iPhone.

The SMS interface is nice, with an instant messanger chat-like interface.

However, you cannot send SMS to multiple receipients in a single message i.e. if I want to send the same SMS to say 3 parties, I gotta type the same SMS 3x and send it to 3 persons individually!!

Also, cannot forward SMS received.

The iPhone will NOT recognise any of the contacts stored on your existing SIM card. So you need to copy it all over to your iPhone from scratch.

Caller ID only works if your Contacts does not include the country code pre-fix (i.e. if my Contact list includes say +6012 for Mr. A, when Mr. A calls, my iPhone won't caller ID it, but just shows the number. When I remove +6012 from his Contacts info, then Mr. A shows up on caller ID when he calls me).

Edit -

Battery drains pretty fast. Won't last a single day on medium/heavy usage of just purely sms/phone calls. I can't imagine how fast if I even use it for ipod features.

Also, battery heats up my face on long-time calls.

Wei and Terranova,

Just a simple question

Do you think the iphone is worth all the hoo haa?

I was really excited about it. I Like pda's in general but more particularly on qwerty based (using 838pro now)
I might consider Iphone when it is release but

the poor battery life and it really long list of restrictions kinda make me think again.

Do you think there will be an software update to rectify those minor restrictions or even on battery efficiency? Strange, MAC OS have always been an excellent power saver...  sad.gif  sad.gif

I believe most of my gripes can be resolved as they are mostly software issues - nothing that a software/firmware update won't cure. apple may be experienced with computer OS but looks like they're still noobish when it comes to phone features and usability.

the only thing that concerns me is that the unlock will fail after we upgrade, so i'm tempted to resist any updates and let someone else be the lab rat. smile.gif

lexta is correct - ipod features with screen off doesn't drain battery - used it on a long haul flight and still managed good leftover battery juice. but moot point as having an iphone means using it as a phone for calling and sms, not for multimedia. on that token, battery life is not great if you are a medium/heavy user making calls and sms.

One more thing - bluetooth feature is currently pretty much useless to me since u can't transfer files using bluetooth or even pair with another iphone(!). the bluetooth's only usage now is to pair it with apple's BT headset.

Actually I wouldn't call Apple newbies in phone design, they're just very American. If you've lived in the US for any amount of time, you'll realize that most of the adult users will use voice mail rather than SMS and would dial the number rather than search through the phone addressbook. This is reflected in the iPhone design where SMS is a bit lacking and visual voice mail is relatively powerful, and the addressbook lacks a proper search feature.

Valid point.

Guess they'll need to change their pov when iPhone hits our part of the world - over 7 billion sms per day iirc.

mudevilz & zc_squash, the iphone comes shipped with an AT&T SIM card in the sim slot. When u plug the iphone into your notebook/pc's usb slot & run iTunes, you will be greeted with an activation splash screen. click CANCEL and you will then be brought to the iPhone settings page, where u can update the firmware, sync data, etc.

Pretty expensive compared to their US counterparts.

Nothing exciting really .... was hoping the 3G and 16GB version would surface.

Sorry but I think I should remind ppl again here .... if u plan to use the iPhone as an iPod Touch i.e. as a multimedia device, pls pls bear in mind that the iPhone doesn't accept std headsets/earplugs jacks .... unless u buy an adapter from third party like Griffin. In other words, you can only use the std crappy white earplugs from Apple which for me is not that great (audio quality wise) and fits poorly in my ears (one size fits all). If you can live with the bundled earplugs from Apple, then of course you should have no problem.

On a brighter note, at least the iPhone has speakers, unlike the iPod Touch. Hahaha .... BUT BUT the iPod Touch has that cute little stand to make the unit sit up diagonally, whereas I find myself having to hold the iPhone or lean against something to make it sit up, not good for watching videos on the plane.

I guess the reason repetitive Qs are being asked over and over again is because this thread is 61 pages long right now and there is no FAQ on page 1. Someone with the initiative and drive should just do one up - don't look at me, I'm lazy.

I just realised something yesterday as I was unpacking the new Nano (which came without a charger btw if anyone's interested). The iPhone USB charger is the same one for iPods (5V 1.5A).

To another question posed earlier, to set EDGE/GPRS, just type in the APN name of the telco and if required, the username and password. Go to : Settings -> General -> Network -> EDGE -> APN. Call your telco to get the necessary info.

I picked this up from the internet, not sure reliable or not.

Operator: - DIGI
GPRS APN: - diginet
Username: - {blank}
Password: - {blank}

Operator: - Maxis
GPRS APN: - internet.gprs.maxis

Operator: - Timecel
GPRS APN: - timenet.com.my
Username: - {blank}

Operator: - TM Touch
GPRS APN: - internet
