Need to ask a few questions. I am thinking to unlock my iPhone based on the recent method.

1. Where can I get a simcard writer/reader?
2. Where can I get a silvercard?
3. Is maxis simcard v1?

Please help. Thanks

There is an alternative and apparently it works without the need to buy a simcard writer, silvercard and with any simcard. Here are some links to read up on. The product is called Turbo SIM and it acts as a proxy between your phone and SIM. You don't have to do anything with your SIM.

Link to Turbo SIM

Read this whole thread to see the timeline of discovery

And, of course, several threads about Turbo SIM - at the Wiki iPhone Discussion site

Should be able to give a more definite answer next week when I can try this.

The reason why the SIM cloning only works with V1 compliant SIM cards is that you need to extract your KI and for that you cannot extract such information from V2 or V3 cards. Cloning your SIM card is, of course, illegal.

With Turbo SIM, you are not cloning your card and you do not need to extract your KI which is your Key Identifier. That information belongs to your mobile service provider and it would be also questionable for you to extract that.

Turbo SIM was not conceived to hack the iPhone. It's an old legitimate SIM Toolkit that allows you to add functionality to your SIM. The guys at iPhone WIKI found out that the iPhone calls for the IMSI of AT&T SIM twice only when the phone boots up. Someon then rode a program code that can be written to the Turbo SIM. This effectively allows the iPhone to access the IMSI of the AT&T SIM card twice and then switch you to your local mobile service provider. It acts as a somewhat proxy switch. You do not do anything to your local mobile SIM card. You program the IMSI of AT&T into the TurboSIM and use it together with your mobile SIM.

Having said that, my advice is to wait for another week or so, follow the threads on it, then make your own decision. And you cut a small notch of the plactic part of yur SIM up to ensure the Turbo SIM sits flush. Your Sim with this notch is still usable, without the Turbo SIM.

I got my iPhone yesterday! Learning to jailbreak it and installing apps on it was HELL! I'm no noobie when it comes to these things but if you have vista-64 bit.. watch out!  A lot of things doesn't really work! tongue.gif

Best to use a regular vanilla 32-bit windows XP for the task!

By the way - anyone knows how to set up GPRS/Edge with maxis? biggrin.gif
