Iphone is not AT&T's; so better Q shud b does Apple sell iPhone without subcription. I won't give u straight answer but I think u already know d answer. It's both no and yes. And yeah I answer no first b4 yes.
*
yup aware of that.

QUOTE(irwan6179 @ Sep 15 2007, 06:38 AM)
simple answer. yes at&t sell iphone without requiring any activation. I went there, said i want Iphone without activation, they asked which one, I said 8 gig, I gave them 430usd(taxed), they give me the iphone. I get out from there, without anybody waiting at the door forcing me to activate tongue.gif

o alright. so basically you can get the phone without the need to subscribe to the telco / sign contract.

coz normally you wont get that in UK, unless you pay the phone as sim free set at much expensive price.

QUOTE(FoX^ @ Sep 15 2007, 12:39 PM)
Erm, i dont really understand what u mean but with my bulk u just pay either 2000 or 2500 depending on whether u want to share the risk with me, and guarantee can use with digi and celcom. I believe maxis sooner or later oso will be able to use but... i dont really care.

Re firmware updates relocking the phone, i think probably will lock the phone but why would u need to update the firmware if its working fine?
*
got it! above explains why now.

How is AT&T charging you? Did you open an AT&T account? Are you roaming from Malaysia (??!!)

I just tried the new Gui Unlock method. My finding:

1. I can use maxis simcard in the US (finally!!)
2. I can receive sms and call in
3. but cannot call out and sms out
4. *122# works and tells me the baki
5. topup using *111* also works

this result is using maxis sim card while roaming (under AT&T carrier). so malaysia result may differ.

iPhone without contract from apple will not be in the price you see now.
Apple get a cut from ATT as ppl subscribe to the call plans. And ATT also have a deal of bearing some cost for the iPhone. That's why it's ATT exclusive. If not, why you think Apple want to play nice with ATT... lol.

The price for iPhone compnents is actually just around USD199. So, seeing how Apple is selling it at 599 and now 399, they're making enough money to pay back their research cost. They're tied to AT&T because of the 10% revenue sharing and so they can roll out features like Visual Voicemail. They could have easily not do so, just less $$ for them and since they have no experience, it's a good move. They tried it with Motorola, and now AT&T, soon they might even start becoming a telco themselves

1million iPhones with 10% revenue is like 7 million per month without doing anything. 2 years = 168million. Check ur facts.

USD199? And who told you so?
http://www.tuaw.com/2007/01/19/iphone-manu...t-245-83-maybe/

And how you know they're earning enough? And how you know how much is their R&D cost? You work for them?
laugh.gif making a lot of assumption there huh?

Aren't your last statement supporting mine?

I believe most of the cons of the iPhone can be sorted by just a firmware update, for example the sms forward, e-mail attachments and stuff.

hehe amusing. i think the people should be responding is the people who is using an iphone as we speak.

you don't have to subscribe to AT&T when you purchased an iphone from the US. when you buy an iphone, you are required to activate it via itunes. so if you dont activate it, then you just have a locked iphone. but since there's countless ways to unlock it, then..lol...

theres so many paranoid people in this thread.

doesn't mean when u purchased the iphone for 399USD, its compulsory that you sign up with AT&T and get billed monthly..thats entirely up to you..not them..
