Yes shipping is expensive. Mine are USD90++ with FedEX International Priority.
Avoid using UPS as you might have to do the SIRIM declaration/application yourself.

Actually when I checked, Fedex for one unit is $90+, but for the second and third unit, it's only around $20+ extra. So if you can get 3 people to share one shipment, the cost per unit goes down significantly.

For those of you who are bringing the phone in from the US, how do you plan to deal with the battery replacement? It will probably be ok if the model eventually brought here is the same, but what if it isn't? Will Apple Malaysia provide support for products not released here?

Simple. Import loh. lol.
It's not like the battery will "kong" on the next month. With a good care, it should last long enough.

i found some articles from net related to the maxis receive call problem:

************************
its all about the network not the sim card , there is conflict in edge and the incoming calls .

the edge in zain/maxis use nom2 and the incoming calls in the iphone use nom1 ,you can check just do this :

*3001#12345#* and pressing Call

check this line :

Tap GPRS Information.

you'll find zain/maxis use nom2 ,and celcom/digi use nom1 (what iphone use) .

someone can test this with maxis iphone pls?

so zain/maxis should change the system from GPRS network to 3G network ,if we wanna use the iphone in zain/maxis .
*****************************
I haven't been in the telecom field for a while now; but I remember than NOM (Network Operation Mode) refers to the GPRS Capabilities.

NOM1: Mobile phones can have multiple packet/circuit connection; which allows the phone to recieve calls while using EDGE/GPRS.
NOM2: Mobile phones can be 'attached' to the gprs network; but it can't recieve data and voice simultaneosly.
NOM3: Mobile Phones can not have both services connected; it must be either data (packet) or voice (circuit).

Applying the NOM theory to the logic of the iPhone not operating on the zain/maxis network: if we completely disable edge (or just stop using it), it should work. However, that isn't the case .. as the phone still won't recieve calls. This is also supported by the inability to recieve calls while having another line (its rings once then the call fails); since the initial calls holds the data on a nom2 network; the second call should be to come through.
*******************************
iphone use nom1 and zain/maxis nom2
you can check it by : *3001#12345#*
and check Tap GPRS info you'll find it nom2 , while wataniya use nom1 .

tips:
nom1 3G networks
nom2 GPRS networks

so if we want to the iphone on zain/maxis they should change the system network from GPRS to 3G.
************************************

FYI: zain is another telco in kuwait also having the same problem like Maxis: cannot receive call.

not sure is the same problem like above or not hmm.gif

Hmmmm , had my first glitch today, concerning text messages and missed calls. Left the phone on the car seat while driving, didnt notice that by the time car was parked , and the iPhone retrieved, there's already 3 missed calls, and 4 incoming text messages. Tried opening the text message, and got booted out into the main screen every single time. Luckily had my trusted UMPC with me, did a Restore, and everything went okay back again. The unlock is permanent in firmware 1.0.2, but i had to re-enable Youtube to get it running back up again. *FYI, the unlock i use disabled Youtube, but a simple batch file kicks it back to life again.* .The rest is a simple sync back into the iPhone.

Tried logging into my iTunes account, but been getting error messages since yesterday, is the whole damn thing down, or is it disabling my access 'cos im back in KL, not LA?

Question to current iPhone users, how are you protecting your iPhone? Got myself a clear case with protective film (screen protector on this part of the world, it's called tongue.gif), as well as leather holster (again, called "pouch" back here). The clear case's been working wonders had to keep a wipe cloth that comes with the phone with me all the time every single time im poking the thing to life. tongue.gif

But that's of little concern now, where's my iTunes access goddamnit!?

P/S: Is there any market for a 5G 30Gb iPod Video around here (for immediate sale, i mean), or should i keep it? The roomy 160Gb Coverflow version had me salivating already.

I've had no problems with iTunes when going back and forth between the US and Malaysia. It doesn't check where you are but Streamyx doesn't help. Try a hotspot, they sometimes provide faster download times.

I sold my 5G 30GB to a friend for less than RM600 and that was in May. You won't get much for it here in Malaysia, people are cheap, but particularly so here biggrin.gif Also don't forget that if you use TV out as much as I do, the current cable simply won't work since Apple's "upgrading" to component video out. I'm keeping my 5.5G iPod Video.

Informative post hokiannu, perhaps someone should sticker this post until a solution comes out of it. Does maxis realize that they will lose customers if this isn't fixed? Can they fix their hardware? I doubt they will for such a minority group of people.

Thanks for the concern tishahan. I know what I'm doing. I wont be bothered with 3G iphone. Neither I want the larger capacity now. And I'm pretty confident there won't be another price slash coming months

The 4GB suits my needs. And I don't want to wait till it went out of stock wink.gif

Cheers.

Mobile number portability has been talked about in Malaysia for several years, but I've not seen any realistic date on when it will ever be implemented...

So, the answer is no for now. I won't keep my hopes up.

Another question to those having iPhones unlocked. Does the Maxis call-in no-service blanketing refers to the ability to call out and receive calls on a Maxis sim card/call account, or does it also extend to the ability to receive calls from Maxis users to an iPhone user as well?

To put it simply:-

iPhone on Maxis to Maxis/Digi/Celcom =! call out and receive calls

What about iPhone users on Digi/Celcom to normal cellphone users on Maxis? Are iPhone users on these networks subject to the same restrictions, as in users using iPhone on Digi/Celcom network unable to receive calls or make calls to users on Maxis?

Am i making any bloody sense here? rclxub.gif

String,

With the software unlock on digi and celcom you can make and receive calls to all operators.

With Maxis, you can make but cannot receive calls from all operators.

Doesn't matter what telco is on the other side of the connection in other words...

(I don't have an iPhone myself (yet) but have a buddy that does)
