Hi, I'm very interested in starting out as a freelance photographer as my career. Just want to get to know more about a few things before I venture into it.

What should I take note before making my own portfolio?
" - as a freelance photographer
" - the risk and etc.

So, would photos like scenery/model photoshoot be a good category? Can i mix those 2 category into one portfolio?

i'd say anything is a good category as long as you're passionate in it.

No. Don't mix it. If client have specific in mind, they won't bother looking at your overall mixed photos. If you open up a photoshoot studio, perhaps can mix wedding, graduation, family, portrait, etc that reflect studio lighting. Depends on what kind of work you do.

1. shoot actively for a year, build up your photography knowledge and foundation
2. get to know some professional (people who work for money, not those self proclaim pro with loard of lens and body.), if possible, tag along for some jobs.
3. if you cant tag along any job, (depending on genre) you can pay to join shooting event, wedding workshop, model photoshoot, phototrip (local or oversea), local developer competition(interior/exterior structure genre) etc
4. those picture can be your starting portfolio, until you grab some Actual jobs and you can slowly build from there.
5. there is no limit in photography (but limit in manipulation aka photoshop) so go wild with mixing up the genre.

portfolio should be wide and specific. landscape is landscape. portrait is portrait. if landscape portrait, then name it landscape portrait.

OR, you like to play life in HARDCORE mode...
1. keep shooting, dont excessive watermark, keep sharing... keep doing repeat repeat repeat.
2. the moment your pic get leaks around or went viral around, you know you are GOOD enough wink.gif and people will come to you automatically. this time, you can charge whatever u like and people still pays.

If your portfolio of photos is EVERYTHING then it might not lend much confidence to viewers.

Better go with specialization, select only a few categories of your interest.

If you like to do Landscape and Portrait, it's fine but just keep your portfolio split. When people are interested in your landscape photography service then you send them your landscape portfolio, likewise for portraiture. Don't send them rojak.

Thank you for so much advice. It really helps me a lot on how I should start out my portfolio and as a freelance photographer, will keep all these points in mind.

What ieR mentioned is correct but it's not the only way.

I went about without tagging along with people. I shoot the food I eat and the hotels I stay in. biggrin.gif I did it again and again and again.

The one day I checked out MPA http://www.masterphotographersassociation.co.uk/ (my profile not there yet, updating) and from there I got pointers from qualified professionals to identify the flaws of my work.

After that I went on to improve the quality of my work and subsequently got qualified and all.

Ok well that's just my experience, bottom line is you need to shoot more and if possible get experienced people to give you pointers.

Edit and curating your portfolio is important.

What do I mean by edit is, choosing the photos and arrange it.
Curating is during arrangement..
Categorize it using the storyline by seeing the composition and the stories of the image.

Only select your best photo (12-30 images) for your portfolio.

Others, you can post it on phlog or your social media account.

Besides from a lot of shooting/practicing, try follow some established photographers' blogs. Those who are willing to share their techniques. Try to understand their thought process - try did he/she chose that subject matter, the angle, the gear choice, the editing work and things like that.

Here's one of them: https://www.joeyl.com/blog/all

Hope this helps smile.gif
