tested merlin, couldnt load any of the 4k movies.... keep showing an error

guys, need some advice

im running kodi on an asus htpc, connected to a sony soundbar ct790, and only link to tv
the soundbar is a 2.1 system, i try streaming shows from kodi, even playing files from kodi, the display(soundbar) will only show 2.0 even if the file is with 5.1 audio
i have set audio passthrough , but to no avail

any guys here got any idea?

kodi 5.1 streams work very well for full AVR thru hdmi once u set to pass thru.

depending on yr tv, arc may not work.

and soundbars are tricky for complex audio streams.
4k... yr best bet is sanctuary/silent hunter.

the rest either don't work or are bs labels.

im not using arc, htpc to sound bar to tv

i will try the 4k file again , but i just found out, my htpc not 4k enable on the hdmi cry.gif cry.gif

The Sony HT-CT790 looks capable.. Leaving the HTPC suspect.
1. Does the HTPC actually support such audio?
2. Compatible with the soundbar?
3. If using toslink, there are limitations.. Go HDMI whenever.. Minimum version 1.4.
4. Does the HTPC support Kodi's audio passthrough tech?
That's your problem right there... TM's supplied STB box is crap.. Invest in a proper media player.. The Nvidia Shield is great!... Runs Android TV OS, which is different from the regular Android OS. See YouTube for performance.

1.i dont need the htpc to support, just need it to pass through right?
2. hdmi spec shud be compatible
3. i can try optical, i think i saw an output on the htpc
4. im not too sure on this

technically this soundbar is 2.1, i try settings on the kodi, where i set it to 2.1, sounded horrible, set it back to 2.0 and enable pass through sounds better, but still dont get anything from the sub

For 4k video, all components need to be complaint.... source, player, cable, video display. One of them not compliant, wont work.

Audio... soundbars are tricky with so many types of bars, files, codecs, connections, settings. U just need to try one by one, use the best u can get.

Which is why a full AVR is much better. Just connect hdmi, all is auto detect, all displayed, no hassle.

ya, so i can only watch 4k from the built in netflix n youtube itself on the tv

anyway thats not my main concern, audio is

u familiar in htpc? this is the 1st time my foray into htpc , all these while i have been using media players and avr

frankly i havent been in touch with audio for the past 2 years, but from wat i rememebr ddatmos n dtsx you need those new speakers rather than the just the avr

i think for now truehd n hdma shud do enough

So when are you testing optical out for 5.1?
*
need to go back to my old house n search for the spare optical cable

but the headache thing is this, if i set to optical, it means my hdmi cannot be connected to the soundbar, it has to go to the tv itself, and on the soundbar setting, optical input is set to TV mode, which im using for ARC (hdmi from the tv to soundbar)

dunno how it would be hahhahaha
