Based on your description, it does appear to be a device compatibility issue. Hardware and or software is incapable of decompressing and playing such files. But yeah, you can try playing directly from a USB drive, just to rule out any networking bottleneck issues. As for playing it directly on the TV via its usb port, I strongly suspect that won't work. There are only a few TVs with inbuilt player and processing powers, powerful enough to handle 10-bit x.265 files. TV manufacturers tend to focus more on picture quality rather than native playback of high compression files.
If it was an AVR issue, at least video will play, but no sound or its downgraded to the next lower level HD Audio format. Your AVR inability to not output sound will not crash Kodi.
I have tried 3 files today (all MKVs):
xxxxx.2017.BluRay.2160p.x265.10bit.HDR.4Audio.mUHD
xxxxx.2017.UHD.BluRay.2160p.x265-10bit.TrueHD.7.1.3Audios
xxxxx.2018.UHD.BluRay.2160p.x265-10bit.DTS-HD.MA7.1
1. USB drive slotted into my Sony Smart TV's USB Port :
To my surprise, it is able to play all these 3 files, with ability to switch all channels (ie. AAC or TuneHD) to different language ! No lags nothing..
2. USB drive slotted into my UPro2, played using Kodi, Out to AV Receiver then to TV :
--see below #3, same result
3. USB drive slotted into my UPro2, played using Kodi, Direct HDMI Output to TV :
ONLY ONE plays, that is the " xxxxx.2017.BluRay.2160p.x265.10bit.HDR.4Audio.mUHD" , the other two simply gave me blue screen and screen returned back to 'Home' . I extracted the media details fyi :

you had said:
what is strange is that means box player/kodi->yamaha is ok with 4k, 10 bit, dts.
the other ones are with HD audio, player/kodi should be able to passthru the core dd or dts to soundbar.
having said that, i also know many boxes firmware are not optimized for kodi playback, trouble with 4k and higher audio.
so, that might just be the issue - firmware incompatibility.
try:
.. connect box direct to TV, w/o soundbar.
.. install mx pro, vlc, try again... with and w/o soundbar.
the answer should be clear after these tests.
Yes, i tried MX (not Pro i think) , and installed VLC : It is the same result. It will just hung, or return screen back to home, or freeze the UPro2... Same result whether if I output the AV to TV directly, or via the Yamaha Receiver. As mentioned, only 1 MKV played ok (see above). And even that i noticed it has some buffering work during the play time. Btw. This UPRO2 has got only a 10/100Mb LAN port..
Can't believe that the Sony Smart TV (not even android tv) plays them well, whereas a few hundred bucks Android box failed to play them ??
