that is interesting.

if "plain smart tv" gets dumped by netflix in just 3-4 years (just guessing), that's worse than androidtv.

my older one is 3 yrs old now, android6, can easily last another 3-4 as far as netflix/youtube are concerned, i would think.
*
Yep.. Yours should be okay cuz it's running the Android TV OS and sind ethst was originally built with such apps in mind and for the big screen. Mine's a 2014 model running Samsung's older SmartHub OS. Both Netflix and YouTube apps still get updated, even recently. But still not capable of the interactive playback feature. I expect the newer Tizen OS should pose no such issue. I'm still holding out to see if OLED bugs can be worked out and it gets cheaper or some close enough performance TVs such as current LG or Samsung's QLED series. As you are aware, I've been following a few threads about Android TV OS powered TVs and have seen the issues that tend to crop up. No biggie, cuz will surely have an external media player hooked up too. I bought back then, just before better TVs became cheaper. Don't intend to make the same mistake again. laugh.gif

Based on your description, it does appear to be a device compatibility issue. Hardware and or software is incapable of decompressing and playing such files. But yeah, you can try playing directly from a USB drive, just to rule out any networking bottleneck issues. As for playing it directly on the TV via its usb port, I strongly suspect that won't work. There are only a few TVs with inbuilt player and processing powers, powerful enough to handle 10-bit x.265 files. TV manufacturers tend to focus more on picture quality rather than native playback of high compression files.

If it was an AVR issue, at least video will play, but no sound or its downgraded to the next lower level HD Audio format. Your AVR inability to not output sound will not crash Kodi.

I have tried 3 files today (all MKVs):

xxxxx.2017.BluRay.2160p.x265.10bit.HDR.4Audio.mUHD
xxxxx.2017.UHD.BluRay.2160p.x265-10bit.TrueHD.7.1.3Audios
xxxxx.2018.UHD.BluRay.2160p.x265-10bit.DTS-HD.MA7.1

1. USB drive slotted into my Sony Smart TV's USB Port :
To my surprise, it is able to play all these 3 files, with ability to switch all channels (ie. AAC or TuneHD) to different language ! No lags nothing..

2. USB drive slotted into my UPro2, played using Kodi, Out to AV Receiver then to TV :
--see below #3, same result

3. USB drive slotted into my UPro2, played using Kodi, Direct HDMI Output to TV :
ONLY ONE plays, that is the " xxxxx.2017.BluRay.2160p.x265.10bit.HDR.4Audio.mUHD" , the other two simply gave me blue screen and screen returned back to 'Home' . I extracted the media details fyi :

you had said:
what is strange is that means box player/kodi->yamaha is ok with 4k, 10 bit, dts.

the other ones are with HD audio, player/kodi should be able to passthru the core dd or dts to soundbar.

having said that, i also know many boxes firmware are not optimized for kodi playback, trouble with 4k and higher audio.

so, that might just be the issue - firmware incompatibility.

try:

.. connect box direct to TV, w/o soundbar.

.. install mx pro, vlc, try again... with and w/o soundbar.

the answer should be clear after these tests.

Yes, i tried MX (not Pro i think) , and installed VLC : It is the same result. It will just hung, or return screen back to home, or freeze the UPro2... Same result whether if I output the AV to TV directly, or via the Yamaha Receiver. As mentioned, only 1 MKV played ok (see above). And even that i noticed it has some buffering work during the play time. Btw. This UPRO2 has got only a 10/100Mb LAN port..

Can't believe that the Sony Smart TV (not even android tv) plays them well, whereas a few hundred bucks Android box failed to play them ?? bangwall.gif

my conclusion is yr box lacks a good firmware to handle diff types of files.

there r boxes, incl mine that have superior firmware that plays all formats giving the right audio, video, frame rate, resolution.

yr tv likely has a decent native player, able to handle them.

yr experience here is a good one, a testimony to "not all boxes are built the same".

next box purchase, u know what to do! biggrin.gif

AVFAN, do you by any chance knows where to look for a latest firmware for a 6 yo Himedia HD600A ? biggrin.gif I have been using it.. till now .. But since I have got a 4K TV now i would like to explore the 4K source instead of those 1080p .. So, any recommendation, either find a firmware for HD600A - i think chances could be slim, OR a good HD600 replacement ? biggrin.gif

Cheers.. Thanks for all the info.

btw. Does the Kodi in the box requires manual upgrade? Or does it do it themselves (with a prompt or something wihen you turn on Kodi) ?

Tks.

AVFAN has pretty much said it all regarding the file playback issues.. From prelim check, the box struggled with the files being x265 & having bit-rates of over 11Mbps. That may or not be the culprit. but ultimately, since you now have a decent TV (especially if it does proper HDR10 as well), then you should get a more powerful media player. Decent ones that can handle those files easy are available.. Just drop by the relevant Android Box/HTPC threads section for further discussion. Annnddd NO!, the Himedia HD600A should be scrapped. biggrin.gif

Kodi if available and installed from the Play Store will auto-update when a compatible stable update is released. Else, you'd have to manually update it. Latest stable version remains v17.6 "Krypton".. Though if you want, you can install the v18 "Leia" RC 4... These is the latest RC (Release Candidate) version and is one of the pre-final releases of Kodi, what will eventually lead to the final version 18 later. it may or may not work on your device. So make sure to backup current as is, before installing the RC version.

Need some help here guys, just got back my internet and plugged back my Hypptv box. After launching Kodi, i can't seem to get any of the addons to be working. Are most of the addons dead? The only stream I was able to get was old Korean movies, other than that NOTHING seems to load (anime,tv series, movies, sports etc). What should I do?

Im using Kodi version 16.1 and cannot use the latest version as it requires Android version 5.0 and above.

Could be most of the addons or links within them are dead. This happens and no choice, have to replace. It would help if you mentioned what addons were giving problems and others can confirm if still working or dead. Alternatively, you can search this thread with each addon name as keyword.. See if we've posted about it.

Tried as i could.. Couldn't get either Quasar or Elementum to run on my Android powered device.. So sad.. Have to rollback to 17.6 till Elementum gets an update that allows it to work. Quasar's dev has been silent for the better part of a year now and i don't expect an update from him. Just glad he pushed a stable addon before stopping.
