To all bros,

Im a newbie here. Just got my P990i Set Two Weeks ago. Upgraded from a P910i and P900i. So I can give some comparisions here.
I got myself a Singapore Generic set because the price of the Ori Set from S.E was way too expensive. Previous two sets were ori sets but this time, the price difference of about RM750 was too much already.

I upgraded to the latest firmware from the Official Online S.E Update Centre. No probs for me. Flash the Updated the software to CXC 162037 R9EA001. So far so good. Lesser restarts and probs. The phone runs much faster already. U must always try to free up memory by using the task manager and close applications that you are not using. I also free up some internal memory by deleting the demos in the phone.
One of the downsides of the phone is that the internal memory seems to be smaller than of the P910i. Could someone explain the reason for this? Also the sound quality from the P990i is somehow poorer than the P910 though it has polyphonic capabilities.
One the bright side, the the bright side is that the Camera is much better compared to the P910i. I also love the WIFI function. The battery comsuption is as usual, just like its predecessors....could only last a day.
The display is much better. At first didnt like the way the phone functions, but after some getting used to, it seems more efficient than the P910.
Overall, I think the phone is great. Definite a worthy phone to buy. Dont say Im biased though Im a P Series Die Hard Fan. I think the phone just needs some more time to develope.

One Question though to all Sifus here, Im Using Celcom 3G. The thing I noticed is Signal Strength on my phone seems weaker than other phones like the K700i. When they have 5 Bars of line, sometimes I will only have 4 bars. Does the P990i have weaker signal strength or does the phone have problem? Anybody faced this problem before? Im geting worried bout this.
Also my Area Information on Channel 50 dont seem to work anymore. It used to work before I flashed to the new firmware. Anyone could answer my these two questions.

Thank You.

I wouldnt suggest you guys going for the cheap P990is on the market namely the Rm1300 ones. To my knowledge, the cheaper ones on sale on the market right now are Europe Pack Models meant for the Europe Market and the firmware are somehow different from the phones meant for Asia. Ie...cannot read chinese characters etc. Experiences by some owners here have shown that you would not be able to flash the firmware to use the firmware meant for Asia. Even the phone dealers/repairers fail to do this. There are also some cases where they cant even use the Online update service due to different location.
The other reason they are so cheap is also due to the phones are meant to be package phones for some large Service Providers like Vodaphone. This means that the phone is sold cheaper but you have to subsribe to their services for a period of time. The Service providers somehow will manage to lock some functions especially MMS and GPRS so that when you use a different service provider, it would not work.
So guys, beware of what kind of phone you are getting. I got an AP set quite some time ago, but my friend(Dealer) advised me and he got me an ASIA Pack phone. Im very happy with the phone and found no problem using all the phone functions. Correct me if Im wrong.

Guys,

One more thing.....I dont know if you guys noticed or not? But the Network reception of the P990 seems weaker if you compare with other phones. This is especially if you are Using 3G NETWORKS.
I noticed when I compare with my dad's Nokia N73, N73 registers 5/6 or 6/6 bars while my P990i only registers 3/5 Bars. Both are using Celcom 3G.
This has been happening since day 1 I got the phone. When I ask the guy from the shop, he told me that this is normal for all P990i users. Wanna know if you guys notice this ?
Is the reception poorer or is it more accurate compared to other phones or is it like this in order to increase battery life?
Anybody or sifus can clarify this?

Guys,

I tried updating my phone through SEUS. I tried running the update service but I keep getting the message 'There was an error setting up a local database, please try to restart the application".
Did any of you guys experience this before? Is this a problem with my own pc or is it a problem with SEUS?

KWWS, JCHEH,
I have just updated my phone to the latest Firmware R9F011. Currently the latest software. Just managed to fully set up the phone back to my own settings. Will let you all have a mini report once I tried it out.

I went to an SE Centre in Cheras and ask about the BST34. According to them, they only supply the BST33 only with all the original P990i sets. So is the BST 34 sold online here ori or not?

wads ur previous version? taiwan? im concerned at mine is taiwan version n i havent got the chance to try updating...thanks to SE's delay in releasing SEUS for vista
*
Mine is Singapore Generic. I have been updating my phone through SEUS all the time. Why dont u borrow a friend's pc and update your firmware there.
Btw, after talking to the SE Service centre ppl. I doubt they will release the all new firmware as they say that the P1 is already in our shores already. They have already stop producing the P990i already and are concentrating on the P1. That explains the sudden drop in prices for the P990i. From the specs I see that the platform is sort of the same except for larger internal memory, 3.2 megapixel camera and some minor features but they told me is a totally new phone. So I guess the all new firmware is for the new P1. So guys, dont be to hopeful.... hmm.gif

The R9F011 is the latest firmware so far from SEUS. I have tried it for two days. The mini and simple report I have so far compared to my previous version of R9A001....

1)Better battery life (around 10 to 15%)
2)Louder and better ring tones... but I still feel that my old P910i sound better. The sounds were horrible when I first got the phone.
3)Loading Bar after turning it on - looks cool and u will know the progress
4)Transition Function built-in (Dont see what difference It makes)
5)Fixed Music Button shortcut bug.
6)Supports WMV files

But for your guys looking for an improvement in Memory management, I dont see any differences at all unlike when I upgrade from R7F to R9F. doh.gif

Overall, the only noticeble improvement is better battery life and louder ring tones to justify the upgrade.

What the guy at SE Service centre was implying in saying that they already have the P1 on our shores already means that they are not doing anything to develope the P990i already. I think that is what he was trying to tell me when I asked him bout the R6.

Btw....normally once u guys restart your phone....how much free phone memory is displayed in the Status bar? I need to know this to compare with the current Firmware Im having now. But remember u need to look at the phone status once after u restarted the phone without opening any programs.

tats great...but thrs still alot to be improved...especially implementation of the today shortcuts on the idle screen...
too bad thrs no more release for my firmware version rclxub.gif
name after u updated do give us some feedbacks yea...
*
But how come when I try updating through SEUS they give me a reply that my software is already up to date? rclxub.gif
I thought they have released the latest R9G007 firmware....
The website says "When discussing your P990i's firmware, always refer to the CDA number and organizer version - the latter is higher in the list, rather than the phone version".
So I guess they dont have any later software for my Singapore chinese/english Set yet. The website says that my current organizer version is up to date.

Yeah...But come to think of it....the RG6 is still not available for our ASIA sets yet.....what are they thinking? Do they think that we are a smaller majority here for P990i users?
Man...Im still waiting and waiting....day by by day ...and its still not happening yet mad.gif Hope that they wont stop here and not make the RG6 for our phones or I really will boycott S.E

Since P990i has the Megabass feature, i find it on the same level as Walkman phones. biggrin.gif

The K800i and other non-Walkman SE phones released after the K750i have no more Megabass.
*
Im using two phones. One is the W810i and P990i. I did compare the sound quality of the two phones and the conclusion is that the W810i sounds better coz its a walkman phone. But I still think that my old P910i sounds the best of all S.E Phones.

Well they both sound the same to me. tongue.gif Can't really tell the difference.

There is also no difference between W800i and K750i to my ears.

Don't be fooled just because it is walkman branded. laugh.gif
*
If you are using the older firmwares, the sound is terrible for the P990i. Now with the later firmware at least.... R9F011, it is sounding much better and louder. Previously if you put the speaker on high, the sound will sound like "pecah". But now with the current software its ok. But overall, in terms of sound clarity and bass, the W810i is still a class above the P990i. Not because of of its Walkman Brand. biggrin.gif
The sound quality of the K750i amd W800i Im not too sure of because I have never used the phones before. But I know that the K750i doesnt support Polyphonic Ring tones.

yup not much difference..but compare either a W800 and a K750 with a W810 then u'll hear the difference...

the walkman is not a gimmick..if you follow the updates of SE you know they made a mistake and the later firmware made the megabass of all K series worse than the W series..
well bro, sad to say K750 does support polyphonic...polyphonic are just midi files...ringtones like Sony Ericsson and Greeting are all midi so how can K750 not support midi..was an owner of a K750, W800, W810 and now a P990
*
Well...no point arguing....If u go to http://www.sonyericsson.com and compare the three phones K750i, W800i and W810i you would know what Im saying. The K750i doesnt support polyphonic ring tones as well as the megabass feature. Just trying to get the facts right because I did research the site when I was deciding between getting the much cheaper K750i or the W810i. Didnt understand why the W810i is more expensive then and what advantages it had over the K750i except being new and better looking. Now I know. nod.gif

Hmm... so far not much ppl using R9G007 version..(ATM only four regions available) look like still can't predict advantages/disadvantages over R9F001 (some review said good, some said worst than R9F001 & look for downgrade back to R9F001?  shocking.gif )

Especially CDA 162007/8... as different region,  might built with different version of Organizer/Bluetooth as well as CDA.

Quite exciting to see how the true CDA 162007/8's R9G007 perform..  hmm.gif
*
Thats why Im still waiting for them to produce the R9G007 for my Singapore Chinese/English set. Thats what I heard, some ppl are saying the R9G007 performs worst than R9F001. They say that Blackberry and some other functions are not even working with R9G. Thats why Im also curious to know whether to upgrade or not when the R9G is available for my set. But one thing for sure is that R9G is sure faster in closing and opening applications.
But still, I do want to upgrade to R9G. Wonder whats taking them in making R9G for our sets..... hmm.gif

SEUS already has the R9G For Hong Kong Region P990i. So Owners, go upgrade your phones.
Wonder when is the Singapore Region R9G Coming Out......... whistling.gif ..still waiting.

Btw, guys....those who have uprgaded to R9G, Can you guys tell us if its worth the upgrade. I've look at other forums and seems that a lot of users of the R9G is looking at downgrading back to the older firmware of R9F because of bugs....anybody can update us on this.....
