Hi,

Was thinking of changing the hard disk of the old xbox (XBMC is sweet) and I tried to backup the system first as instructed in some guide. Under System-->backup I run the function and the caption 'backingup smile.gif' is shown but I think the xbox hang on this moment (as the swirling logo at the back is not swirling anymore)

I left it for half an hour thinking it might take some time to backup and it still is not reponding. Later I press the eject button and the xbox is reset back to the evox dashboard. in c:/backup folder I see there is a file bios.bin with 0 as the size. Normally how long does it take to backup (those 5 files will be placed in backup folder) ? Did I do something wrong ?

BTW I am using evox dashboard V 1.8.2812 (as written in the dashboard) and Xecuter 2 modchip I think (written at the bottom of the X logo when booting up)

After this is just a matter of copying those needed files in C:\ of xbox + the backup folder to a cd or dvd media (xiso) to boot the new harddisk and start with formatting ?

I am also thinking of replacing the IDE cables with ATA 100 - does this make any significant difference in performance ( read somewhere the dvd drive will load faster ) ?

Thanks in advance

technically speaking, form what u mentioned, most prolly the ide cable u got is ata 33,u can try either ata 100 or ata 133...its trial n error to see whether ur xbox support those ide cable or not as i never change mine...

for backing up purposes, judge-the method is one way...
but, what u wanna backup from ur xbox hdd?
gamesaves or the dashboard?
modchip bios no need to backup..

what u can do, google for auto installer deluxe...
download it, read the manuals...
so, no need backup old hdd...
then only u get the picture why i'm saying this...

The backup mainly for backing up the modchip bios and hdd key smile.gif

If you wanna backup your entire hdd (dashboard, save games, etc) best to connect to computer and FTP the whole C and E drive out.

Basically I am trying to backup the files needed to lock/unlock the new Harddisk (initiate)? (as some of those keys are in there) ? (I am following a guide from xbox-scene.) I know that the save files and apps are currently in my E: and C: hold all the bios + dashboard info which I plan to just copy over to the new drive. E: on the other hand is not my main concern as the save files are from the previous owner.

On another note, anyone here using other ways other than FTP to transfer files between the Xbox and PC (samba/ network neighborhood over it)? FTP was kinda slow when dealing with large files numbers (banyak files). I transfered XBMC (around 2000++ files - I know I can dump some of the language and script files but was eager to try it out fast) files took over 6 hours sad.gif

Then something wrong with your FTP prog / network link cause I definitely don't take 6 hrs to transfer files sweat.gif

Just transfer the backup dir (with the hddkey files) if you mainly just wanna lock the new hdd and follow the tutorial from xbox scene .

yo guys, thinking of getting a 2nd hand unmodded xbox
how much it will cost me to mod it now? Most of the shops I ask don't mod xbox anymore sad.gif
Softmod will be tricky, so I'm thinking of modding it with a modchip with on/off feature wink.gif

Thanks for the info - I am currently downloading Slayers 2.7 (for the initial backup and installation) and Auto installer 3.1 (for its collections of apps). I know Auto Installer can 'kau thim' all but looking at the readme slayers seem easier to install I think. Will have an update once I get both files ready. The international network outage is making downloading even worse than 56K.

I think is better to get a second hand modded xbox currently. Most of it are for sale for less than RM500 (some are modded with on/off and extra USB port too - in garage sale). Why would you want to have a on/off feature ? - want to go to xbox live ? Good luck on finding a stock unmodded xbox here. You are lucky if you can find a modded xbox for sale in shops.

There are some articles and howto on xbox-scene. You will need to do some welding on the xbox motherboard to get the extra USB port.
