Hm... dat files are usually in VCDs, and it is usually mpeg format.
You said can play it right?
I reccommend you play it with Media Player Classic, and check its properties. There, you can find some info on the files. I think if it contain video, it will show the format, and also, the sound codec as well.
MPC can be installed with K-Lite Codec pack.
