My All time favorite RPG list goes like this (not in any particular order, whatever i can reminisce):
(1) yes. I like WILD ARMS 1 & 2 ( 2) XENOGEARS
(3) FF VI (yes, only vi for some reasons) (4) Breath of Fire series (I ~ IV)
(5) Pandora Box's ONI series (SNES one)
(6) Tales series (TOPx, TOD, TOD2, TOE, TOR, TOH/R, TOTA; lesser for TOL & TOI)
(7) Star Oceans 1 ~ 3 (8) Shadow Hearts 2
(9) Valkyrie Profiles (10) Saga Frontier
(11) Lufia 2 (12)Seiken Densetsu (secret of mana) 2 & 3
(13) Legend of Dragoon (14) Arc the Lad 1 & 2
(15) Bahamut Lagoon (16) Live a Live
(17) Chrono Trigger (18) Legend of Heroes (VI~VII)
(19) Ys (20) Castlevania SOTN
(21) Alundra (22) Dark Cloud 2
(23) Brave Fencer Musashi

There are more like shining series, legend of legaia etc.. they were decent, some good but somehow I found myself unable to go back to play again after completing... i don't know if I could count Vanillaware's games like Dragon Crown, Muramasa, Odin Sphere as those may have RPG element but I treat them as my favorite action games more so...
Out of all my favorites, I'm dying to see the remake of Xenogears (feel rushed & unfinished, don't care about xenosagas), FFVI, Lufia 2 (hate the DS one), secret of mana 3 and Live a Live!!! And definitely the revival of ONI series! wishful thining i guess...

Hmm. Very similar list. I replayed Xenogear 3 times. Damn ending was sitting in a chair looking at those texts! The OST by Yasunori Mitsuda was beautiful.

Top 3 fav - Xenogears, FF A Realm Reborn. Odin Sphere. Nostalgic PS2-3 great titles that will always be great in memory.
Yes, indeed, Xenogears music is so nostalgic, it's so powerful that whenever I heard it, I can recall the scenes in game, well, vaguely but that's just how brilliant the music and the story goes for Xenogears!
And Wild arms 1 comes in second!

The only thing to dis for Xenogears was its Disc 2... and it stops at episode V sad.gif ...

Got xenosaga ma.....

Dude, although it's called spiritual successor by the same team, it ain't no xenogear, that's why spiritual and with only few homage to it but are no relevance to the SE's IP at all... The creators tried too hard but I don't blame them, it's all Square's fault rolleyes.gif and I don't actually play the xsaga series, watchin' my dorm mates in college played them and I found it's just meh...

QUOTE(panda-man @ Jun 9 2016, 04:54 PM)
wild arms one opening music. with the whistling. ah.... still whistle that even though havent played the game in damn damn long.

never realised the game is 20 years old...
*
Haha, that one, yes! But boomerang & zed's themes are the ones that haunted me most, LOL

The xenosaga series is "supposedly" prior episodes before the events in Xenogears.

Although they didn't specify the period, but it is well speculated it took place many many many years before.

Imagine prometheus, and then Alien.

The gameplay of course is a vast departure to what Xenogear offers.
*
Yes & No! No relevance at all as far as I understand, just a few homages like Abel etc... there is a detailed analysis and anatomy on plots of Xenogear-Xenosaga series out in somewhere, based on collections of interviews from creators and various team members involvement in the development... they were trying to continue the xenogear but since the IP is held by SE, and after they left the company, they couldn't bring it over to Namco, instead they created the Xenosaga which loosely based on earlier works written for Xenogears... So in a sense to you it's Xenogear universe, but in essense, it's not a xenogear, it's xenosage on its own. So no connection at all, still feeling left out from Xenogears, although some backstories were already told in a rushed way during the long narration of disc 2 ...

cool! how long is the game?
*
Well, honestly... decent length, about 20+ hours... plus i grind alot since it got crazy hard at some point and i stopped after feelin' tedious to complete the materials gathering...

it is a decent game, pro side, it can b really fun, challenging for some boss fights (especially after clear game...) or even some strong monsters in late game that punish hard for doing something wrong...

Con side, if anything to dis, I would say it doesn't have world map as I have problem rememberin' the game world geograhy (this is personal problem though),
and then, get tedious to collect materials (need them to complete skills) as each monster has different other drops aside from normal and rare drops where u must meet certain conditions to make them drop (can't it b more annoyin like trying to look for rare monsters and 90% of the time they flee before u can act or set up the condition, WTF!!! mad.gif )
On the other hand, while it's challenging, it can be broken with certain combination skills, of course, providing you have the time to complete material gathering, but then i didn't utilize fully some stat enhancing effect from food, may b that's why i struggled end game blush.gif ...

What the hell... they are trying to reboot some classic JRPG project but on Smart phone platform, well more like Fan service project... The most recent being Star Ocean Anamnesis (and I can't download it/even droid emu can't play it either), O'wait, SO5 just came out, so this may not count...
Wild Arms and Arc the Lad were on the list...
anyway, still no news for remake of some awesome classic titles... booo

You guys were right... the game developers emphasize on graphics so much that majority of the time spent developing were just making the game look good these days... and then they don't have time for contents...

I found Falcom is another company that fell to this bullcrap game developer symptom now... and learned to do worse, they don't bother give much update, then port to other platform with added content... e.g. Tokyo Xanadu & YS8 (enhanced version on PS4! vita owners got the cheesy version) and Sen no kiseki 3 (leave vita only players a cliffhanger)...

if newcomers rpg said that FFXV's brotherhood was awesome gilerr, they totally never played Legend of Dragoon. That part where the hero, the knight and the king did a 3some brofist before the knight departed to afterlife was very memoriable. Almost cried when the king said to the knight "no, you're not dead"
*
the only thing I found awe with FFXV was the summoning... anything else just meh... or make me puke or dozing off...

SE could have done away with FFXV by remaking LOD, or forgetten FF like VI if they bother with graphics... cos contents of the old titles are more abundant and are already there... anyway, they can choose what game to develop just like we can choose what game to buy after review...

guess i was too bored, I went to buy Saga new title Scarlet Grace... damn... I could only say I missed Frontier series or romancing series, I will always remember old glories of the JRPG past cry.gif ...

Legend of Dragoon was under Sony company, not Square.

Square just need to get back Hinorobu Sakaguchi from Mystwalker coz FF series went downfall after Hinorobu left Square. If Kojima is mastermind storytelling for MGS, then Hinorobu is for FF. Without Kojima, MGS is just a name or brand for ridiculous game. Without Shinji Mikami, Resident Evil is just a soulless boring game that just borring its title. Same as Final Fantasy also.

The only RPG games that I think worth playing due to it still retain its classic gameplay and story telling eventhough it expand to many series was Tales of series. All praise Hideo Baba.
*
Ooops, I messed up the developer for LOD, lol blink.gif

Well, the game creators could have done what Iga did, go on kickstarter, forget their glorious past and might as well start a brand new one rolleyes.gif better answer to fans than corp management ...

I stop paying attention to Tales series since tales of heart R... cos BanCo has forsaken the market of handheld, as I am one of those solely carry handheld gaming system blush.gif

They have time for contents when it earn them money, DLC DLC DLC give you half baked story then later tell you buy this DLC DLC and you get the full story.

Instead of give you full story then expansion which you need to buy for extra or continuation of the ending  whistling.gif
Games that i enjoy during PS2

Hahaha, exactly... just a boiled down of smart phone in-app purchase which a $$$ model they learned from how people would pay a little but would add up and spend more than a retail game if unchecked...

This new upcoming RPG looks good. Got the old school RPG feel, and the character design isn't bad. Feels a bit like... Valkyrie profile. (<< dang i just remembered this good RPG)

Anyone keen to host a thread for this?  blush.gif

Oh crap, I haven't even finished this game!!! I left it after a new classes update and went for Exist archive which then I also left it unfinished and moved onto other new games... I don't know why I just couldn't finish rpg these days... felt like they're kinda lackluster for me to keep playing...

and I can't believe mega_shok.gif I already set my eyes on aoki kakumei no valkyria (Valkyria azure revolution?) and yoru no nai kuni 2 (nights of azure 2?)... really like what u said, not much choices and you just have to stick with shit games or pull out altogether... glad Sen no kiseki 3 not released on vita, don't need to go thru the crap with Falcom anymore... may b the Ys origin would b the last title i would get...

Suikoden series, Legend of Dragoon, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Tales of Destiny 2 was the best RPG I've ever played. Most of it I've re-played many times. Lately the newer Tales series wasn't as good as the old ones...the story just....no sense of urgency. Still remember you have to naik to the second world through a light of pillar in Tales of Destiny 2.

Suikoden was also very unique. 108 characters, war game and decision making simply make it the best RPG. I feel it's the same for now too but sadly it was forgotten cry.gif

FF13-1 was playable, 2 and 3...puuiiiii. Haven't tried FF15 but I feel over-rated.

Tales of Xillia 1 is good, I like the combo fighting system. Second one mehhh, reused a lot of map and dungeons. Tales of Zestiria new concept of fusion but story is so so. Upcoming Tales of Bestiria...I put low expectation.

Another RPG that continues til now is Persona series but I am not a big fan of Persona hmm.gif Not a big fan of Kingdom Hearts series too. Felt weird to play RPG along side with Disney characters  sweat.gif

But I think turn based RPG is dying....current trend is shifting towards action based RPG. The last turn based RPG I know that's good is Persona and I am Setsuna.
*
I believed the TOD2 u talked about was actually Tales of Eternia (Rid as the protagonist)? cos TOD2 as I remember was the story about Stan's son Kyle fighting against a "fake god" and that crazy Balbatos, it also spots the harder battle system (the most game overs in all tales series i played) than Tales of Eternia, although both were very very awesome games...

Suikodens were good except that one on DS, ppffff, sad title... Breath of Fire series (1 ~4) were great too!

Never play any title of persona, perhaps i just don't like the art style and battle system (same reason for dragon quests...)

There are still some turn based RPG, at least on vita... but only slated for jpn release.... Setsuna was fun, but may b it's a side project, so can't complain much about its length...

I don't mind action rpg, but it just needs to have contents...

Yea that was Rid. I didn't know it was called Tales of Eternia cause the game CD was written TOD2 laugh.gif

Breath of Fire IV was the best. The story of 2 dragons! And the battle system combo awesome man.

Nowadays most turn based RPG is on Vita or other handheld consoles cry.gif
*
TOE was localized as TOD2 in the States when actual TOD2 was not even in development and to avoid confusion IIRC...
I think both titles were amended after ported to PSP... The best tales game, IMO which I actually never have a chance to play is the Tales of Destiny R DC, it's not ported and it's only released in JP, my PS2 was not modded, so I couldn't play imported title cry.gif ...

Speak of dragon... Bahamut Lagoon was nice too! but somehow it never get any subsequent release... many great SFC titles somehow just fell out of favor, like Lufia (don't confuse with Lunar)...

Now I recall another great series Golden Sun, too bad it's published by Nintendo, won't see it cross platform, or i doubt there will be more title of this series...

haha, it doesn't have new game+, so that's no reason to replay other than exploring end games and collecting rare items (and this game actually have lots of RNG exploits...)

Last time during PS1 vs Sega Saturn console era, my friend who own Sega Saturn keep saying Shinning Force series > FF7-FF9. Who played that game back then during that era? Is it really good as claimed by my friend?
*
Honestly, I only started playing from Soul and Tears etc series... I just know it has a cult follow in Jpn for Force series, since there ain't many rpg genre on Sega consoles, iirc (shining force gone way back, even on mega drive, just so you know)... just like Fire emblem on Nintendo's... I didn't play it but it's kinda like Fire emblem with lots of branch in story plot as I read from game magazine back then, IIRC...

I only focus on handheld now, since I have Vita only with me...

currently playing Saga Scarlet Grace

Waiting for Valkyria Azure Revolution and the Yoru no nai Kuni 2

Supposedly expecting Sen no Kiseki 3 but felt "betrayed" by Falcom after they announce PS4 exclusive only, and also got cheated on Tokyo Xanadu & YS VIII, I decided to drop Falcom out of my favor, not looking forward to any from them except the YS Origin, ported from PC...

Last one would be the Bloodstained Ritual of the Night... postponed again yawn.gif

*
They only have Japan release date now, may b that's why you don't hear of it yet. You can check out Famitsu or Dengeki PS, if you can read a little of japanese to know what games are in store for future release... Oh, the Saga scarlet grace was a revival of saga series... but wasn't as good as Romancing & Frontier, the best I like was Saga Frontier... i think SE has plans for some side projects of older titles, but somehow they just couldn't get them right... This Saga, then the Legend of Mana, and the setsuna, seem disappointed to them that they don't follow up much after release...

Haha, BTW I won't have the chance to lay my hands on those titles you mentioned sad.gif

SO5 looks boring to me, indeed... I rather replay SO1, 2 & 3 (I don't have the system to play 5th anyway, LOL)...

I stop paying attention to new Tales games after all I just don't have the system to play them, and Banco doesn't plan for any tales release on handheld after TOHR flopped rolleyes.gif
