Hello !
I'm currently playing Classical and would looooove to play Electric too.
I'm getting my first Electric Guitar soon for my birthday and I need your help, so I won't be regretting until I have the money to buy another guitar.
Some guitars are based on some music
and I want to play mostly Indie Music.
(eg : Death Cab for Cutie , Eisley , Rilo Kiley , Tegan & Sara...)

HELP ME OUT FINDING THE RIGHT GUITAR PLEASE ?
sad.gif

(I couldn't find any similar thread thus I'm opening a new one, hope that's ok.)

Oh and Happy New Year everyone !

Indie rock? Go for either a Yamaha Pacifica or a Epiphone Les Paul Special if you're on a budget..... a Fender Strat or a Gibson Les Paul special if you have a bigger budget.

And don't forget a decent amp. The Vox AD30VT would be a good choice amp.

any low-mid range ibanez/cort/sx/pacifica + roland microcube should fit the bill...

Wouldn't recommend Ibanez for indie rock..... to trebly..

go for either an SX strat or Pacifica strat... And your choice of either the microcube or the VoxDA15... I would personally go for the Vox..... as it's more inclined towards the Indie rock sound you're going for.

Pacifica is Yamaha right ? I heard Yamaha deals with a lot of money .

And I've always wanted a pink guitar (being a girl ; duh?)
the body can be custom paint right ? Usually how much it cost ?

Seriously, I'm sooo a newbie in these.

Body CAN be repainted, but it's usually very expensive and sometimes not to the standard you want. Pick a guitar and just put stickers on it tongue.gif
OR.... you could go ultra cute and buy the pink Hello Kitty fender/Squire strat!

But yes.... it's the Yamaha Pacifica we're talking about. Have very good reviews here and outside as well for a "budget" guitar. Sorry. I don't think they have it in pink though......

Yeah..... it's not very versatile, costs RM1200(!!!) before discount and probably won't fit your style..... but it's pink!

BTW..... I'll probably be getting the black Hello Kitty guitar..... it just looks so AWSOME!!!

This is what (i think) BlackTrix is taking about:

Squier Hello Kitty(R) Stratocaster

But try to get a good solid low-end guitar like what everyone has posted, SX or Pacifica. They are good guitars for newbies, well .... good enough till like you want something more "expensive"after a few years playing, then that's for next time.

well, it's typical strat copy with bridge humbucker pickup only. (not even got coil-split...)

this kitty guitar itself is not versatile at all...

i would recommend a HSH/SSH config with coil-split function guitar.

Man, where you get the idea that Ibanez is too trebly? (and aren't indie rock trebly anyway?).

The SX Strat and the pacifica should be the trebly one since it is based on the classic strat design.

Ok... I take back my trebly comments......
Right now, I'm saying that Ibanez is probably too METAL for indie rock.....
Don't get me wrong.... any guitar can probably play any music....... but for that budget and music frameset in mind, I'd recommend a strat or a les paul special for that type of music.....

They are more Ibanez models than the RG. The SA, Artcores, SZ, all these are good takes of classic strats , Hollowbodies, and LP designs.

For bang for buck, it is really hard to beat Ibanez here. I think Asura got his SA for less than RM1k.

Mahogany body, H-H (there is a S-S-H version also), not easy to find quality guitars with such features at less than RM1k these days.

Don't go Bentley!!! They'll hantam you with the prices!!! Besides, they sell only Ibanez, Fender and Jackson guitars there....
Try a Yamaha show room like the one in 1 Utama for the Pacifica.

Let's clear a few things here, you all might hate bentley or whatever for whatever reasons but for the stuff they are carrying, Bentley has the best prices PERIOD.

The only thing that are almost list price are the high end Ibanez, Fenders, and Marshalls and that is for obvious reasons.

The rest of their stuff, the low end to mid end are cheaper that what you can get in the States. most of the time.

The only place that hantam prices are Guitar Collection, Rhapsody, and to a certain degree Chambers (a bit higher that Bentley for some stuff, strings especially).

And if you want a Yamaha, there is a Yamaha in KL Plaza just across Bentley, don't need to go all the way to 1 Utama.

The stock in the Yamaha 1 Utama is pitiful at best. They seem to be carrying more generic china brands than actual Yamaha stuff.

But like I said, You can't find the Yamaha and more "budget" oriented guitars from there.....

I just thought of 1 Utama because that was the last place I visited today......

Well, what is budget to you? Last I saw in Bentley, they have lots of Squire, Cort, Ibanez Gio all for under 900. A new guitar under rm900 is in the budget category di for me. There is also Santa Cruz crap for bottom of the barrel stuff.

Though Woh Fatt is probably the king for low end stuff.

But credit where credit is due, Bents still give good deals on CERTAIN items. Heck, even my RR3 costs less here then in Guitar Center!

Indie sound???? Telecaster all the waay!! Tele's are made for indie!! I'd recommend Squire Tele (Standard) the 900 bux ones! Bentley would have the best range i suppose. Yamahas are just too pricey imho. Even though the pacificas are great.. errr.. it doesn't 'feel' quite indie... Ifyaknowatimeaaan Lolx~

Try em out, its lighter and you can swing it around like a machine gun! rRRrrAtatatatatata!!

Dude, I understand your love for Ibanez.... really I do. I'm such a loyal Gibson/Epiphone fan that it's borderline insanity.....

But when it comes to Indie rock, a Ibanez grg170dx would NOT be suitable. Yes. It's a great guitar for that price.... very good humbucker tone, average whammy bar and an average body. But for Indie rock, it's more about pure, raw tone then anything else. Maybe an Xtone Semi-hollow guitar would be great as well, but that would overshoot the budget already.

I DO agree with Snipe 'EX and gizmoduck that a telecaster would be a good choice as well. It's twangyness would be a good match with the Indie scene. A single coil strat in the same way would suit the sound also, but not as "heavy" as the Ibanez grg170dx... If you can find a good deal on a telecaster, even a Squire one (go to bents and see what's the best price they can offer you), that would be a great choice. Couple it with a decent 15watter (like CountPuchi says), the VOX AD15VT is a good choice or the VOX 15DA if the 15VT is over your budget and that would be awesome like a piece of deep fried gold.

A vox would probably be better suited for indie rock. If you're more inclined towards Modern Rock/Heavy metal, the cube would be a better choice because they claim the distortion is better.

Not too sure about the price.... but I think antonio could quote you a good deal on the Vox.... check with him

Sure I do....... because the Vox is a solid amp with great tones for great value..... at least here in Malaysia.
If I discovered this forum when I started guitar, I would have gotten a Vox as well. I don't even own a Vox amp, but their excellent ToneLab SE..... and judging from the quality of the sound, the vox valvetronix should be even better.....
BUT.... the only time I wouldn't recommend it, would be if the user is more inclined towards heavy metal and modern rock music.... For that case, a Marshall AVT series would be a better bet then the Vox.... Remember! This is for metalheads and hard rockers!!! Although Vox's distortion is excellent, the Marshall AVT still has much more punch and energy then the Vox could push out. Budget players however, should go with the Microcube series which has a tighter distortion at a better price.
I'm going to have to re-evaluate the MG15DFX to see if it meets up with the microcube or Vox standard......

Classic rock sounds or in this case, indie rock, can be achieved better with the Vox.....

Indie Rock hmm... you'd probably won't go wrong with a Squier Telecaster & the Vox AD30VT. The AC30 emulation on the Vox is great and coupled with a tele, it should give you a versatile sound. Throw in a Digitech Bad Monkey and voila... you're ready to rock. thumbup.gif

...... but I think that setup would already exceed the RM 1.2k budget, right? Don't forget to take out at least RM100 for cables, tuner, a decent strap and a change of strings.

I think most users will have forgotten all those. Ok, for the tuner, most digital FX amps would have a built in tuner, but the rest..... ESPECIALLY a change is strings is a must. Oh yeah, and a case if you're going to be carrying it around.

BTW, for the Vox, do visit CK Music in Jalan Imbi which is nearby bents actually....

For indie rock it is either a tele, strat, or a hollowbody though that is really generalization. I believe the indie attitude is "anything works" and if you can make an Explorer with EMGs works for you, who cares?

Though at around RM1200, I would suggest one of those Squiers Teles with P90 (drools!!!) or Ibanez Artcore Hollybodies for the old school and if you are more adventurous the Ibanez SA. The flametop on some of the models are just SICK!!!

Do stay away from those Gio with FR, it will only headache and frustration if you do not really need the bar.

Too many people buy into the whole FR thing because they thought it looks cool and then get all frustrated about it because of the maintainence.

Bottomline is, only get FR guitars (and a quality one to boot) if you have a serious absolute need for an FR and also the skills and patience to maintain one.

True dat... I mostly play my Les Pauls and only REALLY use the RR3 when I'm doing alot of runs (because of the wider frets) and ATTEMPTING to play dragonforce or C.O.B songs... everything else, I go back to my LPs.......

The Floyd Rose really IS a pain if you don't know how to use it properly. You can't change your tunings as easily and it's a nightmare to change strings. In fact, I'll probably take it to Guitar Collection to get the strings changed and re-setup. Like noisetrigger says, if you don't need it, don't get a guitar that has one..... besides..... I don't think Indie rock has any Whammy bar Pyrotechnics!!!

I think a tele will be just fine.... Will be going to bents on Saturday to check out the Digitech Whammy btw.......

mighty music had a clearout sale on the squier california series a few months back at RM380 each.
i tried out 2 strats and 1 tele there, 1 was pretty nicely done...the other 2 had flaws in the neck.

also the california series tele bridge is top loading like a strat, not string thru like how a tele should be.

But still a decent guitar at RM580. Couple that with a Vox AD15VT..... Deep fried gold......

the biggest competitor at RM580 is the SX ash strat, that thing is cool cos of its satin finish and natural ash body with neck binding.
i dont like the normal SX strats cos the finish is too thick and glossy.

But the twangyness of the Tele will have to win out instead of the strat for indie rock though...... plus...... The Karate Kid slung a Yellow Tele and used it to battle (and win!) Steve Vai!!!!!!!

yea, the tele ash is nice too.
but i dont like the les paul ash cos its a bolt-on, they shouldve gone all the way and made it a set neck.

Yeah, it should be better with a set neck. I wonder how it sounds like...
Anyway buying any SX guitar is a fine choice I think.

It's not about the EQ.... it's about the amp and the effects.....

For a beginner on a tight budget, even though still sounds a little digital, I would recommend the Zoom G2.1u pedal... mainly because it has quite a number of good amps, solid effects (especially the digital ones), expression pedal AND a USB interface for recording to the PC..... mostly because of the last one which is why I recommend the Zoom G2.1u pedal instead of the Korg Toneworks, where it has slightly better effects, but no recording feature.....

hmmm?
who said the Korg Toneworks has no recording feature?
just use the normal way which i believe is called a line-in tongue.gif

the few clips i've messed around on have been done on my Korg Toneworks.

Yeah, that too.... but don't have to worry if the soundcard is good enough, the ASIO configurations and stuff like that.....
with USB.... Install drivers, Install Software, Plug It In, you're good to go.

I record clips using my toneworks via the toneport (basically for a wah pedal) some of the amps and cabs in gearbox sounded better for my taste

Yeah, but a Toneworks + a Toneport would definately go over the RM400 price mark.

Bents don't sell Zoom products. Try Chambers in Sungai Wang or CK music (I Think).......
