other than the inconvenience of having to select sources on two remotes, not really - if you are running a standard definition DVD player.

Of course HDMI carries both audio and video...

from the topic title, I'm guessing piscesguy's current amp doesn't have HDMI, and he doesn't want to upgrade his amp yet. But he has a HDMI capable player AND display

QUOTE("kelvinyam")
If you output your DVD player audio signal to your amp and not your TV, what's the point of using HDMI?
The point of using HDMI is getting the video signal to the TV in digital form.

The only way to get DD/DTS to the receiver in this case is a coax/optical connection. If you just connect the HDMI to the TV, you will get stereo sound from your TV only, or stereo into your receiver (if you connect the TV audio output, you can use PLII, but it wont be the same as DD/DTS)

that'll be relevant when piscesguy upgrades his receiver AND gets a HD or BD player.

remember what happened with VHS and Beta - well i guess most of you were too young...

the war was decided by default when the pron industry went with VHS wink.gif

OK its different because the media is physically the same size and it'll be less difficult to have a combo - or universal player - which makes it moot who wins the war eventually.

someone's got a combo HTPC http://www.vidabox.com/

It will be like SACD and DVD-Audio, both formats surviving alongside each other

more like lying alongside each other in critical condition actually.

Yammy is a good buy generally. If you can afford it I see no reason to go with an older machine.

htkaki -

well, it's true tongue.gif having said that I am seeing a few more new sacd/dvd-a available, the Beatles LOVE, for example. 2 Talking Heads (DVD-A) reissues, Moody Blues (SACD) reissues

this in addition to the releases of SACD Classical

Well, if they're priced lower, they still have a chance to replace ordinary audio cds, I still prefer listening to SACDs or DVD Audios anytime despite the limited choices.

ditto. have you got the LOVE DVD-A yet?

I can't recommend which amp is better but definitely not Yammy, sound is good but quality wise is poor. For the time being, I'll just use my 2600 first, thought of changing to another amp but maybe later until there's one that supports the next gen audio formats or codecs.  Just a friendly advice, it might be a coincedence but I seriously doubt it.  doh.gif

OK I used a Yamaha before - not the new ones - but some older generation AVRs and it was fine for me - loved the sound, slam and weight (seems they work well with paradigms)

It is NOT a good time to invest in a receiver. even though I've been saying HDMI1.3 is almost irrelevant audio~wise and onboard TrueHD decoding may not be needed, you will feel severely put out if you invest in a AVR now only to find that in July the new batch of machines have HDMI 1.3 and onboard decoding. even if they aren't being fully utilized, you will still want it.
