Couldn't find any tread on Asus K401UB ultrabook. I bought one today from Asus dealer, upgraded the ram & also to check on the mb. To my surprise & lengthy discussion with the retailer, our local model of K401UB does not come with 24GB ssd. Unlike the same model that is sold in Taiwan & Singapore which comes with the 24GB ssd in addition to 1TB hdd, the Malaysian model is void of the ssd. The empty half size msata ssd is there for us to insert.

Picture of taiwan model:

Picture of local model & empty slot:

So buyers beware of the missing ssd. There will be a big difference in performance without the 24GB ssd cache.

Found this posting in chinese:

Plan to get 128GB half size msata ssd to test on this machine. If possible I prefer the Win OS to be on the ssd & leave the 1TB hdd for data files.

The laptop uses half size msata not the regular bigger size msata. The half size is max 128GB in the market. Don't see any bigger capacity ones yet.

Anyone upgraded their K401UB to ssd?

I thought can make recovery discs/pendrive and install to ssd but after checking with asus support, it seem that recovery can only be done on the same hardisk from the hidden partition. There is no ASUS recovery software

If hardisk fail under warranty, need to bring to asus center for reinstallation and OEM licence key. After warranty, be prepared to pay for new harddisk and new windows licence.

It doesn't work that way. Honestly, the way Asus trains their staff sometimes.. ranting.gif

In any case, the OEM license is stuck to the machine, not the hard disk. As long as you get the right OEM keys you should be able to reinstall windows if it comes to that.

Use windows 10 and create a recovery drive, that should help you if you need to reinstall windows.

Oh, and best way to upgrade to SSD is to mirror your hard drive first then install the SSD.

There is no Windows 10 OEM Sticker on Asus computers.

The ori harddisk has 5 partitions. The mirroring software that I have can only partition 3 (max).

There is no Windows 10 oem stickers on all computers. You would provably have to pull the key out via magic jelly bean or make a restore usb.

Aa for partition, what ssd are you changing to? The samsung i used before had no such issue with its partitioning software.

I have a transcend ssd370s and a sandisk ssdplus. I use the aomei backuppper for mirroring. No problem when using for windows 7 and before.

Try the software recommended by the respective manufacturers. Normally, those only work if it can detect the particular manufacturers but usually they are fully featured software.

Hey, I just bought a Asus k401ub few days ago and I notice a constant clicking noise originated from the upper right corner of the keyboard. I thought it was a HDD problem so I brought back to the reseller and they agreed to change another new one for me. But then the clicking sound appears again on the new one. I went to the other shop and test on their display unit and notice there's the same clicking sound also. Just wanna ask Isit normal?

Sounds sad. That can be really annoying.
My friend has a Lenovo laptop, U31-70, consider an ultra book as well. That model also has a similar problem.
Felt empty when u press / apply pressure on the keyboard.. or even the screen.
somehow have a cheap built of that laptop.
