Hi guys,

I wanted to know if anyone have handled 200mm f/2.8L II before? It seems like this lens is less talked compared to the likes of 70-200 or 135mm f2.

I prefer prime lens as it is lighter than zoom lens.

My primary purpose eyeing this lens is to use it for plane spotting & Motorsport photography use and also for low light usage due to the f2.8.

Should i get this first or save up for 400 F5.6 instead?

I see that both 400 f5.6 and 200 F2.8 does complement each other in different situation.

I look forward to hear back from the group soon.

Happy 6d version 1 user here. thumbsup.gif

Used to have one ages ago, both 400 5.6 and the 200 2.8, For air plane, the 400 5.6 is the ideal candidate for the budget but not some much for motorsport. If you are shooting motorsport in control environment and not limited access like big circuit tracks, then may be 200 2.8 probably can swing it.

Keep in mind that the 400 5.6 has no IS and not easy in handheld, it has a rather long barrel and need min of 1/800s to get a sharp image without motion blur (at least for me) if you are on the rush for quick snap.

Can you share how does this two lens served you? I read that these two lens were quite a sleeper hit if one can accept it being prime lens instead of the usual 70-200.

I didn't get to use much of the 200mm, i was using it for outdoor portrait but 135/F2L works better. The AF is very fast, and with 2.8, it is a rather useful indoor sport lens on the budget.

for the 400, i used it for BIF (Bird in fight) handheld. Sold it when i brought the 100-400 II.

If me, i would rather get the 70-200 F2.8, II/III than having these two old balls. Unless, of course, you are on a tight budget to get a sharp primary used prime 400mm lens. It a very sharp lens but difficult for variety occasions.

Promotion is regional. Canon runs a different champaign in Malaysia - free memory card, adaptor/ring, flash and canon monthly payment is current promo. In the past, i got free card, two batteries, adaptor and rm 300 instant rebate.

Okay, that's fine I guess. If it was me I'd go for the USD300 discount tbh. That's almost RM1300 off. The other accessories don't interest me at all. Oh well.

Was going to get a ProGrade but settled with Sony with bigger capacity and same class but higher rating for my R.
