Hi all, anyone compared overseas transactions currency rate for the 2 cards? Since both cards give 5x tp for overseas transaction. Any significant difference in the rate? I remember I read the Amex card for overseas spending will calculate into US dollar first, then add on a certain % ( more than 1%).. so which card to use for overseas merchant? Thanks!

AMEX - it's per what you written and the fee is 2.5%
VISA- 1% levied by Maybank + 1.25% by VISA

Most of the time, VISA wins. Because of the mechanism, Amex fee end up could be slightly higher than 2.5%

Last but not least, also depends if there's any promotion or contest by Visa or Amex. Don't mind paying slightly more

Thanks!!

something related back to the 2 cards.

Will you pay extra (say 2.5%) to use the credit card to pay for your purchase, in order to receive TP?

I read someone wrote is worth paying 0.8% credit card charge for the LHDN tax payment, but if 2.5% seems a bit too high? any thoughts?

thanks!

Foreign transaction? What other option u have

not foreign transaction, just that the merchant accept cash and cheque. For credit card payment, need to add on 2.5%.

If can use amex to pay for 5x TP I would do it. Since the miles for me is worth more than the 2.5%. If can only get 2x TP, no.

Thank u.
But how do u get the calculation? say if I make a transaction of RM 40,000. For 2x TP, I'll get 82,000TP, with RM1000 charge. For that amount of TP, convert to miles is 18,222. Roughly a return ticket to Hong Kong. So is not really worth the RM1000. Am I right?

If you earn 2x TP, forgot about it.
5x TP is ok.

As per your calculation:
20k miles get you a HK return ticket (don't forget the additional ~RM300 airport tax).
So you need to pay RM1000 (2.5% fee) + RM300 = RM1300 for the "free" ticket.
You can easily get a ticket at this price (or even lower) and if you pay with Amex, you will earn another 5x TP.

Yeah, like your calculation RM1000 surcharge to get 80k TP which is 17,777 miles. Almost 6 cents a mile which is what I value them around.

But if 5 TP, you'll get 200k TP which is 44,444 miles. Only a little more than 2 cents a miles. Definitely value la unless you have more miles than you can spend.

In short (for me), 5x TP worth it to pay 2.5% surcharge. I just redeemed companion award on CX for my wife KUL-JFK-LAX-HKG-KUL for 128k miles. The ticket I bought for myself was slightly more than 15k. So I got more than 11 cents value per mile

Thanks 👍🏻👍🏻

Want to ask if I use Amex to pay income tax with 0.8% surcharge. Do I qualify for 5x TP? or does it count as Government bodies with no TP?

BP. No point paying direct right since LHDN is government.

If use BP to pay, if more than 10k then need to separate into few times and have few receipts. Shouldn’t be a problem right?

Any other way to pay TNB? in order to maximize the return since only 1x tp if pay by Maybank 2 cards.

MU v West Ham Sunday 12.30am, means need to top up on Saturday, 13th Apr
Odds for MU winning is around 72%

Sorry.. as the match is on 14/4 Sunday 00:30 as stated on the MU site. Does the purchase/top up on 14th only qualify if MU wins? A bit confused..
