I just got myself a refurbished black macbook and me not being a mac user would like to appeal to you mac gods for some guidance. here are my questions: 1. where do files get installed to. i just installed yahoo messenger and i dont know where all the files went. 2. how to uninstall files? 3. was trying to connect to my D-link wifi router. i can see the A.P but i cant connect to it with WEP turned on. do macs have issues with non airport routers? now i connect to the D-link without WEP. thanks. oh by the way. anyone looking to get a macbook go to the US Apple.com store. they have refurb units up to 30% off. i paid for a unit which was advertized with only 512mb but they sent me one with 1gb of RAM. guess they were feeling festive

1. Apps in the Application folder ARE the actual programs themselves.
4. System Preferences => Network => AirPort and you should see AirPort ID right there.
Regarding where your Yahoo Messenger went to.. Try Spotlight? See that magnifying glass on your top right hand corner? Try typing 'yahoo' in it and see if you could find it.

1. The yahoo messenger files will be inside Applications folder only. Other application might go into users\System\Library folders
2. uninstalling files is the best part. Just drag your application that you want to uninstall into Trash or right click then Move To Trash and you are done. Empty Trash to clean up everything
3. Mac can connect to any WiFi router. Just key in your WEP password when prompt

thanks amdcopper
1. so apps are stand alone programs eg dmg files? no such thing as .dll files like in windows.
4. so thats what it is. i was was wondering AirPort ID was what it is.
more questions:
5. is there a button/icon i can press to minimize all windows to show the desktop like the Show Desktop icon in WindowsXP's quick launch?
6. how to right-click with the single button on the touchpad? coming from a windows envionment, its kinda odd to work with just one button. for for the life of me i cant understand why they only have one button when the right button adds so much more functionality and ease of use/ productivity to the UI.

If u dont have Appzapper, can do a Spotlight search of the app name and delete all the related files.

Welcome to the Mac world
Programs are pretty easy to install. You drag and drop to the application folder. To delete it , simply trash it [it delets the application but not the library files and stuff like that]. So you need to use appzapper
Okay , click on your Airport logo thingy and choose your network. Then dont choose WEP Password . instead choose 64-bit/40-bit or 128-bit [depending on your network key] It should work

QUOTE(bola @ Dec 29 2006, 06:12 PM) more questions: 5. is there a button/icon i can press to minimize all windows to show the desktop like the Show Desktop icon in WindowsXP's quick launch? 6. how to right-click with the single button on the touchpad? coming from a windows envionment, its kinda odd to work with just one button. for for the life of me i cant understand why they only have one button when the right button adds so much more functionality and ease of use/ productivity to the UI. these are the questions not yet answered... 5. F11 is the button....it pushes everything to the side to reveal ur desktop....go to systems preference-dashboad and expose....u'll learn it there 6. to right click, u can either tap the trackpad with 2 fingers or CTRL+tap....make sure u enabled the tapping feature in systems preferences-keyboard and mouse-go to trackpad tab-and tick the neccesary boxes there

i still cant right click on items with the two-finger tapping of the touochpad. am i doing something wrong?
and is it just me or does the mouse seem to be really slow initially when you start moving it then zooms off after a while? its really annoying the hell out of me.

Check your system preferences-->Keyboard & mouse--> trackpad settings.
tick "trackpad using two fingers for secondary click"

oh i just read what it says... "Place two fingers on trackpad AND click button for secondary click" i kept tapping the trackpad... guess windows habit is kinda tough to shake. anyway after having the macbook a few days i still think that the 2 button trackpad config is better than one.. adds more functionality to the UI oh can anyone tell me where i can get Mozilla Firefox aside from Mozilla.org? been trying and trying for days to download it but i cant seem to get it due to recent net cable problems in taiwan.

Uh... you can tap the trackpad with two fingers... It's just that you haven't ticked "Clicking" under Trackpad gestures.

Try decreasing the tracking speed? Are you using any 3rd party mouse drivers such as SteerMouse or USB Overdrive?

Ok, so you're actually using a wireless mouse. Try to look for either SteerMouse or USB Overdrive from macupdate.com. Those apps offer alot of options to adjust your mouse cursor tracking and acceleration speed. Both apps are not free but USB Overdrive can be used forever with no registration - the only catch is the nag screen which pops up whenever you load up the app.
