China telecommunications company coming soon ?

http://focusmalaysia.my/Mainstre ... %20telco%20operator

Chinese state-owned telecommunications company is poised to penetrate the local telcomarket. It’s entry into the tightly contested industry might see it paying more than RM3 bil to secure one of two telecommunications spectrum blocks made available following the recent reallocation exercise.

Its entry will also bring cheer to consumers as it might spark a price war among the major players.

The telecommunications industry in China is dominated by three state-run businesses – China Telecommunications Corporation, China Unicom and China Mobile. All three companies have 3G licences and are engaged in fixed-line and mobile businesses.

A source notes that the spectrum bid comes hot on the heels of state-owned Chinese companies making investments in Malaysia in 2015.

The source says the spectrum award was decided after direct negotiation between the two countries. The price tag of more than RM3 bil for the spectrum is also far higher than what existing players are expected to pay.

However, MCM spokesperson Sheikh Raffie says it is still reviewing the fee and determining the optimal usage of the 700MHz, 2,300MHz, and 2,600MHz spectrum bands by the end of 2016 as previously announced and he is not aware of the possibility of a foreign telco player getting the spectrum.

The Chinese telco will likely be the second foreign player to enter the market after Norway’s Telenor ASA which controls Digi through a 49% stake in DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd. Digi started operations in 1995.

Opportunities for new players to operate in the telco industry will emerge following the recent reallocation of the telco spectrum from those that aren’t doing much with it to others with potential. After the refarming exercise, there remain 2x5MHz bands.

Existing players will probably need to fork out a huge sum in spectrum fees, which may be front loaded. Observers expect the MCMC to reveal the amount by mid-year (2016).

On Feb 1 2016, the MCMC announced the redistribution of the 900/1800MHz spectrum for a fee to Maxis, Celcom, Digi and UMobile for 15 years. The regulator intends to issue the spectrum assignment to the four players by August 2016 for full implementation on July 1, 2017.

U Mobile Sdn Bhd, which had none of these blocks previously, was the fourth player to be awarded the new spectrum – 2x5MHz of the 900MHz band and 2x15MHz of the 1,800MHz band.

Effectively, Celcom and Maxis’ blocks of the 900MHz spectrum will be reduced to 2x10MHz from 2X17MHz and 2x16MHz, respectively while DiGi.Com Bhd’s share increased from2x2MHz to 2x5MHz.
For the 1,800MHz band, all three players’ share of the spectrum has been reduced to 2X20MHz from 2X25MHz each.

like I said previously. China Mobile might buy-over Maxis if the situation get worse. they have unlimited money to buy assets all over the world. Maxis is just peanuts for them.

but after Maxis financial result out. I don't think Maxis owner desperate to sell the company sweat.gif

for now, they're going alone 1st.

very disappointed with Celcom's network quality.. my wife who ported to them not long ago decided to port back under me as MOS as her phone is basically out of service when she's at her mom's @ kepong laman rimbunan, and only getting the "missed call SMS" after couple of hours, n she can only use whatsapp call when she's there.. hey, that's not even a remote area but a big housing area, c'mon Celcom u can do better than that!!! once upon a time Celcom is such a huge name in telco industry, what have u become since?  ranting.gif
*
well not all telco is 100% coverage. As u said, maxis is good at kepong laman rimbuanan. Then stay with them. No use if pay cheap but service sucks bigtime..
