Just collected my phone + Gear VR




Previous Samsung phone was S3... TW was a disaster that time. I believe its much improved now based on online reviews, so I'm gonna try to go unrooted this time round.

On paper everything is an upgrade from my Z1... SD800 -> Exynos 8890, 5" 1080p LCD -> 5.5" 1440p S.AMOLED, 2GB RAM -> 4GB RAM , 3000mah batt -> 3600mah batt. Materials remain unchanged, its good samsung departed from the plastic days. Heck even the waterproof is improved from IP67 to IP68. I expect a lot from the camera since Z1 used to be the best amongst android when it first released.

still ok because I'm earning here now, and I won't be back in Malaysia for months to come. The free Gear VR is too enticing, and if I dont enjoy it I can sell it away, so in the end I still get the phone cheaper.

The real selling price is only £533 btw.... the rest is 20% VAT, end up become 639 syukurlah Msia ada GST

Yeah I went from S3 to Z1... mainly because of the cheap plastics and TouchWiz was really getting on my nerves that time. Then after Z1 sony was not playing nice anymore, Z2 was fine but I don't see the need to upgrade yet, the rest come out all didn't impress me. Z5 was ok but after I tried S7 edge I was impressed with how much samsung had improved, decide to give them another chance.

I just fully charged my batt to 100%, will post battery life tomorrow once I hit 10% or below.

I also replaced touchwiz launcher with nova prime.... I just dont like the placement of the app drawer on the left I do like the downloaded themes, at least some sort of customisation option compared to last time

phonearena battery testing always known to be a bit flawed. I'll believe anandtech more, or even gsmarena, better still get real feedbacks from users at forums like androidcentral and xda.

I've read some claimed that the Exynos variant is supposed to do better at battery life compared to the SD... time will tell

I haven't fully go through or utilise the edge screen yet.... still trying to think what shortcut I should throw in

and how sure are you the SD version is better than Exynos? If you wanted to say benchmarks SD version is faster in terms of single core performance (even so only a few hundred points), but when it comes to multi core Exynos rekt the SD in every single test. You may think this doesn't matter but more and more apps are starting to utilise mutli threading, and this is android we're talking about, not iOS.

Based on previous test on S6/S6e.... the sony is the better sensor, but not sure about this version of ISOCELL, whether samsung made any improvements.

Mine is exynos and I get Sony sensor. It's more of a mix now

It's considered VERY LOUD for a single speaker and furthermore its waterproof

but of course no match for HTC boomsound

don't take my word 100% thou... I've read reviews and they all say its slightly softer than S6. I came from the Z1 and that phone have a very weak speaker

First day battery life.

Screen brightness around 40%, Always On Display enabled, around 80% wifi 20% 4G. Usage - Instagram, Snapchat, Youtube, web browsing with Chrome, Facebook.

I believe with manual settings and RAW file tweaking will be even better

fake as in not really dark or...?

I just use auto mode and snap, but I checked the EXIF on my comp and the settings are

Pic 1 - f1.7, 1/10s, ISO 1250

Pic 2 - f1.7, 1/10s, ISO 500

I guess the EXIF explained why... the auto mode used a high ISO (1250) on such a bright scene, whereas on the 2nd pic strangely it resorted to using only ISO 500 where normally you're supposed to bump it higher.

I guess as with most cameras out there manual mode is needed to exploit the full potential.

I'll find one day with a suitable scene to shoot a RAW file and see how far I can push it with Lightroom.

I don't think any phone camera out there offer such extensive settings yet... not that I known of so far, but there might be some 3rd party app that allow you to do so.

Anyway there's RAW option and Lightroom editor to deal with that

After trying out my Gear VR.... now I hope samsung release a phone with 4K screen asap

Eventhough s7e screen is 1440p but you can still see obvious pixels when in VR mode which is understandable because your eyes is as close as possible to the screen.

Overall I could say the experience is very nice but not totally mind blowing because of the picture quality.... can't wait to try a high end VR like Rift or Vive

Overall I'm impressed with the camera so far, even my friend agrees the camera is on par if not better than her ip 6s. Maybe it's also because I'm coming from Sony, with their infamous waxy texture

BTW I don't know why you guys still bother to reply certain trolls with a newly registered account. They already show no intention of getting the phone yet they keep on nitpicking and posting stuffs that highlight the cons of the phone here

Just ignore them and move on. I haven't posted in the mobile section for quite a long time until recently and it seems the situation is still not improved compared to few years ago.
