Only certain players can support avi or wmv format, others you have to burn it into dvd/vcd format....

all dvd player support mpeg. mpeg1 for vcd n mped2 for dvd. but first dvd will read it header in the vcd/dvd b4 it play. so "normal" dvd player doesn't support *.mpg or *wmv if u not burn them in vcd/dvd format. think some dvd player support divx(*.avi). donno support wmv or not.

vcd essentially is mpeg1 while dvd is mpeg2

That's why all dvd players are able to play vcd as well.

.wmv, .rmvb and others are all entirely different compression technologies.

nonetheless, because of growing interest in certain formats such as divx, some dvd player would include the codec to play the file.

As public demands grow, i would expect all players in the future be able to play most formats.

But of course as of now, HTPC would be the ultimate solution to all. biggrin.gif
