Background
Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) IPSR serves as a central coordinating body for all the postgraduate programmes pursued in the university. It is responsible for the promotion of all postgraduate programmes. It promotes the programmes by providing counseling on course-content, fees, entry requirements and financial aids. It provides the operational support by providing advice on admission and classes. Also, it maintains communication with relevant bodies and institutions. All these are done to ensure that the postgraduate programmes are well administered, monitored and assessed to provide the best possible postgraduate experience.

IPSR also serves as a central coordinating body for research and development activities undertaken in the university. It establishes links with funding bodies. It formulates a mechanism for the administration of research grants and contracts. It facilitates the research and development activities by providing much needed assistance to researchers such as processing research fund applications and managing research grant utilization. It also compiles and verifies research publications. All these are for the enhancement of the research capacity and the quality of research outputs of the university.

Since its inception in 2004, IPSR has been managing the postgraduate education, the research and development activities and the research centres very successfully. Its graduands of postgraduate programmes and research outputs have been increasing over the years and these are clear indicators that UTAR is steadily becoming a leading centre of learning and research.

Postgraduate Studies Unit
This division serves as a central body for coordinating all postgraduate programmes offered by the Faculties in order to facilitate the administration of the programmes which includes admission; student & academic Records; examination and postgraduate activities. Providing administrative support to conduct postgraduate studies at UTAR is one of the primary functions of IPSR. This is in line with the requirement of Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) for UTAR to have an entity which will coordinate, plan and administer all postgraduate programmes within the university.

Research & Development Unit
The Unit performs a major role in coordinating the implementation of research projects, and provision of professional support for research activities. It acts as a central resource for researchers to obtain information on related research, regulatory and legal requirements, publications, external events and so forth.

Since research activities require substantial funding, the Unit places priority on identifying sources of external funding for research projects and facilitating applications for funding. Funding sources are not just restricted to public sector sources, but include private sector and international agency sources. To complement the external sources of funding, a University Research Fund has been set up to assist young researchers to develop their talents and capabilities further.

The Unit will highlight research activities in UTAR as a form of mechanism to install good practices in research and development. It will also compile publications created by UTAR academic staff for strategic planning of resources and evaluation of staff productivity. On a daily basis, its R&D Management sub-unit will disseminate any external grants available; process application for internal funding; manage the funding mechanism stipulated in the research agreement.

A Coherent Framework For Identity Management In Mobile Cloud Computing

Project Summary:
Cloud computing is a new technology that provides storage and computation facilities to the end users over the public internet. Currently, a significant number of users access the cloud services via their mobile devices. In despite of their convenient and easy use to access the cloud services, the mobile devices are more vulnerable to the security challenges than PC’s. One of these challenges is the identity management. For instance, the ease losing or stealing the mobile devices, which hold sensitive and personal information, let the unauthorized people (i.e. theft) to access the cloud services without any more verification. Accordingly, the conventional identity management (IDM) systems, which utilize the single sign-on and federation techniques, are not suitable for the mobile cloud computing. Therefore, the need for identity management systems that consider the mobility challenges should take the highest priority. This is why this research introduced aiming at overcoming the flaws of the current IDM systems by constructing a coherent IDM framework. As a part of the proposed framework, a secure identity management system will be implemented that improve the security by distributing the verification process among the IDM server and the cloud server. Another security feature of the proposed framework is utilizing the homomorphic signature by sending the user’s detail as a binary vector instead of attackable encrypted data. By proposing this identity management framework, cloud providers and mobile devices’ users will be able to handle the identity management process in a secure way.

Development of a Fast-Responded and Utility Integrated Energy Storage System to Provide Ancillary Services under High Intermittency of Photovoltaic Systems

A candidate with the electrical engineering background will develop the effective control algorithm for the energy storage system for peak reduction and smoothening the demand fluctuation. A candidate with a background in computer science is needed to commercialize the control algorithm so that it will be robust when it is used in the commercial sectors.

Job Description :
A 400 kW energy storage system is to be built at Sungai Long Campus to supply power to the campus to reduce the maximum demand and also to smooth out the intermittency of the load demand caused by the renewable energy. An effective control algorithm has to be developed and implemented into the energy storage system so that the energy storage can supply power appropriately to reduce the peak demand and also to smooth out the load fluctuation. Hence, the electricity bill can be reduced by 30 % and the utility company can minimize the operating cost by using less peaking power plants.

Applicants with a good Master of Engineering or PhD in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering or in related fields are encouraged to apply.

Two Ph. D. candidates will be recruited. Candidate A will design the near- and far-field RFID tag antennas. Project Background:
Rapid developments of radiofrequency technologies have brought about a big leap in the advancement of tag antenna design. As a key part of the radio-frequency identification (RFID) system, tag antenna has received much attention because it can affect the system performance significantly. Since a tag is usually attached to an object, its antenna size must be made compact enough. Modern RFID tag antennas are required to be compact and useable in complex environment. Designing a tag antenna involves tradeoffs between impedance matching, antenna gain, and circuit size. So, optimization is always a must. The aim of this project is to design and optimize near-field and far-field RFID tag antennas using various optimization algorithms. Design of Experiments (DOE), Neural Network (NN), and Genetic Algorithm (GA) will be explored for establishing the simulation models for designing the RFID tag antennas. With the use of numerical results generated by electromagnetic solver, the models will be used for estimating changes in performances of a tag antenna statistically.

Project Objectives:
1) To explore new ways for realizing RFID tag antennas using different resonators. (Ph. D. candidate A)
2) To design and optimize RFID tag antenna using, DOE, Neural Networks, and Genetic Algorithm. (Ph. D. candidate B)

A joint research project entitled Energy-Efficient Optimization for Multiuser Video Transmission over Wireless between Laboratoire de Traitement et Transport de l’Information, Universite Paris 13 and Center for Communication Systems & Networks, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman is looking for a PhD candidate. The aim of this PhD research is to maximize the energy efficiency of coded video transmission over next generation wireless networks.

The ideal candidate should possess:

Job Description:
Sound can be defined as the variation or fluctuation of air pressure in the air. Depending on the medium where sound travels, the compressed and expanded air pressure causes molecules in the medium to vibrate back and forth to generate a wave that is capable of transferring sound energy. When a sound hits an object, it causes small vibrations on the object’s surface.

This research intends to recover sound that produces these vibrations on the surface of an object by means of a video footage of the object of interest. The project will develop an algorithm based on the Eulerian phase-based approach to convert the small changes in motion and colour in videos which is hard to be perceived by the human naked eye or also known as subtle vibrations, to recover sound. With this new remote sound acquisition technique, many of the objects in normal surroundings can be turned into “visual” microphones as long as the audio signal is strong enough to generate the subtle vibrations on the object of interest.

One of the motivations that inspire this research is to improve existing surveillance system and eventually reducing the crime rate. Most existing closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs), especially the ones installed outdoor, only provide video monitoring without any audio signal. This opens up the opportunity for the developed algorithm to recover sound through imagery, where it gives users the ability to recover sound when necessary despite not having any audio input. The algorithm can provide an added value to the surveillance system as it can be easily implemented on the existing systems without any additional hardware thus providing another alternative in sound recording/recovering which is not possible previously. Besides the ease of implementation on the existing systems, it promotes flexibility in the method such that the audio can be recovered only when desired and reduces the need of storage as a prerequisite when compared to the conventional built-in microphone.

The candidate is required:
- To improve a robust algorithm that is capable of converting vibrations to audible sound (codes will be provided)
- To recover sound from a few objects of interest using the improved algorithm.
- To study factors that can affect the quality of the recovered sound

Job Description:
A corner reflector antenna is made up of two rectangular metal plates that are connected at one end. Typically, the plates are connected at an angle of 90º. A feed antenna which usually is a dipole, is used as the radiating element in the corner reflector. The dipole is placed right in front of the vertex of the reflector at a distance away from it, which is called the feed-to-vertex spacing. Corner reflector is used to direct the emanated waves from the feed to a desired direction. The analysis of the corner reflector antenna is usually performed using method-of-images, due to its simplicity. However, in method-of-images the reflector plate is assumed to be of infinite extent. This leads to inaccurate prediction of the radiation properties of corner reflector antennas. These inaccuracies are more profound in the case of feed-to-vertex spacing of more than 0.7l. In the traditional method-of-images, this corner reflector problem is modelled as a set of 3 images. Two of the images are 180º out of phase and one is in-phase with the source. The images and the source, four altogether, occupies a 90º-sector each and the resultant array factor is calculated for the corner reflector. Unfortunately, this simple model does not take into account the finite length of the reflector plates. In the case of small feed-to-vertex distances, whereby the reflector plates are electrically large, the “infinite plates” assumption of the method-of-images would hold and a reasonably matched radiation pattern can be derived using the method-of-images. However, if the feed-to-vertex spacing increases by more than 0.7l, the reflector plates can no longer be assumed to be electrically large. The use of the traditional method-of-images results in erroneous radiation pattern prediction. Nulls and peaks of beam are wrongly predicted in the included angle of the corner reflector. In this project, the method-of-images is studied for a small ground plane. It is found that for a finite ground plane, a weight (<1) can be applied to the image and the image can also be split into a few discrete points. Furthermore, the images are shifted nearer to the ground as opposed to the traditional method-of-images. Traditionally the number of image charges for a square-corner reflector is 3, however, by applying the modified method-of-images, 16 image charges are obtained. Preliminary studies shows that these modifications to the traditional method-of-images produces radiation pattern that resembles closer to the actual pattern. Candidate will be required to extend this work to come up with a full theoretical explanation on how the new method-of-images can help to explain the radiation pattern.

Job Description:
Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death globally according to the World Health Organization. About 100 thousand of Malaysians suffer from cancer each year. When detected early, cancer is more likely to respond to treatment, leading to higher chance of surviving and lower treatment cost. However, about 60% of the reported cancer cases at the time of diagnosis in Malaysia are in the late stages.

In Malaysia, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is one of the standard medical imaging techniques for cancer diagnosis. Its strength lies in the ability to probe the metabolism of tissue and thus identify aggressive cancer from normal tissues. However, PET exposes the patients to ionising radiation, increasing the risk of developing new tumours. Whilst MRI is sometimes used to support PET imaging, it has not been able to supplant PET despite being lower cost and non-ionising.

The recent development of CEST MRI may offer equivalent metabolic information to that provided by PET without any of the associated risks and at substantially lower cost. This project aims to transfer CEST MRI from Oxford University to Malaysia and start a pilot study to use CEST MRI in brain cancer patients at UKM Medical Centre.

The successful candidate has to register for Master or Phd by Research at UTAR and will be paid a monthly stipend of RM 2500 in the first year and renewable in the second year, depending on the performance. The candidate needs to spend time at UTAR and UKM.

Job Description:
Investigation on the utilization of power electronic devices in the new generation surge protection devices (SPDs).

Analogue devices have great immunity behaviours against lightning strike or electronical surges. However, due to the vast advancement of switching technology, most devices nowadays are built in integrated circuit (IC) which exhibits low resistance against surge. Moreover, transformation from linear world into switching world has exposed electronic systems into multiple surges environment. Beside lightning surge, the surge may come from switching surge, capacitive discharge surge, etc that lead to difference kind of harmonic distortion or spike. The impact of climate change may be one of the factors where surge protection industry must take into considerations, increases power carrying capability of transmission line using HVDC, increase of lightning strike activities and its current strength triggered that the standard for surge protection in safe and hazardous area has to be revised.

Traditionally, surge protection devices (SPDs) available nowadays are based on the MOV, GDT or spark gap which exhibit some weaknesses such as cannot withstand multiple surges, slow response, etc. Due to vast technology improvement of power electronics area, to replace the conventional MOV and GDT with power devices such as MOSFET and IGBT seems possible due to its high switching performance, low energy loss and smaller in size. In current project, feasibility of power devices as a part of the surge protection system will be thoroughly investigated.
Objectives:
(i) To investigate the suitability of current IEC standard for lightning protection based on the Malaysia climate.
(ii) Simulation on surge generator based on 1.2/50 voltage and 8/20 current waveforms.
(iii) Failure mode analysis of surge protection devices based on MOV and GDT.
(iv) Assessment of the feasibility of power devices and its surge withstand characteristics.

-The candidate has to register for a Master by Research at UTAR and will be paid a monthly stipend of RM 1,600 - 2,000 in the first year and renewable in the second year, depending on the performance. Salary adjustment depends on the performance.

Job Description:
-Bagworms are one of the major pests in Malaysian oil palm plantations. Current agricultural practices, which mainly utilize chemical pesticides or microbial pathogens may create disturbance to the ecosystem function in the plantations as well as cause negative impact to human health. One way to promote a more sustainable and healthy crop management is to use natural enemies as an alternative to pesticides in the plantations. Natural enemies of the bagworms such as parasitoids are potential to be used to control their populations and prevent outbreaks.
In this project, the candidate is required to learn:
1. to identify the insect parasitoids of bagworms,
2. to culture the parasitoids,
3. to examine the insect parasitoids microscopically,
4. to study the preference of the insect parasitoids of bagworms toward potential attractants in host-searching, and
5. to analyze the volatiles
