You would need a soundcard (be it onboard, pci or external one) to have a SPDIF out. The other one would be optical out(infra-red). Both are considered digital, just different technology and using different cables.

Then make sure your speaker do indeed support SPDIF in. SPDIF cables looks like RCA cables while Optical out (infra-red) features a tiny head on both sides.

Not point using digital mode, if you have a soundcard with better DAC, like Prodigy or X-Fi.

SPDIF = Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format

the two companies being the primary designers of the S/PDIF format for digital audio signal. by the way, SPDIF is a format, not the physical connection type. the physical connector of SPDIF can be optical or coaxial. in short, SPDIF not = coaxial. the one u talking actually is coaxial smile.gif

starting from last year, edifier emphasizes "environment protect woofer", fulfill the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) standard. heavy metal such as Plumbum, Mercury, Cadmium etc... and Flame retardants such as Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) & Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) doesn't contains in the products. it minimizes the harms toward human & environment. this is what edifier strongly "deploy & lead" (倡导 << need help for translation), & as a leader in this speaker system industry.

hi,noob here.
firstly,i apologise if i offend yall edifier fan.but....
around 3 years ago,i bought s4.1,n unfortunately i'm very dissapointed n the speaker been in the storeroom ever since.

i listen to hip hop/rnb,n hoping for clarity n thumpin bass that makes ur chest hurt(jus like car woofer...like when u stay in abeng discotheque...)
as i jus realize this forum,i got the urge to rejuvenate my dusty s4.1...
my first plan is to get phillip 805.
can someone guide me on this speaker mod or somethin?preamp?change cable?
i hope to unleash the beast within....
sorry if i'm too noob for yall, yall otai,i'm jus a padawan... heading to the darkside...
*
Actually, it doesn't need a preamp. Change cable...not sure whether you need them or not. It's quite hard to notice big difference with different cable. The if you like beng kind of bass, there's no way the S4.1 will satisfy you wink.gif

If you are dissapointed with its bass, definitely S2.1D is not for you. You should be looking at logitech z2300,the klipsch gmx, the CS21 or the upcoming MK2
