Lucky if can retrofit Panzer III turret with anything, considering they were originally were armed with tiny 50mm gun only.
Considering the Arab-Israel wars are already 60 years ago, an age before ATGMs, irrelevant remains irrelevant. laugh.gif

Brussels attacks underscore challenges in dealing with terror threats

user posted image

SINGAPORE - There will be a major upgrade of measures to respond to terror attacks, but Singapore still has to prepare itself for such threats, reiterated Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam on Wednesday (Mar 23).

This comes a day after a series of blasts ripped through Brussels airport and a city metro station, killing at least 34 people and wounding more than 180.

Speaking at an event at the Holy Tree Sri Balasubramaniar Temple in Yishun, Mr Shanmugam said the threat of a terror attack has evolved significantly into "a serious monster".

He noted the difficulty of dealing with such terror threats, adding that "Brussels was in a heightened state of alert and yet the attack took place".

"We have to prepare ourselves, and I think every major city has got to prepare itself," he said.

"There are measures in place but I again emphasise that unless you turn the entire city into a prison, it's not going to be possible to counter every possible attack."

Last Friday, Mr Shanmugam announced a major ramp-up of Singapore's counter-terrorism measures, as the threat of terror attacks is at its highest level in recent times.

He stressed the threat posed by ISIS, and said it was no longer a question of whether, but when, an attack will take place in Singapore.

Mr Shanmugam revealed that Singapore will be strengthening its security architecture, including having more closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in public places, and training emergency response teams to react swiftly to attacks.

There is also a need for building owners and event organisers to impose stringent security measures.

In addition, a new national programme called SG Secure will be rolled out to organise and train residents to protect society from attacks and ensure that racial and religious harmony is maintained.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militant group has claimed responsibility for the Brussels attacks.

The explosions comes days after last Friday's arrest of Salah Abdeslam - the prime suspect in the Paris terror attacks - in Brussels after four months on the run.

Two blasts were at Brussels Airport, and a third explosion went off at Maelbeek metro station just as commuters were on their way to work during rush hour.

Nyet. 105mm is too unstable for the tank, even a low pressured cockerill 105mm gun. Better install 30mm gun because they have the capability to manufacture them
*
Why unstable? There is after all Stryker MGS... can be used as assault gun than pure IFV killer. Or urban ambush against tank side armour, 105mm would have much higher chance of scoring a kill.

edit: Oh its still unknown what armament will be mounted...

U.S. Officials Bash ‘Shitty’ Belgian Security Forces

user posted image

QUOTE
The twin terror attacks in Brussels that left at least 30 dead and 230 injured on Tuesday, despite repeated warnings from Washington, left U.S. officials fuming.
QUOTE
A senior U.S. intelligence officer likened the Belgian security forces to “children.”
QUOTE
The Belgian authorities had long struggled to resource a counterterrorism campaign. At the same time, it ostracized its burgeoning minority communities, creating isolated enclaves like Molenbeek where potential jihadists could easily hide
QUOTE
Many of those wandering mujahidin have now returned to Brussels; and there is little confidence that the Belgian authorities will be able to stop their murderous plots against the West.

No, I mean the idea of recommissioning 60-year old tanks to active service. Especially if the separatists have even more tanks and armored vehicles than some developing countries.

Syria forces on brink of retaking iconic city of Palmyra from ISIS

user posted image

QUOTE
Regime forces launched an offensive to retake the city at the start of the month backed by heavy Russian air strikes.

Moscow said last week that it was flying up to 25 sorties a day to help government forces liberate what President Vladimir Putin described as a 'pearl of world civilisation'.

But ISIS has fiercely resisted the advance, killing at least 26 pro-government fighters on Monday alone, the Observatory said.

Aamaq, an ISIS-linked news agency, claimed that 30 troops were killed in an attack by a jihadist suicide bomber.

ISIS has also claimed to have killed five Russian soldiers as well as fighters of Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah in the battle for Palmyra.

Raytheon Wins Contract to Develop CHAMP Missile for Electronic War

user posted image

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Air Force ordered a $4.8 million contract to continue work on a counter electronics, high-powered microwave weapon to be carried on cruise missiles, the Raytheon Company announced in a press release.

“The US Air Force has awarded Raytheon Company $4.8 million to continue the Counter-Electronics High Power Microwave Advanced Missile, known as CHAMP, aboard the Conventional Air-Launched Cruise Missile (CALCM),” the release stated on Wednesday.

CHAMP is a payload that can disable adversaries' electronic systems, the release explained.

“Non-kinetic systems give the [United States] the option to defeat enemy infrastructure with little collateral damage,” Raytheon Advanced Missile Systems Vice President Thomas Bussing said. “The pairing of CHAMP and CALCM, a proven weapon, lowers risk and brings tomorrow's capabilities forward to today.”

As part of the contract, Raytheon will refurbish the CHAMP payload and a pair of CALCM cruise missiles and deliver them to the Air Force Research Laboratory, the release added.

The new project is the first major CHAMP activity in the US defense-industrial sector since the Air Force Research Laboratory successfully demonstrated the technology in October 2012, the release noted.

SOLDIER SHOOTS DOWN DRONE WITH CYBER RIFLE AT DEFENSE SECRETARY'S FEET

user posted image

QUOTE
Built by the Army Cyber Institute at West Point, the rifle was demonstrated last fall at the Association of the United States Army exposition in Washington, DC. Unlike pretty much every other variety of gun, this rifle doesn’t shoot any projectiles. Instead, it uses an antenna, wi-fi radio, a cheap Raspberry Pi computer, and a known weakness in the Parrot quadcopter to jam the controls of the drone, sending it crashing to the ground. The design could presumably be tuned to take down other drone brands as well.

This version was built by Captain Brent Chapman for the the Army Cyber Institute at West Point, and cost just $150 in parts. That makes it exactly the sort of weapon, built from existing information and commercial technology, that DARPA’s looking for in a new program. Success breeds imitation, or perhaps because design converges, as soon as Chapman debuted his rifle in October, another version came from defense contractor Battelle.

As the anti-drone arms race continues, expect to see many more devices like this emerge. $150 is cheaper than most commercial drones, and way cheaper than many more elaborate anti-drone weapons. Plus, no eagles required.

This Danish Helicopter Pilot Has Gonads of Steel

The Danish arctic patrol ship HDMS Ejnar Mikkelsen frequently patrols the area around Greenland between the North Sea and the Norwegian Sea. Currently it's just north of Scotland headed to that very patrol area. The seas in this part of the world can get particularly rough—maybe too rough to land a helicopter in.

Or not. The undated video above shows a Danish MK90B Lynx helicopter attempting to land on the Mikkelsen's pad in stomach-churning rough seas. It's touch and go for a while, with the 1,700-ton patrol ship wallowing in some serious swells. Suddenly the swells calm and the pilot quickly seizes the opportunity, plopping the helicopter on the deck to a safe landing.

And then, presumably, going inside to change his or her underwear.

Did Pakistan Decide to Buy China’s Newest Attack Helicopter?

user posted image

QUOTE
The helicopter gunship has been undergoing performance evaluations (on and off the battlefield) since 2015 when Pakistan purportedly received three Z-10s (along with one Z-19 Black Hurricane armed scout helicopter).

Up to now, the Pakistan Army has not made an official announcement on whether it intends to induct the helicopter, although an unknown number of Z-10s are allegedly already in service with the 35th “Mustangs” Squadron of the Army Aviation Corps.

Perhaps, one of the reasons why the military has not declared publicly that it will opt for the Chinese gunship is that it is not satisfied with the performance of the aircraft. According to some analysts, the helicopter is plagued by the same issue that has been afflicting other Chinese aircraft: an under-performing engine.

The helicopter is currently operating with two under-powered WZ-9 turboshaft engines that prevent Z-10 from carrying its maximum payload potential including up to 16 AR-1/HJ-10 anti-tank missiles.

China, however, is already working on a new more powerful engine, the WZ-16, currently under development by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), which would solve the under-performance problem.

Despite engine issues, however, the Pakistan Army has allegedly been satisfied with the performance of the helicopter during counterinsurgency operations, where it has outclassed other helicopters currently in service with the military.

Taiwan gives press tour of disputed South China Sea ‘island’ to prove it isn’t a rock

user posted image

QUOTE
Proving that Itu Aba is an island in Taiwanese possession would be a huge coup for Taiwan, as international law entitles islands to a 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic zone, whereas rocks can claim just 12 nautical miles of territorial waters.

However, as with the rest of the South China Sea’s landmasses, several nations lay claims to Itu Aba. The Philippines in particular have contested that Itu Aba is in fact a rock, and not an island.

“Filipino lawyers have provided wrong information misleading the world, so we feel we have to come out to rebuff their claims… We hope journalists can see for themselves that Taiping is an island, not a rock,” Taiwanese President Ma Ing-jeou told the press upon returning to mainland Taiwan.
QUOTE
The US has sought to unite Taiwan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei, and Malaysia against China, who have built 2,900 acres of artificial islands in the South China Sea and militarized them in a perceived power play in a shipping lane that $5.3 trillion dollars in trade passes through every year.

Additionally, the claims of other nations to islands and territories off China’s coast prohibit them from possessing the kind of blue water navy Chinese President Xi Jinping aspires to.

In protest, China has rightly pointed out tha Taiwan is neither a member of the United Nations or the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), who regulate these disputes.

(LEAD) Military seeks to develop new patrol craft to bolster front-line defense

user posted image

SEOUL, March 23 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is seeking to develop a highly mobile patrol craft as part of its efforts to bolster naval defense along the maritime boundary with North Korea, military officials said Wednesday.

Through a civilian-military cooperative project, the military plans to develop a 20-ton "high-speed interceptor craft" (HSIC) that can travel faster than 60 knots per hour, or 111 kmph, the officials said.

The military plans to launch the project within this year and produce a prototype in five years so they can be stationed near the Northern Limit Line, the de facto sea border between the two Koreas.

The envisioned vessel is expected to have much enhanced agility compared with the 130-ton Chamsuri-class patrol craft currently in service. The Chamsuri-class boats are considered the Navy's most mobile vessels with a maximum speed of 38 knots per hour.

The HSIC is to measure 20 meters in length and 4 meters in width, and can carry a crew of 12, officials said. It is expected to have a maximum range of 300 nautical miles, or 555 kilometers.

The military anticipates that should the HSIC be deployed, it would be able to handle various military missions, including operations to fend off hostile infiltrations near the maritime border or other coastal defense actions.

The HSIC can also be used by the Coast Guard to crack down on illegal fishing boats, the officials said.

As part of efforts to bolster maritime defense, the military also plans to launch a project this year to build a 200-ton guided missile patrol ship, which it says is expected to strengthen the Navy's front-line defense operations.

Breaking the Silence: Indonesia Vs. China in the Natuna Islands

user posted image

user posted image

user posted image

QUOTE
Unlike the previous incidents, this time the Chinese coastguard vessel almost intruded into Indonesia’s 12-nautical mile territorial sea off Bunguran (Natuna Besar) Island (see the map above).
QUOTE
The marker and boat icon show where the KP Hui 11 intercepted the Kway Fey. The red dot marks the location where the Chinese CG officers boarded the Kway Fey; the large island to the west is Natuna Besar Island (source: KKP).
QUOTE
The incident started after a patrol boat from the Indonesian Ministry of Fishery and Marine Affairs (KKP), KP Hiu 11, seized a 300-ton Chinese fishing boat, Kway Fey 10078, and arrested her eight crew members for fishing within Indonesia’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) on the afternoon of March 19
QUOTE
Following a brief inspection, the crews of Kway Fey were transferred over to the Hiu, after which three Indonesian fishery officers from the Hiu commandeered the Kway Fey.
QUOTE
When the Hiu was either towing or escorting the Kway Fey back to base, a Chinese Coast Guard vessel suddenly arrived on the horizon, gave chase, and rammed the Kway Fey, forcing it to stop near the limits of the Indonesian territorial sea shortly after midnight on March 20. By this time, Hiu had already contacted its base for naval assistance. The navy dispatched a rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB), since no Indonesian warship is permanently stationed in Natuna.
QUOTE
At almost the same time, a second Chinese coastguard vessel also appeared in the vicinity. To avoid further escalation, the Indonesian officers on Kway Fey decided to abandon the fishing boat and return to the Hiu. Shortly afterward, Chinese Coast Guard officers boarded the Kway Fey to commandeer it away from Indonesian waters. By this time, the Indonesian navy RHIB had arrived at the location and began escorting the Kway Fey out of Indonesia’s territorial sea.
QUOTE
It’s telling to compare this incident with the arrest of the Chinese MV Hai Fa last year. At 4,306-tons Hai Fa is the largest foreign illegal fishing vessel arrested since Susi’s ministry began the crackdown.
QUOTE
Just last week, Susi ordered the sinking of the fishing vessel Viking barely a month after it had been arrested in Indonesian waters; the Kway Fey could have expected a similar fate.
QUOTE
China is renowned for using its fishermen as proxies to enforce its nine-dash or U-shaped line claim in the South China Sea, a claim that partly overlaps with Indonesia’s 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone near the Natuna Islands
QUOTE
But the way Indonesia responded to the latest incident was different: the KKP reversed Indonesia’s official tendency to downplay maritime incidents involving Chinese government vessels near the Natuna Islands.
QUOTE
The fortification and militarization of Chinese-occupied features in the Spratly Islands is continuing apace, which will eventually enable Beijing to impose greater sea control over the U-shaped line, including in the waters near the Natuna Islands. These features could also become springboards for Chinese long-distance fishermen to venture further south, escorted by the Chinese Coast Guard.
