Hi all, was introduce by aaltong into this forum and would like to share some of my photos, I started of photography about a year ago, but yet still a very newbie here whistling.gif , anyway, I am not good in writing, so lets let the photo do the talking....

This was from my very first model shooting of my life time, shot done back on 20060212, organised by a forum friend, he borrowed a few strobe flash and some backdrop, arranged a pretty model, then gather a bunch of hobbiyist to his apartment to practice model shoot, that time we all know nuts about lighting and composition, all of us ignored the strobe flash, just mount our own external flash and fire all the way, this is also the first time I met aaltong....

Let me introduce you, Fie Fie....

The pictures seem to have some over sharpening effects. Dunno whether it's my eyes or due to resizing.

I did apply USM after resizing, normally will be : Amount [ 60% ], Radius [ 1.0 ] pixels, Threshold [ 4 ] levels.

I think some portrait masters here might give you some pointers of applying USM for portraiture to reduce the over sharpening effects.

Wahhh ... this model looks very tender, I mean young tongue.gif
Gabai's weather favored you that day I notice brows.gif

For Pic 1, it's always good to get INTO the water and level with the model, creating a less distant feel. If you still wanna include the rocks, cover them with a wide angle lens.

For Pic 2&3, did you guys use a deflector? Looked like lighting fell unevenly on her face creating harsh shadows on her nose. Pic 2 again, never ever ask the model to pose with her lower body facing 90 degrees away the camera ... it's very odd and can be considered not a good pose, unless she's posing for another photographer. That's why I dun like group sessions.

For Pic 3, I am SURE you know the 2 injection marks are meant to be stamped away? tongue.gif Clipping on the right upper cheek bone and left shoulder as well. Keep your ISO low and set a higher exposure compensation instead if you wanna reduce clipping or blown highlights.

Noted for pix 1, yeah, that was at the beginning of the shot, I was standing at the dry land, a bit hesitated to go into the water, but at the later stage, dun care already, underwear also gone soak wet.

As for the shadow on pix 2 and pix 3, it was on purpose, I wanted to have a more 3-D effect by showing more of the shadow, too much already?

Noted for pix 4, will amend the pix and re-post.

Thanx.

You dun create a 3D effect by applying shadow onto the model's nose or chin or cheek : It's a common mistake done by lotsa newbies and even studio photographers. You do it by POSING the model in such a way she gives you that effect, not throwing unnecessary light onto her. It is called effect thru posing or angle, not thru light/shadow play any longer, any effort is considered overdoing.

Everyone's nose is '3D' enough, unless you are E.T tongue.gif

Added on March 27, 2007, 12:46 pmPlease bear with the BCG mark, my PP mostly concentrate on her face and lighting, always left out the other parts which needs to pay attention as well... :nono

Hi anthony,
Do you have a sample of the effect thru posing or angle? would like to see the differences and learn from it....  notworthy.gif
Thanx.

Plenty ... but under different day, different lighting conditions, different angle and composition and of course with dozens of models and occasionally PP-ed images. You learn nothing from samples, the advice I gave you are PRINCIPLES you hold on to and apply them yourself in your own photo sessions, unless you cannot imagine what I am trying to say, which I think its a totally difference thing.

Plenty of those in my gallery, Sweeann. Generally it's the way the girls pose that contributed to that effect. You need to have a pinch of wild imagination and some creativity to make it in photography, dun rely on samples all the time, create your own style and be innovative.

Create something OTHERS will copy, dun copy from others brows.gif

I think shadow and light play an important role in making the photo 3D-ish.
without it, the photo will look flat.
that's why we always check the lighting condition first, then compose and instruct the model pose accordingly.
But i think that particular pic, the reflcted light is too harsh and some area kena while other tak kena... so make it look a bit weird.

she is looking away from the light source.. that's why create hard shadow on the nose.
