I find that it really helps alot if you watch an English movie with the english subtitles. From there, you learn new words and the proper way of speaking and proper pronounciation.

Begin by reading english newspapers or if it suits you, read some english comics. Once you get the hang of it, move on by reading novels. Sometimes, listening to song while reading the lyrics also helps. ^^

I learn my mandarin and japanese via those methods. ^^
