Hugo Barra, the VP of Xiaomi, stated that the Chinese smartphone firm does not include MicroSD slots in its high-end devices because it reduces their overall performance. At first, we dismissed his claim as nothing more than an excuse to increase markup with each device sold, but now, we are inclined to agree with what he states, only after a customer went through a horrid experience with his Galaxy S7.

According to Sam Mobile, the author switched to a S7 after using a Galaxy S6, since he felt that the device was lacking in expandable storage flexibility. However, his experience after plugging in the storage card was egregious at best. He describes that:

“I’ve been using the cameras on both the Galaxy S6 edge and the S7 intensively, and on the S7, I noticed a strange and frankly irritating issue. I set the camera to save photos on the MicroSD card, and right from the get go, I noticed that some photos were getting all garbled up on the S7. Their thumbnails would show up fine, and so would the image when I opened it; a second later though, big grey boxes would start to show up all over the photo. I saw this with around one in every 20 images, but it did manage to ruin some photos that I initially thought had come out great.”

He also went on to describe that although MicroSD cards are very essential, companies should start adding more on-board storage to their mobile products, since they are less prone to corruption as compared to storage cards.

“Those who advocate against MicroSD cards often point out that you can never be sure how long a MicroSD card will last, and whether we like it or not, it’s indeed an important factor. Of course, for most users SD cards last longer than they would need, but when it comes to flagship smartphones, perhaps it is a good thing that Samsung, Apple or Google are only offering built-in storage. At this point, I’m wondering if I should buy a new card for the S7 or just make do with the 32GB of internal storage, a conundrum I would not be in if Samseng had decided to offer a variant that comes with 64GB of storage out of the box.”

Maybe firmware still buggy. I've been using HTC M9 directly store to SD card ... shot jpeg or raw also never experienced any issues.

do not compare different software and different brands.

we are talking abt samsung here.

nexus series never had micro sd and ppl always say it's smooth.

lol
*
But the quote you posted is saying the chinese makers don't use SD cos it reduces performance.

I'm just saying that its not necessarily the case.

Gimmick la. I'm on HTC and never used Zoe once also.

Camera mode wise.. So far the G5 pro mode seems the best. It displays the ISO, SS settings on top. Very useful.

All it needs is a histogram

The success of LG G5's modularity solely depends on the accessories and the companies producing them.
*
For that.. They need a big enough install base/market share. That's gonna be tough.

QUOTE(MPIK @ Feb 25 2016, 11:38 AM)
nice article from soyacincau.

but i am gonna wait for HTC M10 before deciding on my next purchase.

now using OnePlusOne. Got fedup with this phone. No official CM support + no MM updates.
*
I've been using htc since dopod with a short exception/foray into the iphone. Camera's important to me now and I. Don't think HTC has the capability nor the resource to come out with a class leading camera.

Thanks for the link.

Finally there's photos with exif intact.

It seems like the camera is relying on the OIS, keeping down to 1/10 shutter speed to keep ISO low. None of the shots were above ISO250.

edit: owait.. there's one on ISO1250

let's see. rumours is that this round HTC will be coming up with 12 Ultrapixels camera which is really really good in low light.

The previous 4 Ultrapixels camera is already very good in low light. The draw down is it is only 4mp.

The only thing drawing me back from getting samsung now is the placement of back button on the right which i think is not practical in day-to-day use since I already get used to my previous Nexus 4, HTC M7 and OnePlusOne which all follow Google guidelines to place the back button on the left.
*
IMO, the issue is not the camera module itself but more of their software, their jpeg processing.

Yeah.. need to get use to the tak logic placement of samsung's back button.

You can make an accessories that plugin the micro usb that look nice with the case and call it modular too... LOL

If you think the dac improve audio quality, why not include it in the first place? If you think it need a bigger battery, why shrink it? Why do you need a handgrip to take picture with smartphone anyway?

No one came up with anything interesting this year. I think Edge stole the story last year but thats it.

Cant wait for flexible display...
*
Errr.... cost?

Form factor? (since average joe die die want thin ass phones)

But yeah... I can't brain the camera grip

Cost? Hahaha... those DAC chip actually cost few dollars only... now how much would that piece of accessories sell for?
*
Few dollars is a LOT in the industry. Especially for a low key feature.

Low key? LOL... then why are they bragging about audio quality?
*
The mentality's basically like this...

- Prospective consumers to whom understand the feature are a small minority

- Consumers who makes their buying decision based on that feature are lagi smaller minority.

- Its very hard and cost money to market to the masses without a brand association or a figure that average joes using pasar malam Beat earplugs understand .....like Snapdragon or 64GB etc.

- There's slim price band for a non-apple flagship Android phone.

- LG could include it as standard but it provides very minimum returns for the costs incurred. 10million units multiply by X dollars is A LOT of money. Btw, decent DAC + amplifier etc cost more than USD12.

- Their cost for the G5 is already higher than the competition (my guess) due to having 2 separate lens and camera module among others.

- By having it as a separate module, they could provide the feature to those who wants it. Use the modular feature as a sellpoint for those upgrade/accessory freaks. Also by doing so, they also afford to license the B&O brand name to attract further buyers/brand whores.

Not recommended to claim warranty against water damage even with products marketed as water resistant though.

Nice. Wish to see how s7 compare with z5 series in lowlight. Z5 advertised with good lowlight which iso up to 12800.. Then s7 good in sensor and dual pixel.
*
Sensors this small regardless of the brand.. Backlight or none.. Falls apart above iso200. Difference is just processing.

Hardwarezone Spore did a photo shot comparison of the S7 vs S6. Judge yourself which is better?

http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/m/feature-s...s-better-photos
*
S7 looks like excessive sharpening and noise reduction at the cost of details. Artifacts all over the place even on the daylight photos

Not a good sign. Hope its just early firmware issue.
