Hi All,

I would like to introduce myself as a Uni student in a Communication program, that is required to take a series of photographs that demonstrated lighting and composition techniques.

My college doesn't have a fancy studio (in fact, no studio at all), and I am equipted with a XZ-1 Oly camera.

Basically, I can work around with the composition, but I can't find a way to do lighting. A few examples of my photos and the critique given by my lecturer are as follows.

1. High Light

"Interesting but what story are you trying to convey" me : ???

2. "Side Light

"Need to have more light"

3. Diagonals

4. Shadow

"Not interesting enough" Me : but how many times to do you see coloured shadows wor?

So I have to do...

Compostion
- Framing, Viewpoint, Direction-of-movement, Diagonals, Rule-of-Third, Object Isolation, Point-of-Interest

Lighting
- High/Front Light, Side Light, Shadow, Silhouette, Back Light

icon_question.gif How to do the lighting? Most of them online I see they do in studio, I try to replicate it and my lecturer says there's no story to it so its not interesting

try street scenes when the sun is at low angles and best before 10 am. you will get longer shadows and strong side light to make it exciting.

some colored shadows.. it is all in your mind. How malleable it is - your own imagination.. this photo is taken with a RM300/- Xiaomi Yi Action Cam mounted on a selfie stick so hardware is also not a limiting factor.
