Hello,

Anyone working in IBM here?

Is it good working at IBM? People make jokes like "don't join IBM" or "good luck" is it for real?
Something wrong with IBM?

I'm just looking at a junior position at Plaza IBM, but the vague feedback from people is worrying.

Don't listen to those people.

If you can join IBM, you are lucky.

I was lucky enough to explore the IBM environment for approximately 2 months. And I knew what was going on in IBM. Yup, IBM was a shared service center which incorporates the business around the world. Based on the large scope that is handled by IBM Malaysia, the work hour is tough sometimes. OT is unavoidable, sometimes it may work for whole day and night depends on the nature and volume of job.

Depending on what you're looking for and what you're expecting out from the position you're seeking. Some positions are real tough/mundane, etc..

Am currently working in IBM and what I enjoy the most would be the
1. Flexibility - If I work late last night, I'll probably go into office later than usual the next day; Work from home. (This would have to be discussed with your manager)
2. Role Change - Change to a different role/position around every 2 years so you can break routine and learn new things
3. Global exposure - Can deal with people from different countries and seniority; It's interesting to see how they sometimes view things differently from us.

Depending on which department you're in , culture might differ a bit.
Fresh grad pay wise, I wouldn't say its that great or that bad as well if I compare with other companies outside.

Not necessary if you're located at Plaza IBM. But outside plaza, most positions are IT related and technical.

Just apply and get interview and finally get the offer. You can decide at the end.

If you are fresh graduate, just get the experience first. Normally, after working for 5 years, you can see a big jump in your salary.

I am former employee of IBM and first batch pioneer during the migration of work from IBM Australia to IBM Malaysia.

First thing, it is not that easy to be enter into IBM for fresh grad because there is a aptitude test before advance to interview session.

Both Plaza IBM beside 1U and Cyberjaya are mainly cater for shared service, like my role sales support to ANZ was in Plaza IBM not cyberjaya.

I really thanks to IBM and the experience I gained there was the biggest asset which enligthen my future career.

1. IBM is generous in providing a lot of training to employees which you hardly get in HP (I been working for IBM and HP).

2. Please prepare to work OT (no OT claim except IT staff). Every staffs are expect to work OT and the workload is...

3. IBM follow rule and regulation, everything is in black and write and "approvals". No shortcut allow.

4. Initial salary is good but increment is not much. It is normal in IT industry for non-IT staffs.

Employee turnover rate in IBM is considered high because those who not tough enough will stay less than 6 months then give up. But there are also many people who can stay longer than 2 years and more. After you leave IBM you will find yourself easy to handle the workload in other companies. It is one of the best employer ever had though I feel tortured at that moment but it built me become a tougher person.

Got offer from IBM and they told that I must go through 3 months of training before they convert me to permanent. Been told that salary for the 1st 3 months will be RM1200 and after that will turn to RM2300 .
Hmm... Still very less for me to survive in this city ..

IBM- ini banyak masalah

If fresh grad, nothing to loose. If u have plenty of options then perhaps u may want to consider. If u only have 1 offer, then why bother thinking. It's an MNC and it helps your resume.

IBM is all about processes and it emphasizes more of it than some of than some of the cooler IT comp. No matter how nonsensical it is.. It's there. Makes u stronger? Maybe... Makes u a zombie... Definitely cause u will never be able to fight the process no matter how rational or logical u can be.

Same in every other MNC that u can join.

What kind of training u went?

I got an offer ti do training programme in IBM, but i decline because already got a perm job before. I got 1 friend go to the training. First 6 months, they get the same like u mentioned. After that, straight jump to 4k la. Regret didn't go berow...

But I do get an nice bargain offer from them 1 year later. Decline it for the 2nd time bcoz I already got an offer nearby my hometown.

I think i might wanna try IBM once again later on. Hope they didn't ban me. Hahaha...

I applied for system engineer but the 3 months training is to see you are more technically in maybe network field, or maybe other support role or other engineer. Donno how I can survive with that little amount of money. But quite a unexpected offer by such a big organisation. I heard that IBM was took over by lenovo.

From what i read last time, not totally take over. They just sell their consumer pc business to lenovo. Others, still IBM...

It is a global company with over 435K employees.
If u not short sighted (ie only care about salary and benefit) there can be many opportunities. Training programs. And in the future, to be seconded overseas. The possibilities are infinite if u play yr cards right.
It is also a typical MNC, in the sense that they are using MY for cheap labour. And redundancies come suddenly and mercilessly.

Every point is valid. After working in IBM, you can easily handle stress and the workloads outside IBM. You will be properly trained in time managing and multitasking lol.

And yea, it helps you to shine in your cv because getting picked to join IBM from fresh grad is considered a plus point to your second job interview.

Good luck in the many rounds of interviews. I think I had 5 rounds in the same day.

Sorry for necro-ing this thread. Any idea how's the working environment here in IBM?

Recently got a call-back from one of their recruiter asking if I'm available to join them in 2023 as a financial analyst. The job scope seems interesting.
