The auto-EQ makes the biggest difference to my ears.

In their "pure direct" mode which employs no PEQ, no bass management, no levels/delay set, then it would come down to power handling at different impedance. Some receivers will crap it self and sound bad just because the speaker dips into 4ohms while some others would still play along fine. Then some receivers would start sending distortion waves because they ran out of juice when the listener is playing his speakers at reference volume.

If that's the difference in "sound quality" that the so called audiophiles talk about... then, I guess they didn't learn what the hell ohms law is in school.

I've never tried the ypao on the yamaha, have just been using it as it is. From reading so much good things audyssey and room correction in general, I am going to try it out coz it seems to have a big impact.

Have not had any distortion on my modest yamaha so far so I am thinking that modest power is enough for my needs.

i got marantz sr5006 and denon x2000. denon is 1gen newer which support 4k pass thru.

both are same grade 7.1 amplifier with lan network only (i bought them used unit at same price too).
so from my memory of changing marantz -> denon able to produce the same sound in audyssey mode becos i use the exact same method during room calibration. playing movie volume unit same loud. chassis temperature same hot.

slight different in pure direct mode + loud volume. i cannot explain why i prefered the marantz.
both avr provide live feel soundstage, maybe marantz has the edge while denon a bit not natural.

function wise, my denon got video processor (i leave it off anyway). no 7.1 input rca
my marantz no video processor. got 7.1 input rca (only use hdmi anyway)

2sen

why i sell marantz is request from good friend, let go lo.
after up pioneer lx, cannot suit the mcacc, sold it. buy denon and keep using until now.
*
Thanks for sharing your experience with both brands. Good info yo help me choose.

given me pick 3. i take sr5011 for below reason.
bigger power supply at 650w vs denon 500w
hdam module
pre in & out rca

but marantz cannot show current sound format (pcm, dolby, dts...) in screen pernamently, also quite small info. where denon can.
x1300 never heard dunno how good or bad.
*
Thanks again. I think the marantz is shaping up to be the better option. Good info on the tiny display, but seems like a small price to pay for the better choice.

X1300 seems to be not as popular as the x2300 but its 33% cheaper so I am considering that as well. Based on the power rating, the marantz can probably play louder and cleaner. Its good to have the headroom.

price factor. yeah x1300 worth. i read thru specs. 430w power supply. same audyssey xt.
good thing about audyssey xt is 8 position calibration. i require it becos of mixed brand spk + funny room.

it lack video processor. able to overlay menu in full hd. but not 4k. so rely on avr screen to adjust volume.
*
I don't think I need video processing since the TV will upconvert everything to 4k native resolution. Is the x2300/5011 able to overlay menu in 4k? Not sure how important this is as I see most AVR menus don't look nice due to low resolution.
Even without video processing can see the volume on the TV right? I am able to see it now with my 371 when I change the volume using the TV remote (with ARC).

X1300W is awesome to me. Sound is good. Im using 5.1 on it only. Came from yamaha v375 i can tell this denon sound a little better. smile.gif
*
Thanks for chipping in, its good to hear your experience coz your v375 is probably very close sounding to my 371. Did you try YPAO previously & Audyssey now, how much difference does it make? Can you elaborate on how its better? Does it sound fuller, more detailed, can play louder, etc? Want to have an idea of what I can expect. Thanks.

eh. denon gui quite nice yo.
much win the pioneer one. yamaha words very small rite

That is good to know. My Yamaha doesn't have any GUI that displays on TV, have to rely on the dot matrix display screen. I've seen some Aventages and some other brands I don't remember which a few years ago that have really ugly (grainy text heavy) GUI but I guess as long as it works its good enough but sure would be nice to have a pretty gui.

i got short exp on yamaha 477. that generation already employ hd overlay with acceptable gui instead of big ugly text base ui like my yamaha 463.

pioneer onkyo gui cannot fully overlay in setup menu. only for quick shortcut.

marantz can do all the while. denon is mid-high models only.

from my exp of yamaha-> marantz/denon(same) is going loud. very stim yo.
low to medium has more bass coverage. center voice is forward out.
*
I see, I must've seen an older one then.
Does that mean Yamaha can go louder but not as nice as Marantz/Denon?

as i remember the sound become very sharp. still not enough bass kick. i test yamaha 3 and 4 entry series only.

aventage model will be different (i guess) as many sifu here satisfy with blasting setup.

I see. I think lower end Yamaha models always have problems with bass. Someone told me once that its because of lower voltage from the sub preout, not sure if this is true though.

Want to share my recent AVR experience.

I was here a few months ago asking about getting a new AVR. I wanted to get the Denon X2300W or the Marantz SR5011 to replace my old Yamaha RX-V371. I found a used Denon X1300W for a good price so I grabbed it. The features were good compared to my old AVR but the sound was very thin and not as exciting even compared to the yammy 371 I had previously.

A month later I sold it and bought the Marantz SR5011 (I actually made a gain because I sold the X1300 for a higher price than I bought it). I am happy to report that I am totally awed by it! The mids are just amazingly solid and my "docile" PSB sub just came alive and I can now feel the sub in my face and chest instead of just hearing it. Truly amazing to see such a big difference between these two AVRs, especially since the X1300 is only 1 step below X2300 and SR5011 in terms of product range.

The only shortcoming of the SR5011 is that the highs are not as exciting as the Yamaha was. The highs sound good and solid but doesn't tingle the senses like the Yammy did. I suppose the Yammy is a bit bright and the Marantz is warmer. Well, you can't have everything, but overall I'm very happy with the upgrade and feel that its a very worthwhile upgrade.

I would also say, that the X1300 is to be avoided. It's really not worth the price. Either spend more for the SR5011 or get a budget Yammy which may not be great but does sound a lot better then the Denon.

Good review there, but I think you are comparing different class.

Marantz SR5100 should be compared with Denon X3300W; btw both are under the same parent company
*
My comparison is accurate. The X3300 is higher range than 5011. Even the Audyssey version is different with Denon getting the better XT32. RSP for X3300 is USD1k vs SR5011 at USD900. Marantz always sells at a higher price compared to its Denon counterpart. Yes, I'm aware that both are under D&M Group. The X2300 is probably as good as the SR5011 but since both are selling at almost the same price here, my opinion is that the Marantz is more bang for buck due to pre-outs and more power (as per the max watts rating at the back panel). This was also consistent with the advice I got from this thread in April.

I currently have an Onkyo TX-NR609 a/v receiver for close to 5 years and it's been faithful all these years..recently I have issues on sound going off/coming back on, only in movies encoded in dolby true-HD, the other encodings (DTS HDMA etc) are okay..I am not sure if I would want to get it repaired, so I need opinions whether it will be fruitful to upgrade it instead...I am looking at the Denon x2400h, and I am wondering if there is a noticeable difference if I would get it..any other recommendations that doesn't cost past RM3.5k? Or should I get the 609 repaired instead?
*
Sounds like a software issue. Are you sure its the receiver and not the media player/source?

There's two potential shop. Style Laser and Desa Home Theater. For online there's Mudah, 11th street & Lazada (I think). Actually are shop owners genuinely selling new item or repacking back wan? Last time I went to DHT, they told me to give advance and then will send the goods the next 1 or 3 days. I'm having trust issue here.....  unsure.gif
*
That means that they have no stock at their place at that time. Can also buy from 11street. They had the cheapest price when I last checked but not by much. Repacking means what? Repack display set? If they do that usually it will be quite obvious coz their display set is not in perfect condition due to auditions etc. From my experience they usually will tell you if they are gonna give you the display set.

I don't mind used if there's a decent one available. They are hard to come by. As for Atmos, it is nice to have, but not a necessity.
*
If you don't need 4k/hdr/atmos/dts-x, you can find low mid-tier used units in mudah or hifi4sale. This would be good value for money compared to buying a new unit.

that was just for an example. I am totally noob with custom audio setup, that is why any input from sifus like you would be a high value to me..  biggrin.gif

i'm not expecting anything fancy like korek wall or anything, as long as the speakers are slim enough for wall mount and it sounds good, i'm already very happy with it..  laugh.gif

but base on what you've mentioned, what would be the most realistic budget for a 2.1 setup?

Thanks for sharing bro
*
Your best bet for under RM1k will be computer speakers (active speakers with their own built-in amplifiers). You will have to see what type of connections your TV has right now for external audio and make sure the active speakers are able to take that connection. You can use headphone out from your TV (not all TVs have this) or the RCA jacks (which are rare these days) or Optical out (most tvs have this but most PC speakers don't have it).

This is one good example I found at Mudah :
PSB Alpha

You can also find many new active speakers like Edifier, Thonet & Vander & others within your budget.

The downside of such systems is they are not scalable so you will not be able to add speakers, a subwoofer or an amp in most cases. But they serve the purpose of giving you much better audio than your TV speakers and most cheap soundbars.

Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with the ad in Mudah just sharing what I found.

One of my tweeter started to leak sound too
[attachmentid=9828698]

as u see from the pix, my speaker is a full range speaker, a 3-way 4-speaker system.
it have the following spec

Impedance: 6 OHMS
Frequence Respondse: 32 Hz - 20 kHz
Sensitivity: ±89 2dB/W/M
Recommended Amplifires: 20 - 250 Watts

the prob is... i do not know which tweeter to choose...
the mix and match is not for forte...

and i only use the system for movie... not music

---

ps: if i notice some frequency is missing on one speaker... does it mean my crossover is faulty also?
*
Choose the same type as your existing ones or experiment with horn or aluminium tweeters?

If those are branded speakers, you might be able to find their original drivers on ebay.

i dont hv other tweeter and i havent open up to look at it... yet

i think the original company folded...
my initial idea is to buy the same frequency range or higher...

is this sufficient? afterall i dont planned to go highend quality
*
I meant the same type as the one you want to replace i.e. dome / aluminium / etc. For tweeter frequency should be better to go higher but I think quality should always come first before frequency.

ok... actually never play around with tweeter b4
and i do not know my tweeter is dome/aluminium type

noted: higher frequency better

speaking of higher frequency, it is normal for tweeter to include part of human voice?
or it should be cover by mid range?
*
Vocals are covered by midrange. Tweeter only for high frequencies.

No, vocals don't just exist in midrange. Female vocals can go as high as 4khz and male voices can go as low as 200hz.

But just listing peak numbers doesn't mean a damn thing because that's not how vocals work.
*
While you are technically right, those are outliers and not the norm. Most vocals exist in the midrange.

That I am not sure. Generally denon is the high end and marantz is value for money
*
Actually its the other way around. Marantz is always sold at a premium compared to the equivalent Denon. And Marantz does not have low budget models like Denon, it starts at a higher price threshold.
For the equivalent models, e.g. X2400 vs SR5012, Marantz always has slightly better specs like HDAM and pre-outs which was already mentioned. Also, the total power draw in wattage is higher which may indicate better components.
Since is the pricing in Malaysia for the equivalent models are similar (as opposed to Marantz being significantly more expensive in other countries), it makes sense to get the Marantz instead of Denon.
