If the expenses of Tokyo is expensive, actually you can choose to study in rural area in Japan. The cost of living is cheaper compare to urban areas. In others hand, the percentage to getting a part time job will be lesser.
The tuition fee to study in Japan is around 600,000 yen per year for public university, and 1,200,000 yen + for private university. And most of the universities have tuition fee deduction up to 75%.
My gf studied in Japan. For her 4 years university life, she spent not more than RM20k. Actually less than this amount, if not included the travelling expenses and flight ticket to Japan and Malaysia.
The difficuty to study in Japan is you need to spent at least a year to study a Japanese language. But what you learned is not wasted, extra language skills help you be more competitive in career path. Many Japan MNC companies required japanese speaking graduated students in Malaysia.

Can Read chinese? if not, than really sorry my friends.

My gf worked part-time before during first and second year. Around 800 yen per hour in a Japanese Restaurant. She worked few hours a day, few days a week. Quite pity her, coz had to cycling an hour to work.
After she got the scholarship for 3rd and final year, she stopped the job immediately, coz need to concentrate on her study. 100,000 per month, enough for her living expenses. Rotary club scholarship is a very rich club and having branches around the world.
For degree student, you can only apply during 3rd and final year, but this only can apply when recommended by your selected university. For master student, around 140,000 per month for 2 years . And every month, you have to attend for the meeting of the club. You can gain lot of experience during meeting with the upper societies in Japan. Most of the members of Rotary Club is director of a company.
My gf study in Public University, the tuition fee per year is around 600,000 yen. In her 1st, 2nd and 3rd year, she got 50% deduction on her tuition fee. So around 300,000 yen per year cost her for the tuition fee. Is around RM9,000 per year, cheaper compare to private university in Malaysia. Unluckily, she can't get reduction on her tuition fee during final year, may be because she already got her scholarship.
For the accomodation, she stayed in the university hostel until 3rd year of her study. Around RM150 per month ( not included the electricity and water usage ), unbelievable cheap price! Even in Malaysia, you can't get a price that cheaper than that, haha! In 4th year, she moved to cityhall hostel, around RM300 per month, coz i went Japan to visited her. Still very cheap! A room that included kitchen and bathroom.
Next year she will graduate. While most of the Malaysia graduated students still panic about their career, she already get a job offer in Tokyo, Japan during study in third year. This the benefit to study in Japan, the university students in Japan will start seeking their job while studying in final year. A lot of career fairs will be held in Japan.
Cheers! Enjoy ur study in Japan.

[quote=mumeichan,Jan 3 2007, 06:33 PM] I am thinking about studying in Japan too and I can tell you you will need 5-10k ringgit a month for living expenses. It is very hard to do with less than 5k. I think that spending less than 20k for 4 years for living expenses is bs. It is not possible unless someone else is paying for you. 5-10k = 150,000 - 300,000 yen. Wow, your predicted expenses is too much for me. It depends how you spend in Japan. If you want to save money, you better cook yourselves. 20k for 4 yeas is not possbile, if you get a scholarship or work hard in part-time job .But to master the language is quite hard. One standard and recognised Japanese language test is the JLPT which has four levels. Level 1-3 is can be passed with 2-3 years of learning Japanese and speaking it as well, with a vocab of 2000-3000 words and their respective characters. But the JLPT level 4 is a very hard test that alot of Japanese themselve fail. lvl 4 is the easiest. lvl 1 is the hardest, most of my friends spent 1 and half years to pass the level 1 exam. 2-3 years, a bit long. This post has been edited by re-killer: Jan 4 2007, 05:58 PM

Is not difficult to get a halal food in Japan, but is expensive. My Malay friends always order the meat by telephone, and the company will courier the halal stuffs to their house.
Money is not a big deal for them. 140,000 yen scholarship per month from JPA, and without paying any tuition fee. Envy them!
