I'm studying and staying here in Tokyo (yesh, central Tokyo. Akihabara is 2 stops from my house) biggrin.gif

My Japanese language is just basic survival stuff - I came here not under any govn' sponsor at all, so I have no 1-2 years of those language learning - I just arrive here and tembak my way every single day, mixing my english with my malay with my japanese biggrin.gif i dun even know chinese, curse words i know lar tongue.gif

Life here lepak onli for a regular kopitiam guy like me, just need to know what to say and where to find cheap places to buy stuff (and in my case, know where to buy halal food).

It has been since April 2006, and I'm still alive here in my room.
Everyday learn new stuff, everyday sure got funny experience with the japanese ppl.
If a simple guy like me can do it, I think anybody also can laa biggrin.gif

Wow, that sounds fun. However I bet the first few weeks when you arrived in Japan is tough.
Anyway sorry if this question is asked before, what are you studying in Japan? How many more years to go?

I am thinking about studying in Japan too and I can tell you you will need 5-10k ringgit a month for living expenses. It is very hard to do with less than 5k.

I think that spending less than 20k for 4 years for living expenses is bs. It is not possible unless someone else is paying for you.

---

To learn to speak the Japanese language and communicate using it it not a very hard thing to do. The Japanese Grammar is not the hardest grammar in the world, I find it easier than English.

But to master the language is quite hard. One standard and recognised Japanese language test is the JLPT which has four levels. Level 1-3 is can be passed with 2-3 years of learning Japanese and speaking it as well, with a vocab of 2000-3000 words and their respective characters. But the JLPT level 4 is a very hard test that alot of Japanese themselve fail.

wow. i'm a bit confused. can someone clarify the issue of living expenses? one says an average rm400 p/m is sufficient, while another claims rm5k p/m is the minimum shocking.gif ?? encik firedauz, mind clearing this up for me based on your personal experience?

ok another thing, i just completed my SPM last year and currently am waiting for my results to be released. i plan to take up an engineering course just like the TS.. i would like to study abroad, and my top two destinations is either germany or japan.. however, i'm unsure what my next step should be. if i wanna go to japan, what pre-u programme should i take? and does any pre-u programme have the japanese language included inside the syllabus? any help will be appreciated.

on a sidenote, mr firedauz, is it difficult to find halal food in japan?

i've done abit of research and i believe the pre-u course at IBT would be the best choice (please list down other alternatives).. however, i got one question, how much is the total cost of the pre-u course at IBT?
and why does the april intake take 18 months while the jan intake only takes a year?

I must say I don't know about the details of engineering programmes, totally not my field of research. I can answer the general questions though:

I don't know how any, even a Japanese themselves, can survive with RM400 every month. RM400 is around 13,000 Yen here. To me and everyone else here, 1,000 Yen is easily spent everyday - be it food, transportation, anything. And that does not count into the accomodation rent, the bills, and lots more. Even if one is working, limiting to just RM$400 is out of the question, not even any Japanese themselves would do that. I say RM$5,000 is the basic, most reasonable amount monthly here.

Halal food is not that hard to find in Japan. Like I said, even a simple guy like me can find them - I just Google it up and boom everything came up tongue.gif

Here's one for you biggrin.gif ---> http://www.google.com/search?q=tokyo+halal...:en-US:official

5-10k = 150,000 - 300,000 yen. Wow, your predicted expenses is too much for me. It depends how you spend in Japan. If you want to save money, you better cook yourselves. 20k for 4 yeas is not possbile, if you get a scholarship or work hard in part-time job rclxms.gif .

lvl 4 is the easiest. lvl 1 is the hardest, most of my friends spent 1 and half years to pass the level 1 exam. 2-3 years, a bit long.

Is not difficult to get a halal food in Japan, but is expensive. My Malay friends always order the meat by telephone, and the company will courier the halal stuffs to their house.

Money is not a big deal for them. 140,000 yen scholarship per month from JPA, and without paying any tuition fee. Envy them!

Hehehe yeah, that's what the shopkeeper told me since I stayed besides his shop.
They always receive calls from people far away from Tokyo and they just send by courier service to those houses.

For me, I just walk out of my house & buy straight from their shop.
Simple as walking to the kedai runcit back in KL.

Except that the weather is cold lol rclxm9.gif

japan is a good place to study and of course work coz you can be RICH there. hahaha

but my senior got jpa scholarship to do diploma in japan. now he regrets it. coz he need to spend more than 4 years to get only a diploma. and it is very hard to get job in malaysia coz the base degree you learned is in japanese so to employed in a non-jap company is quite slim. ( thats what he told me) and he also need to compete with the jap there in japan to get a job.

but i may be wrong and only a stranger to you. so you choos wisely where to go and what to do. i detest to go japan coz of the food is not delicious. smile.gif

Hi,,

Four years to get a diploma? Is it the default duration or there was time lost in between for perhaps failing subjects or anything?

And about the food, yes I personally feel the most of the food is quite bland, except if you go to restaurants for good food which translates to high costs also
