Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak has approved the first request of newly minted Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah for an RM15 million allocation to build a complex for small time traders in Kuala Muda.

Ahmad Bashah made the request in his speech during the official launching of the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Sungai Petani by Najib.

"As the new MB, I would like to help small traders to get a proper place for them and at the same time it will boost their business.

"Therefore I hope our prime minister can allocate us RM15 million to build a special complex for small time traders in Kuala Muda," he said in his welcoming speech during the event.

Najib approved the request to applause from about 5,000 people who were present at the event.

In his speech, Najib said the government had taken special measures to cope with the uncertain world economic climate.

"The economy has been challenging and by revising the budget like how it was done recently, I believe that the measures taken will help us tackle the situation," he said.

He also stated that the country had been recognised by many international bodies such as the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the World Bank for its stable economic growth.

"In 2015, Malaysia was ranked as the 20th country that performed better than 144 countries across the globe while the World Bank has reported that Malaysia is ranked 18 among 189 countries, beating Taiwan (19), Switzerland (20), Thailand (26), Netherlands (27) and Japan (29) in terms of economic performance.

"Beside the World Bank and WEF, we also ranked second in Asean in terms of economic growth behind Singapore and according to Bank Negara, Malaysia is the sole country in Asia with a 4.7% economic growth," he said.
