Is there any difference?
The 100Mbps still can't be fully utilised, Unifi currently max is 50 Mbps, which is just 50% of the Cat 5 capability.
Yes, in terms of speed, Cat-5 and the later Cat-5e are able to handle up to 100Mbps. Infact Cat-5e is more than enough for normal internet use.
Cat-6 however has several advantages. It's got larger conductor size which provide less noise (attenuation), for this Cat 5e cable has a tendency to have a higher delay and skew than Cat 6 cable. Cat 5e may have a longer delay for the signal to get from one side to the other, which will give the appearance that it runs slower. This is particularly of importance for online gamers.
Another feature of Cat 6 cables is it has a very tight twist length to reduce crosstalk interference between pairs.
These properties of larger conductors, internal dividers, and tighter twist lengths delivers better performance and more capacity then Cat 5e.
If you plan to pull quite a lengthy Lan cable, you may want to consider Cat-6 cable. Otherwise Cat 5e is all you need.
