This coming CNY I'm going back to my hometown Sandakan. Previously I always take MAS but since the economy not so good, I have to take Airasia with 20KG check-in baggage on the way back to KL.
According to Airasia Website
AirAsia (AK, FD, PQ, Z2, I5 and QZ Flights) and AirAsia X (D7, XJ Flights): Frozen seafood and fresh produce cannot be accepted as checked baggage. However, Frozen seafood and fresh produce may be accepted as hand carry baggage, subject to the destination’s Quarantine regulations. Provided that such items are properly packed to our satisfaction and meets the cabin baggage weight and size limitations, if dry ice is used to carry these items (in cabin baggage), then a maximum of 2.5 kg of dry ice per guest is permissible in the cabin. Acceptance of such items is at our discretion and we reserve the right to refuse carriage.
Last time I took MAS, i can easily bring 20KG frozen seafood.
Any exception for Airasia? Anyone check-in frozen seafood before from East Msia to West Msia?
Airasia's policy on frozen seafood has been in place for many years; can only hand-carry. Long ago when they first started flying to SDK, we could check in frozen seafood. It was stopped because of passengers complaining that their bags and clothes were stained by melted ice water, and smelled of fish.
There are ocean products companies still sending many styrofoam cartons of seafood by air cargo every day, but I believe their goods are stored away from ordinary luggage, and are also very well packed to minimize spills and leakage.
I have seen Airasia refusing to accept passengers' frozen seafood at the check-in counters in SDK, so I strongly suggest you only hand-carry (and make sure your packing is good!). If you wish, you can also double-confirm it with the Airasia staff and the frozen seafood shop in SDK airport.
Edit: Addendum- Wong Yung Kee wholesale supermarket sells all the packaging materials you need. Styrofoam's at the top floor and thick plastic bags are at the 1st floor.
