Last night around 10pm a 4 mins ride (1km) cost me RM10 after applying GRABTNG code, with reason of high demand. Grab has became a hungry crocodile lately.

A metered taxi won't cost that much since the fare is regulated (for 1km distance, before 12am).

It is time for relevant authorities come to the ground and work to regulate the private e-hailing service here.

It was raining, apparently the metered taxi have been fully booked.

Uber and Grab using floating rate. Supply VS Demand.
Yes I agree with you. I waited for an hour before booking a ride today. rate going from 60+ and down to 30+. Normal rate will cost only 20+. but today it seems high demand all the time. I ended up booking at RM38.

Wow, seems this is a lucrative profiteering business. Sadly the government is turning a blind eye.

Save your breath, for your information SPAD doesn't regulate e-hailing fare or commission. Basically it is demand vs supply mechanism. Everyone else like u also order Grab like u, if it doesn't match sure will goes up to attract driver.

There is 2nd option which is Uber, and also option under "Grab Taxi" isn't it?
*
This is like asking people to move on to another mamak due to this particular mamak charge RM10 for a cup of plain water.

A friend of mine saying that in fact there are a lot of drivers around a particular area, just that they turn off the service and sit in the car waiting for the artificial floating rate maliciously push up by them because they know how the system work. Some drivers even work for the two companies simultaneously and switching between the services on and off regularly. Not sure whether these are true?

exactly. the demand is higher than supply, willing buyer willing seller.
u could wait for the rate to come down, or wait for taxi to become available, but there is no guarantee that taxi would use meter given that saturation.

and remember grab n uber is not charity, they are here to make profit.

There is a fine line between making profit and profiteering -- make or seek to make an excessive or unfair profit.

If fare too high, either u get a taxi or wait till midnight. The system is as such, make full use of it.
*
In order to push the fare down:-
1. Place a booking no matter how high is the floating rate.
2. Don't show up until the driver cancel the booking.
3. Now the charging rate for that particular area immediately go down.
4. Book again with much more reasonable price.

It works for Grab (there is no passenger rating to worry about).

Maybe you are right as I’m fooled by the Grab.

I've been using Grab sporadically since it was called MyTeksi and more recently Uber. I've never been able to get a promo code that was not fully redeemed. But I don't complain pun. That's because I really need to go where I need to go. My destinations are usually high fare, so a discount of RM3 or RM5 doesn't mean much to me.

It seems that in their war with each other for market share, Grab and Uber has been giving out so many discounts that it has created a kaki tempang culture in people. Too lazy to walk or use bicycle, use promo code get free rides. It has also created a lot of baby birds who always want to be fed discount codes.

I never understood anyway why Grab and Uber give free rides to kaki tempang people. These people will never use the service anyway if there's no promo code. As can be seen in this thread, when there's no discount, banyak complain. These are for profit businesses. They cannot give discounts all the time forever.

But now as a driver, I don't mind if Grab wants to give discounts to help me hit my incentives target. But I've also noticed in the past week, very few of my riders used promo codes, but I'm still able to get a lot of incentives. So there's still organic demand in the market.

And when people say RMXX for Grab and Uber is expensive, what are you comparing it to?
*
The promo code basically has no meaning if one would have the mindset of “free ride” as the rate have been inflated anyway. It just a marketing gimmick to attract people.

Hey cappuccino vs latte did you consider that there is one other option...for 1km...WALK. I used to do that many years ago...wont die one.

DIY option is always the cheapest.,,, if there is mamak charging $10 for plain water....bring your own water or go home make your own teh tarik.
*
I’ll walk the other time but there were two luggage along with me on that day. I just want a fair price comparable to metered taxi as general thought e-hailing always cheaper than taxi. This has opened my eyes for the hailing business in this country.

When there are more riders than drivers, the rate goes up to attract drivers to you, so that you can get a ride.

If you don't want to accept, other people accept, they get to go where they want to go.

If you don't want accept, you can go ask taxi whether they want to use meter or not?

I’m certain the coupon taxi will always entertain my business.

QUOTE(JohnL77 @ Oct 17 2017, 01:03 PM)
What is fair price to you, when you already said e-hailing is cheaper than taxi?
*
The ride shall be comparable to taxi which typically charge a km ride around RM5-7 the most. The fact now is Grab charge me RM15 or even higher before came down prior to the promo code for the same distance.

I hope one day the government may step in to regulate the private hailing industry like the aviation and telco industry. There is no way for a particular company to make unethical profit or practice profiteering causing economic distortion.

ok ok... so then why didn't you try to get the coupon taxi or hail a taxi that night??🤦
you have basically danced around all the very fair questions asking you if you could have got a taxi or not that night. it's not as if there's lesser taxis now with Grab. and even if you could have gotten a taxi.. very curious to know what are the chances they will follow the meter.
