When learning a song do u play by looking at the keys and use muscle memory to play or look at notes and play using finger memory of the keys?

I realize when I start learn a song I look at the notes then after a while I don't look at it anymore but play by looking at the keys to make sure I press the correct one.

The problem is after a while I can lose memory of the notes and play wrong.

Which is more correct? Look at notes or keys?

I mean I look at the keys cos sometimes will press wrong key if din look.

When learning will look at the notes but after a while will auto memorize it so no need look notes also know how to play.

U got same as me or when auto memorize still look at notes?

i guess all depends how much u practice...and the more u practice...the more muscle memory.
then also depends how advanced u are in reading and hearing.
u read the notes, u hear the notes in ur head, then ur fingers instinctively move to where there are supposed to go and know what to do...hence sometimes its more expresive or 'more feel'...
instead of just being like robot - read notes, fingers move...skipping the middle part.

I know what u mean. I also play like dat. I mean I am not 100% focus on the keys or notes la like looking where I press all the time. I also play by listening and feel the song. It's just I give 0% fuck on the notes and maybe 5-10% fuck on the keys to make sure I not press wrong key. It's also something like feel where my fingers go la.

I think u know what I mean right? How about u guys? Try to notice when u play your head look up or down.

Don't worry...it takes time to build good muscle memory on any musical instruments smile.gif Just keep playing+practice until 1 day u will notice u can add "more feel" on one single chord/note/sequence without forgetting the next 3-5 note after that. A good knowledge on music scale helps too btw coz improvisation matters when playing music.

Ya I notice the long white hair old man pianist and the fat round face keyboardist also look at their keys when play. I think what I do is correct la.

The concert so power. I wonder how long they practice to sync so many instrument. Bassist at start so power also. Malaysian band r?

Yalo. I think they play until no need look also can see the position in their mind already. I can only do for keys close to each other but when going to different octave keys need look to make sure lol

Japanese Jazz Fusion band Casiopea and The Square aka T-Square...they are international renowed band..some of the members are well known around the world especially Akira Jimbo,Japan's most respected drummer who is also my influence...he is known as the one man orchestra drummer...just watch some of his videos where both acoustic and electronic drums can make a whole entire band

I don't think it matters anyway unless I want to play some very weird chord then I would have to look at the keys to make sure the keys I press would produce the right sound
most of my playing are impromptu but usually when I need to play a certain chord,my fingers be there even on diff octaves laugh.gif

I would say if you memorize and use muscle memory, you would be able to focus more on the dynamics and come up with more improvisations (more/less complex) without really affecting the original tune.
