Hi all,

I'm posting some work in progress pics of my kitchen reno. Concept is from me while i asked my ID cousin to recommend a rough kitchen layout. The rest i worked it out with the contractor. Progress has been pretty slow but that's probably because i am taking my own sweet time as well. As you can see, it's far from finish. But the idea is there. Please be nice with comments. biggrin.gif

The white tiles are just normal 75mm by 150mm sized tiles. They're arranged at a 45 degree angle. Google herringbone tile arrangement. It's very labour intensive and will generate many wasted tiles since you need cut them to fit the edges. I also made it more difficult for the tiler because I wanted the tiles to flow from one wall to the other as if it was folded to wrap around the corners. If you zoom into the first pic, you can see what I mean.

There are many variations to tile arrangement. I decided to go for affordable white tiles for my back splash but arranged it in a more unique manner.

They call this a "shaker style" kitchen. Originated from US. This is my take on a slightly more modern version of the shaker style.

My countertop was just installed. And so were the cabinet handles. Pretty happy with the results so far. Let me do some future inspection. Hehehe

Love the tiles arrangement.
i dont personally like the cabinet color (coffee? Mocha?) But it look nice together with your tiles arranngement & sink.

I dont usually see people do a zig-zag cabinet in condo. Most people opt for a counter top style or just L-shape cabinet

Really good to see different design.
Good Job!!!

Hi Oxm8,

Thanks for the comments. Would like to hear more opinions for the forummers here. The cabinet colour is actually not brown but a dusty green colour. The lighting and my phone camera distorts the colour I think. And the colour of the cabinet itself seems to change alot depending on what kind of light is shown on it. And unexpected colour illusion maybe? Even I had problems describing the colour to my contractor at first because it seems to keep changing over different light sources. Look at the pic below for a better feel of the cabinet colour. The Z-shaped kitchen arrangement was actually because I had no choice. The condo layout forced me to decide to do it this way. An L-shaped kitchen would have been too tiny. I welcome more questions.

if you do some reading (on the internet) youd be worried about the 'fact' that it is NOT advisable at all to have renovations in this coming year of the fire monkey, depending on the map of your house, youd better check else it may not be to your 'satisfaction' other-than-the-new-kitchen wise

overall looks okay since you are not rushing to quickly completing the kitchen...having a nice perfect kitchen do need some time and a proper planning....one thing i notice if you could realigned the window to be centre between the left wall and the top hung cabinet should be just perfect... then installation of the blind should be dead on centre and will turn out nice.

cheers mate

Hi zzzhhhzzz.

These are not subway tiles. It's just normal white tiles. Can be found in nearly all tile shops. The subway tiles you're talking about are usually not totally flat like mine. The ones I used are just plain flat tiles. I can't quite remember how much it is per tile. I think it's rm 1.something per tile? I could be wrong. If I do the maths, seems to be around the same price per square feet

Hi Archid,

Unfortunately I'm living in a condo. I can't move the window. Hahaha. The other alternative is to make the top hung cabinets with less depth. I decided not to do that and just have proper normal cabinets.

I'm actually not sure if there's a concrete base. Hmmm. Kind of a newbie in Reno works. Things are on hold for now till after new year. I'll take a looksie this weekend to confirm it. I think the colour has been an either you love it or hate it colour. Abit divisive in opinions so far, colour wise.
