I have a poodle too Ladee... she is supposed to be miniature but grew up to be the size of a toy poodle... she is 3 years now... here are some of her pics...

I have 4 poodles. One apricot and 3 reds. Jinjer, Peanut, Cocoa and Inu.

I've kept Ladee for 3 years now & I know for sure there are no furballs in my house... their hair does drop but becoz of the think curly coat, the dead hair gets tangled in... that is y we need to comb them regularly... but overall poodles are very clean dogs & do not cause problems.. they are infact recommanded to ppl who have asthma & are hypo allergic...

Actually .. poodle no need to comb everyday one ler ... once a week enough already .. which means after shower lor but make sure before shower, ur poodles dun have any tangles if not the tangles will be worse
Check whether the ketiak there got tangles or not .. the neck there .. the stomach there .. alaaahh everywhere laa then can already lorrr

From my experience, should comb everyday with slicker brush.

I give her a run with the comb daily to keep tangles at zero... it also help to make her coat nicer... not too time consuming... it's great to do it daily... I treat it as bonding time... if u are really bz, keep the coat short & then combing process will be easier coz u'll hardly get any tangles... i alwiz tell ppl, one u keep a poodle, it's a breed for life...

my family has never kept a dog before for the past 20+ years, but xiaomao poodle fit into our life well & fast.

for the grooming part, u can learn to do it yourself (for those simple one, like nail cutting etc). Even do it at pet shop also wont cost you much, if you dont do it very often.

preparing to bring home a puppy is a huge thing... I like to think of it as welcoming home a baby... so all the basic essentials like sleeping place & some toys are called for... prepare urself especially emotionally & physically for some tough puppy parenting & training especially the toilet traning part... as cute as our poodle darlings are, they still need to be toilet trained... poodles can get very attached to u if there are not many family members around so be prepared for some real manja-ing... kekeke ...
I groom my poodle myself... outside it can range anywhere between rm60 to rm100 depending on where u send to... u'll probably need to send for proper grooming every 3 months the most... anything longer than that u'll have a real scary dog to handle... If u dun really have much time for grooming, i suggest u keep the coat short for easy maintainace...
one more advice, choose & pick carefully before u buy... try to avoid pet shops & puppy millers... it's heart breaking to hear frens bringing home puppies & loosing them after few weeks...

I toilet trained my Ladee on newspaper in one day... the secret is consitantcy which mean u gotta be there the whole time to take ur pup to the the paper toilet... they usually need to pee after nap & after makan... poo is usually after makan... somehow my Ladee has this face she shows when she need to go & she'll come & show her 'toilet face'... but some dogs takes longer so dun be discourage if ur future poodle dun pick it up in a day...

Heya, thanks for the advices!!! Great advices!! Help me a lot in taking care of a poodle. Don't worry - I plan to keep his fur as short as possible. I don't like long fur either - Messy and get all tangled up.

I don't plan to train him to pee poo on newspaper. Plan to get a container of toyogo box size but lower height. Then get some kinda plastic basket that have holes like siever and diy myself and put on top of the container - wanna make it like a "real" toilet. Fill in a low level of water in the container. And carry the poodle to make him sit on top of the "siever-like basket" everytime after he makan and nap. Make him know that is his "toilet" and he shud go thr when he wanna pee poo. Is it possible to train him in this way??

Wonderful plan... just gotta be more thoughtful bout the height & size of the toilet... if u ask me, with poodle, anything is possible... they are bty the secondmost smartest breed...

have u located a breeder?... any preference in colour?...

Not really with location of breeder but have been checking the price range from lowyat - those few ppl who sells dogs. As for colour - either white, brown or cream . Gender still not decided yet but most probably a female. Wud kinda food do u give to ur poodle? And do I need a cage or can jz tie it with collar and leash when i zzzz at nite?

yup all poodles, the other 3 belongs to another owner. nv seen them since then.....
it took xiaomao ard 2-3 weeks to understand the toilet training. not very difficult, but need patience.

I feed Nutro Choice Lamb & rice formula to my Ladee coz she has sensitive skin & I think she is allergic to chicken flavoured food as few times I bought for her, she developed red spots & got itchy all over... poodles can become very choosy eaters as soon as they learn that when they dun eat u start to provide variety, so try to resist & dun give in... I made that mistake with Ladee...

I m against all form of caging or chainning up dogs so pls forgive me if I sound 'rude'... if u are worried that ur puppy may roam & dirty all over the house, u may like to get a play pan instead... it's sort of act like a cage but more spacious & its durable with out a top... put a bed in there so ur puppy knows it's where he/she shud sleep, eventually they wud find a comfy sleeping spot & as they grow older, messing wud not be a problem... one piece is about 2" & u can get like 6 pieces to make a nice enclosure... in there u cud also include the toilet tray but dun place it too near the bed...

I gave Ladee soft toys like the beanies type for her to chew & play wif since day one I got her back & she never chewed on any of my household things...

Not mine, the other 3 belong to another owner. This place is a dog park located in JB. A good place for dogs and their owners to hang out.

My dog dun have fur problem also, so dun think need to worry that. Vet has told me that food wont cause fur problem, u want to feed them "char siew" also can
Xiao Mao now pee poo in his cage, his cage become his toilet and he roam freely inside the house. he sleeps in living room.

so far we have only spent RM10 on grooming etc. that RM10 is to pluck the hair grow in inner ears. becoz it's painful to the dog that is why we dont want to do it ourselves.

what about the body?... how do u manage?... how old is ur poodle now?...
I DIY everything coz here in KL can be expensive I am terribly worried about my Ladee getting infection... once a fren sent her 2 dogs for grooming & they came back with skin problems... when they send to vet, vet said maybe the grooming equipments not disinfected properly...

I pulg her ear hair once every 2 weeks & trim her coat every 1.5 months... got a pet grooming clipper specially for her...

Ic. I know what is play pen. I don't plan to lock her up either. Jz thought of getting a basket and put some cushion pad and towel in there for her to sleep in (her sleeping bed). THought of leashing her up jz for the first few days/weeks to make sure she's toilet-trained first so that she don't pee poo on my bed when not supervised. I sleep on da floor . When she's fully toilet-trained, then I won't leash her anymore lor - jz let her roam freely . I don't like to tie up a dog or cat - look kinda inhuman to me . So, that means I don't need to get a cage for her then. .

Is Eukanuba or Science Plan or Nutriedge good ??

Between, what is crate training?? I kept saying ppl saying they crate train their shihtzu.

In my thread, u mentioned something about getting the cert. So, u mean getting a poodle with MKA is important to prevent myself from getting cheated by the seller? I also don't really know how to differentiate. If the breeder tells me that's a toy, I'd also assume it's a toy . No experience in buying doggie.

paiseh to tell you that we seldom cut his hair, just let it grows "naturally". or at least i nv cut before, i dont think my little sis cut his hair often also (she is the official owner and caregiver, the rest of us are just his playmates and "resource provider"). that is why u will see our poodle looks a bit different from the typical one....

But ur poodle is really a cutie . I like the fur - hehe. If I want to groom myself , what type of scissor should I get?? But the first grooming, I'll leave it to the groomer at the shop. Try and observe how they do it and I'll know how to diy too - hehe. I cut my bf's hair spikey 3 times already

either u use normal scissors or get those special one from pet shop, personally i find that they are the same

u mean normal scissors for cutting hair ?? With the "teeth" one or without the "teeth" ? I got two scissors - one is normal scissor and one is for cutting layer - hehe.

Better go back to my studies. Tomorrow 2 papers and I'm not prepared yet.

but my friend got a dog very funny. everytime after his hair being cut, he will hide himself somewhere and dont see ppl other than for food (within the house ofcoz). according to my friend his dog feel "malu" (coz my friend only anyhow cut, he just wants his hair to be short).

Hahahahaa... cute little fella. First time hear dogs will also malu .. LOL . Then how often do u send him for the ear grooming thingy? I didn't know I have to pluck the fur from the ears. this is to prevent ear infection, dog's ears get infected easily. so must keep their ears clean and dry. long fur inside the ears can grow gems.
that was the 1st time we brought xiaomao to pluck his inner ear hair after so many months (he joined us on 07/10/06), end up kena lecture by the shop. they said cannot wait until it grows so long, got smell already. must do it more often, like ard 1mths+ once.

Yerrrr ... painful neh. Every month need to pluck some more. Ur poodle didn't struggle ??

Gud to know u are not the chain up or caged up type...

I've done survey on food at one phase coz I was obssessed with getting the best food for Ladee... I bought holistic food & also tried cooking but in the end I found that Nutro Choice suits my Ladee best & brings out good coat... I personally dun recommand Eukanuba & Science Diet coz if u look at the ingrediants, I feel these are expensive junk just selling brand name...

Not sure how Crate training is done coz i only used paper toilet training & my other dog, a MS only pees & poops in the garden... knows how to tell us when she needs to go...

I am dun encourage poodle with cert coz the gene pool is small... not name pure bred poodle with cert in Klang Valley as I know... I am worried that poodle with MKA cert are inbred which is not gud & may cause health probelms... unless for the past 2 years there are many more ppl who have imported poodles from abroad, I dun see the trens of in breeding changing...

plucking the fur in the ear won't be so painful one .. once your poodle get used to it, it won't struggle anymore .. juz stay there and let u do your thing. But have to make sure don't kena the skin/meat of the ear. Once terkena, MAYBE your poodle wont let you do it anymore in the future coz no sense of security already.

Xiao Moa shud be going thru coat change between 6 months to 10 months of age... now shud be ok to maintain but soon u may start to see matts all over so just gotta be watch that... diferent ppl have different preference on how to keep their poodle coat... I use to experiment with different styles but now stick to the common 'teddy bear' look...

i actually hav done a bit study for poodle although i dont hav one.. i know poodle wont shed like other breed tht's y it's one of my choice if i am going to keep a dog. some said poodle is quite barky but some said it's ok. mayb every dog is the same when they r new to the surronding, depends on how the owner train them.

something out of topic.. are there anything like certain breed is better wit certain brand of food?for example poodle better wit Nutro Choice, maltese better wit blackwood and westie better wit royal canin? or it's depends on the dog itself? coz i heard many ppl said blackwood is good..

I pluck out hair from Ladee ears every 2 weeks & use those ear cleaning solution to drop in her ears... magnumao is rite bout the ear cleaning... if u leave it to grow long, there are high chances that ur poodle may develop ear mites & that is not sumthing u'd wan... I usually drop some soliution in her ear & give it a lil' rub then pluck out the excess hair with a tweaser...

as for grooming, u can actually get those ikea kitchen scissors which comes in 3 in a set & that works very well coz of the sizes...

there are some poodles that develop eye problem commonly known as tearing... u gotta be aware of that... this can be an inherited problem or cud be cause by ear which are dirty or infected... there are some types of supplement u can feed to help the problem but it cannot cure it...

weather a poodle is suitable for appartment living or not depends... in terms of size i m sure they are but in terms of time & management u'll need to consider how much time do can u spend wif ur poodle... they are very affectionate & can be very active & needs to be stimulated with games & toys... my poodle is not yappy & she seldom's bark... she is however very socialble & loves company.. if left alone she'll go into depression...

I feel what brand of food each dog takes varies according to each individual dog itself... there is a general guide which u can find in the internet about poodles food but I find that not accurate... some poodles do well with blackwood but my ladee dun & she only takes to Nutro Choise lamb & rice formula...

Yalor .. Every dog food is good(i'm not talking about those very commercialised ones) but it won't be good unless your dog loves it and is suitable for it. So i suggest right you can go to any pet shop and ask for food samples to try at home first. To see whether they are suitable to what brand and which flavour of food.

How often do u guys bath ur poodle?
I heard from someone, tat u hv 2 bath them twice a week.....
I was surprise, cos i hv 4 poodles, i bath them once a week only, but i wipe their coat everyday am & pm after their meal
I also put cologne once a week.....

Then how do I make sure the poodle is really a pure breed TOY type? If later I got a wrong breed - quite ma fan coz I stay in condominium and it's not suitable for a standard size dog.

I'm staying in condo and I'm planning to get a poodle somewhere in June. Need to find out more information first before I get her. As with barking, I think it depends to the personal characteristic of the doggie. All dogs will bark but it really depends on the internal side of them. Jz like some babies always cry but some babies seldom cry. Correct me if i'm wrong on this concept .

And then, if u jz line newspaper on the floor, won't they stepped into their own urine?? Coz newspaper is slow absorbent of liquid. I wanna know more about the poo pee training thingy.

Sc@ryM@ry, the tearing thingy u mentioned, I searched in the internet and I know what is it liao. My friend's maltese also got tearing. I read in the maltese thread, they teach ppl to use 'corn starch' to rub on the tear wor. Will it work for poodle?

1 or 2 yrs +, brown just like the toy poodle selling outside, female.... her toy poodle looks like her.. just the size might be 15x bigger

1. U dont really need to wait for 30 mins.. juz look at what your dog is doing all the time(after meal). When they wanna she-she or poo-poo that time, they will always sniff around and when they found the right spot, they will turn in sniff+turning in circles. Upon seeing this, quickly transfer your puppy to the 'toilet'. Repeat this all the time, everyday after meal until your puppy gets the message.

2. Dogs, like human also need alot of fresh water everday. I personally dont provide water in bowls but i use the bottle (eheh i dunno what it's called but u can find it easily in pet shops) so u just put that somewhere so that your dog can have water all the time.

3. It is best to blow dry after bathing so that can prevent your dog from catching a cold and also your dog can be as clean as possible. When they are wet, if they lie down on the floor, their coat will easily stick with the dirtiness and germs on the floor. So their body will have the smelly odour very fast. Besides that, blowing dry will also make your dog's coat condition better just like human hair

4. Female is more easily trained. Male however , because of their natural instincts, they will tend to pee around to mark their territory. 1 male is okay .. but with other dogs coming to your place for visit, they will tend to pee around to mark territory.

5. You can buy any snacks u want for your dog. When they are still puppy, buy those snacks which they can bite very long and will help them clean their teeth and also prevent them from biting your belongings and furniture

I feel eeky bout raw food & plus feeding own prepared food, we wud not know for sure if our goggies have sufficient nutrients... I do know of ppl who strongly advocate raw... if u decide on that then u gotta look for lotsa info...

I bathe my Ladee once a week... just for the record, poodles are very clean dogs & if kept indoors, they dun get dirty much... they hardly ever smell too... another thing is that bathing ur dog too often is not recommanded coz it will strip away the natural oil which helps keep the coat nice & shiny... i dun use cologne coz heard from a fren some years back her dogs got terrible skin probelms after using them... naturally i became paranoid...

linage is improtant... do request to look at parents of the pup... the thing here in our country there are no guarantee given by breeders so that is y i say u gotta really scout around for the best breeders... i wud recammand that u go & look at pups from now & study the environment of breeders & make comparision... take some time during weekends to do that... the effort will be worth it coz u'll be able see for urself... just taking ppl's word for the trust usually dissapoints... since u've edi got few contacts, make gud use fo them...

may ppl experiment with different method on how to control the tear stains problmes but i personally have seen in frens dogs the best solution is taking the Shiny brand vitamin... it's liquid form & fed orally... the tearing problem shud not accur if the breeding stock are healthy & dun have the gene probelm... tearing caused by ear infection can be solved if ear infection is treated...

u dun need to wait 30 mins after food... u can take imidiatedly... my Ladee & RuYi usually poops strainght after food... take them to the designated toilet spot & let them walk about... when u see them makeing a circular walk, that means they wanna poo or pee...

fresh bowl of water shud be present at all times... i change the water twice a day, once in the morning & once in the afternoon after work...

I do blow dry my furkids... they get sun daily in the mornings for about 5 to 10 minutes in the garden...

if u are living in appartment, i wud recommand female coz they dun mark or spray on walls... however not all male dogs do that... if u are worried about females 6 months once heat, when they come on heat u can alwiz use a trainer pants... it works like a diaper but if nobody is at home to remove it for her to go toilet then that wud be a problem... having said that, my Ladee is very discreet about her heat & keeps herself very clean... we hardlt egt any stains in the house at all... I only use the trainer pants for my MS...

chew bones are gud & toys... it wud help keep ur poodle occupied when u're away... by & by u'll discover for urself what ur poodle likes & u can get her her favourite... a ball is alwiz gud

Hahahahaa ... if u can think of some other questions, jz post - Then we can learn more first before getting a poodle. I'm getting "HER" somewhere in June. Need to wait bf start working, then only can realy really really guarantee can feed her. If buy now, then only depends no my own pocket money - enuff for makan, not enuff for jabs and grooming. So, I dun wanna take the risk to get HER now. Later she suffer ; I sendiri also ma fan .

Does it mean I need to leave the water bowl or the water dispenser thingy there 24 hours ... BUT the food dish need to be removed and not to be put there 24 hours lar ..

LOL. If i alone jaga her - kenot neh. During holidays, I'm forced to go back to hometown and my parents dunno I'm going to get a doggie. If let them noe, mati ar . Later say I come West to study or play . HOlidays, my bf can jaga her lor coz he will be working and kento go back hometown.

U noe wud information that wasn't mentioned in here, jz post up and share with ME . The behaviour, playfulness, etc - I'm not so concerned about that coz I believe all dogs have their own personalities and it depends on how u teach and train them. So, it shouldn't be a problem for me. I'm only concerned about the pee poo thingy as to how to train. Later pee and poop on my tilam - mati.

u're rite... water must be present at all times but food shud be served accoring to time & if they dun eat within a certain time frame shud be removed...

I'll take some pics of Ladee toilet & show u later... she is very careful & almost never gets her lil' paw dirty... I have a tray & line it with newspapers... if just newspapers on floor u mayhave to put really think layers...

i kept thinking about the "stepping onto her own urine" thingy. Then I thought of getting something absorbent which would absorb the urine immediatley so she won't step on her own urine. THought of cats littering sand - but i think the sand would stick to her paw . Then thought of those littering crystal for cats - i think it'd be harsh on her paw - not too sure. Wud other options u guys use ?? or jz plain newspapers?

There is this absorbent pad esp. for dogs sold in pet shops. It is quite expensive though.. if i'm not mistaken it's around RM20 for .. dunno how many pieces

They absorb pee well and wont stink the house also

So u can train your puppy to pee on the pad too

U can use only newspaper initially to let her get used to the idea that she gotta pee where the newspaper is... slowly u can get those mats ppl used in public toilets so the area is raised a lil & she wud not stain her paw... I never have problem about this stepping on pee problem though... Ladee is exceptionally terrified of pee & poo so she is very careful not to stain herself... when she pee, she balances herself & usually as she squad, one of her hind lig is lifted to up to avoid the pee from stainingher paw... immidiately after pee, she'll leave the tray....

some ppl toilet train thier pups using cages... when the pup needs to pee & poop, they will go in the cage... becoz the cage is elevated formthe tray there is no problem about staining but bare in mind poop willnot go thru the wires...

okay, no problem. right now i am discussing bout good breeder wit her. see where can get responsible and nice poodle breeder hehe.. but she said better go to meet the breeder n see the parent, surronding myself. mayb i will invite her to go wit me la since she so pro.. once is confirm, i will let u know, then u see u wanna join or not la

By the way, roughly how much do you guys spend on your poodle per month?? Estimate the costs to the cost of a toy poodle inclusive food, grooming, jabs, etc.

Mine is all female.... i dun wanna breed them.... IT's toy poodle

i also planing to have a toy poodle, i enquiry for the price, mini poodle is 550 - 750, toy poodle is 850 - 1000, of course no cert. got cert is very expensive, i think i will buy it on february, march or april.

home breeder is cheaper compare with the pet shop, and scare pet shop will use mini poodle cheat you. because when they are baby, they just the same, only when they grow up u only know are they is toy poodle or mini poodle.

and difficult to find lo...T.T

i ask 1 breeder yesterday her price is RM800 but is male. dark brown in common ppl call that is red color, a very nice color. but RM800 i can't have now T.T..

so wait 1 or 2 month more lo, so can save more money.

and today morning i ask 1 is RM700, havent see the pic yet, so dunno. ^^

There're ppl selling Toy Poodle in Garage Sales, you can go have a look. Can't reveal the name here as it's against the rule for advertising

the price is an issue but most important is that if u pay so much money, u shud be guaranteed a good pup in all aspects... sad is that even with MKA u rarely get a genuine pure breed... they stae is MKA but the To poodle may come out as a mini!...

Yealor, even if it has a MKA cert oso cannot guaranteed it's a pure breed... i heard tat cert can be made if got money... only option to get a guaranteed pure breed with MKA is through reputable breeder....

RM700 wit cert or without? so far the cheapest i came across is RM650 without cert. since i never plan to get it now, i didnt bother to contact the breeder. so dont know now available or not

since many ppl said hardly can get pure breed, no point to insist on cert now. I suggest anyone who want to get a poodle from breeder, go to the breeder n hav a look of the surronding, the pups parent, ask as many questions as possible, to make sure ur breeder really know n care bout the pups they breed. Try to interact wit the pups also.. u dont hav to rush, can always tell the breeder u need to think bout it 1st..

Food: Nuto Choise Lamb & rice rm27 (small bag can last about 2 months)
Shampoo: St Francis Skin care shampoo rm17 (can last about 2 to 3 months)
Vaccine: rm70++ for the 6 in 1 jab + deworming *u need to allocate this for the first 2 or 3 months depending on the pup's vacination record...
others: chew bones, toys, doggie t's: set aside rm10 a month .. but if u gonna buy clothes then cost more...
grooming: varies betwwen type of services rm20 to rm100

I generally spend less than rm50 a month...
