Hi Alll,

Am looking to buy a laptop for light microsoft office work (word/excel/ppoint etc) and also 3D rendering.

I have been told graphic processors better over the graphic cards as processors are meant for faster image production vs graphic card that is meant for better Output.

Im looking at the MSI g70 with 16Gb ram and geforce gtx970m installed.
Would this laptop be sufficient for 3D rendering? I know this utilizes a GCard, but im thinking if older model PCs could handle 3D, the 970m could.be good enough?
Edit : a friend also suggested a dell vostro with nvidia quadro / amd firepro gpu. Is that worth looking at?

On the side, with 970m i could also do some light gaming, but thats not important. Work is priority.

Please, really need advice. I know some will tell me to get a Workstation Pc as its cheaper but laptop is more convenient

Thanks in advance

What are you talking?

Graphics Card or Graphics Processor. This is basically same thing. For PC, it is a card so call it graphics card, for laptop it is a chipset, so call it Graphics Processor Unit (GPU).
A Graphics Card in PC inside is the GPU that utilize the power of graphics processing. PC Graphics Card always much powerful than laptop one.

If you are for 3D render purposes for example AutoCAD, you shall go for Nvidia Quadro not the Geforce series which is mainly design for gaming.

As for Nvidia Geforce GTX 970M you mention is not for light gaming, it is for heavy gaming, you can play nearly every games now in market with maximum highest quality setting.

Nvidia Geforce GTX 970M is already the 2nd most powerful gaming GPU in the market now. 1st goes to GTX 980M (they is another even powerful GPU call GTX 980 which is actually a desktop version but modified to fit inside the laptop).

Hi, I not sure what kind of 3D render you mention, for better in 3D render (not gaming) you really shall look for Quadro series where specifically design for it, Quadro had specific driver for those render software, that why it is so costly.

Hi bro ya few people tell me that. Some also tell me 970/980m can handle it, but maybe slightly slower than quadro.

Hi sorry bro. Its dell precision. Precision 15 7000series

I have done survey yesterday perhaps some forumer can vote. Coz both also i feel has own attraction.

15" MSI gs60 - i7 6700hq . 16GB ram . 1TB HDD . 256GB SSD . GTX970M . RM9299

15" Alienware - i7 6700hq . 16GB ram . 1TB HDD . 256GB SSD . GTX 980M . 1 time accidental damage warranty . RM 8599

17" Asus ROG G752VT - i7 6700hq . 24GB ram . 1TB HDD . 128GB SSD . GTX 980M . RM 8999

Alienware has 1 time repair/replacement for accidental damage even if i drop it or spill water etc
MSI gives me the perception that its more stable but its 970M and most expensive.
Asus has 24gb ram but 17" maybe too heavy and bulky.

Also, some people tell me 980m only can use full potential with UHD screens and 1920 FHD screens cannot display true potential. Is this true?

If you about to do rendering for a long term, getting a quadro would be a better choice. But that is gonna be very pricey. And if you really have decided to get a laptop, get the Dell Alienware. The aftersales service that Dell offers is superb, 128GB SSD is not really enough for a long run. And GTX980 would definitely perform much better than the GTX970M. 17" as a laptop is really too big and heavy to myself. I have a friend that carries a 4kg laptop around everyday, and he regretted that. sweat.gif

Good luck in hunting! biggrin.gif

Hahaha yea 4kg is no joke man.
Do u know if its true 980M cant output its max potential coz of the laptop screen limited to 1920 × 1080 resolution?
