Editing video files, audio to 5 channel sounds

Hello,
Hope i'm at the right category, i have this avi files which is in xvid and divx accordingly.All of them are in stereo mode, so when i play them in my home theatre all i get is the front channel.So, i wanted to convert my avi audios to 5.1 channel or surround sound.At least not stereo.So, i have to extract the audio's from the avi and convert them to ac3 ?
