Planned to buy the device online, but a bit worried about having a nearly 2k item sent via courier and COD is too far away....

I've never bought anything more than RM200 online, a bit hesitant to buy something almost 2k..

What do you guys think? Should I just buy it online????? I've looked for it in so many physical stores, in Penang and Ipoh, none are selling it. Only lowyat, but when I went there, they were OUT OF STOCK!!!!!

Should I buy it online?

I had bought phone n even tablets online from overseas sellers for past 8/9 years n never faced any problem. Local online sellers from Lazada, 11th Street, Lelong , Directd, Satugadget etc too many times already
Just make sure you buy from a reliable seller
Buying online s normal these days

Ahh. I think most lelong merchants are trustworthy. My concern is more with the courier service, parcel loss, damage etc. They don't cover if the goods is damaged in the process of delivery or the parcel got lost somehow. I know the chances of that happening is probably not that high... But still. 2K is not a small number for me....

Anyway, I have made the purchase via lelong... The merchant will ship with GDex and I have paid 2% extra for GDex ELC to extend the coverage, in case of any mishap. Otherwise normal coverage is up to RM200 only...

Should receive item on Wednesday if all goes smoothly

Mi5 or not to Mi5

Slept over it last night, read some reviews this morning, now I find my self interested in it again.

For all the Mi5 Chinese rom users out there, if you install google services, google play, does it mean you can use it like a normal phone, ie whatsapp, waze etc...., sync with google etc....

If MIUI weekly update will it uninstall google stuff?
and redo all again?
http://xiaomitips.com/guide/install-google-play-store-miui/
or is it only if they do major update like MIUI 8.0?

Am using the mi5 64gb version. So far so good. The phone I got had a custom ROM installed with all kinds of bloatware and adware installed. Had to spend some time to learn how to flash the original miui7 China developer edition. So far no problem with it. Manage to install all the Google Apps. Pretty good experience after getting that crap bloatware riddled custom ROM removed.

ok i have just spent the last hour reading first few pages from page 1 then it got boring and skiped to 50, read all the way to page 60.

now my concern is with miui as user has pointed out its bloated.
global rom is buggy, stick with chinese rom.
so so camera.
other then that i actually love the looks of Mi5 and the curve at the back looks amazing to hold, not like the s7 edge, feels awkward to hold with the inverted curve.

even tho i can get MI5 64gb for RM1450 directly from china i think i will give it a pass now.
currently own honor 7 but have not used it much (hate the laggy camera), was going to give it to my dad and upgrade to mi5. with all the issues with unstable and ap set warranty issue
i think i will just get honor 8 when it comes out or the huawei P9 looks good but around 2k tho.
for simplicity i think huawei is good, as its got good customer service in malaysia. hardware is ok

one plus 2 or 3 sounds good with cynogem mod. but i never was every interested in it to begin with mostly coz it cost a lot, prefer to stick to larger manufacture, eg xiaomi, huawei, lenovo=no i think its got too much problems)

yeh i wish MI5 had stock andriod or cynogen mod, I would so buy it if it was available.

Don't pass on the chance to get it cheap man. Buy it. 1450 is a good price for a 64gb version. The in case ur phone gets the bloatware installed by the reseller, just flash the China developer ROM. I'm using it now. And it's good. Just install the Google Apps and it'll be like the global ROM, but with more frequent updates. All stock Chinese apps can be un installed easily.

Care to post the links to the resources need to accomplish that?

I manage to flash the China Developer ROM onto my mi5 using the tutorial here,
http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/sear...1&hl=en&ct=clnk

combined with

http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthrea...tra=#pid5226412

All these can be accomplished without unlocking the bootloader.

The main information is from the first link. Everything works as described in the article, except that EDL mode is changed in newer version of the ROM, to enter EDL mode, the command is "fastboot oem edl" rather than "adb reboot edl"

You should be able to flash the China Developer ROM by following the tutorial in the first link, except for the part of asking you to enter "adb reboot edl". Key in "fastboot oem edl" instead and it should work.

Kind of scary letting someone else mess with the Rom & install something inside...who knows it contains some spyware. Bad apps are memory and battery draining too. Maybe those china ppl think giving us more is better but its actually opposite.
*
Stock China Developer ROM comes with some apps pre-installed, but at least they are not adware, and can be removed without root.

The custom ROM that came with my phone is absolutely the worst! It caused so many problems when I first got the phone. I can't playback videos, I cant even play back the videos I recorded with the phone camera. I get advertisements pop up every now and then. Ads are shown in the charging screen when my phone is being charged.

I didn't know that I had a custom ROM installed and thought it was xiaomi's fault, giving me all these adware riddled piece of crap. It wasn't until I posted on the MIUI forum that I realised I got a phone with custom ROM installed.

Had some trouble flashing the stock China Developer ROM, but things turned out great when I finally got to flash the original ROM.

What's new with MIUI8 compared to MIUI7?
MIUI8 is still in beta stage right, I guess I'll wait for more stable versions before updating to MIUI8

how did the custom rom got inside your phone? ohmy.gif

The MIUI forum seem to indicate that a lot of China reseller like to flash custom ROMs to the phones they sell. I guess they must be earning profits from those adwares as well...

QUOTE(gedebe @ Jun 20 2016, 10:40 AM)
can I use the usb-c to usb micro converter for the this phone?  Anyone using it?
*
I'm using one for my power bank. Charging is not as fast as the original cable. Proven by using Ampere app as well to measure the current runnnig through it. which tops at around 1000mA, but mostly below as compared to the original which can go up to 3000mA

Now that oneplus 3 is out with much better specs.... 6GB of ram, Double the mi5's! Sigh... Bought this phone a little too early I guess.. Maybe should've waited a little longer...

Were you using powerbank with qc 2.0/qc 3.0 suppported?
Otherwise it's just normal charging
*
Sorry I misspoke. I meant I use the USB converter for my Powerbank use. When tested using the charger included it gives a very low current as compared to the stock cable

Does the OS know how to maximise the 6 gb ram?. Let it be 10GB ram...

Software can be upgraded be it through official ROM that may come latee or custom ROM. Sadly ram is fixed and can't be upgraded.

BTW I got my USB converter on lelong.com.my

Any where I can get Benson leung approved cables for cheap? So far found remax and yoobao usb-c on lelong. None are Benson leung approved. Are xiaomi usb-c cables adherent to the USB standard? I was looking at his Google plus page. Didn't find xiaomi cable there

Just bought myself a Mi5, but sadly random reboot occasionally happens and the download apps bugged/autocrash.. Which i could say almost similar problem facing on mi4c
*
not sure where you got your phone from. but just make sure your reseller didn't flash a custom rom for you which are often riddled with bugs... that's not to say that the official miui is without bug, but should be less i guess. my phone came with a custom rom that is riddled with bugs and adware! flashed the official china developer rom now.. much better
