ECC RAM is more to server side, to prevent crash bsod all that minimized dataloss..
For you,,3D engineering design which means, xeon e3-1231v3, 16/32gb of ram, and 1TB SSD, GTX 980ti should be suffice =D

Professional workstation uses workstation-grade graphics card like Quadro (NVidia) or FirePro (AMD) for better (read: more stable) performance. Same goes to RAM of the ECC type. Of course the cost is exorbitant as you use them in business (read: earning profit and possibly get credited for your work).

For your case, my vote goes for workstation. I believe that you do not have to carry your work around and work will be on the long hours side. CPU comes with better cooling and in a way is longer lasting in that sense.

Are you running AUTOCAD btw?

I think with a budget below 10K, you can get one that runs perfect.

Yes, also running 4D cinema, 3D mds. Cause my boss have plan to build one over RM20K budget with Xeon CPU & Quadro K5000 card on desktop. And he also found out got laptop same budget RM20K with Xeon CPU & M5000m Quadro. So he ask me which one is worth for use and want me research and give him an answer.

Hi JackieJack88,

Workstations are highly customisable and depends on which CAD/CAM software you're using. For Digital Content and 3D rendering you will need a large amount of RAM and a powerful Quadro card.

Top range models from MSI include the following.

MSI WT72 6QM
Intel Xeon Processor - E3-1505M
Nvidia Quadro M5000M 8GB DDR5
32GB DDR4 ECC RAM
256GB Super Raid 4 (PCIe GEN3) + 1TB 7200RPM HDD

It supports multi display using HDMI and new USB Type-C Thunderbolt port so very good for editing and content creation.

good luck and happy shopping! rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

My boss have told me before said he have saw a laptop come with XEON CPU and M series Quadro card around RM20K. I think this spec you gave, no wonder is MSI brand. I though is Dell. Ha.
Anyway, how much for this one? Any discount if my company need it?
Cause RM20K around my boss can get a desktop with Xeon CPU and Quadro card. Which one is worth for? Any suggestion? notworthy.gif

you should expect it to be more expensive as it offers portability and versatility

i prefer you to get a mobile workstation because it is easy to carry out and do demostration to client. MSI do have mobile workstation that been certified by ISV and it can handle a complex calculation for rendering. it is a good choice to choose MSI workstation. thumbup.gif
