Thanks for the info.

So anywhere to find small quantity green beans? Maybe we should organize a trip to a local roaster haha
*
I have been buying green beans from here http://triumviratecoffee.com/ since last year.
This is the only place I know that sells green beans in small batch (250g) in Malaysia.

i have Breville smartgrinder for 2 yrs and never had issue for cinnamon roast when roasted properly  . had issue when i used whirley pop roaster  long time ago,  so far non with my current drum roaster even when bean drop immediately just after few FC sound , even for high density beans. maybe i have not try many high density beans. the grinder is no where durable compared to semipro model. Thinking to get Sette 270w for espresso grinder and the breville for filter coffee. what do u think?

I am currently using Whirley pop roaster. If you dont mind sharing, what kind of drum roaster are you using right now? Thinking of getting one as well.

Sorry to butt into this conversation (as you had directed it to kucau ), but very excited to find another home roaster!

You might want to check out the Kaldi Wide stove top drum roaster, which I recently acquired a few months ago. I got this Korean-made roaster through Qoo10.my for just over RM 2k with free courier service, which is amazing as the Korean online sales site GMarket actually sells it for more. Just checked and it's still available.

I've roasted over 15 times and must say the experience has been great! The control over development is orders of magnitude better than my previous setup, being a heat gun. There's no control of airflow, but the passive convection airflow seems to be sufficient.

Always glad to see another home roaster as well smile.gif

Thanks for the suggestion. The roaster looks pretty neat. Need to start saving if I'm getting it tongue.gif
Once I moved to my own place maybe I can consider your setup.

Anyway, I am not too technical in terms of coffee roasting, I normally roast coffee by color, sound and smell only(main agak2 lol)

Wanna ask here if anyone can point me in the right direction to get a good coffee grinder?

Was previously using manual portable grinder for my beans but few days ago the plastic holding the burr got too loose and now it can't grind beans anymore as it will just rotate in the same position.

Did a little research on the Baratza Encore and the Breville BCG600sil. Was wandering if there is any other grinder that is slightly cheaper that will perform almost the same as I'll be mainly using with my v60.
*
For pour over, why not go for those Taiwan coffee grinder, (Akira, Feima ).
Something like this. http://www.coffeeritual.com/index.php?id_p...troller=product

Is Akira Grinder any good in terms of grind consistency and for espresso? I can hardly research the brand and mostly because I can't read Chinese  sweat.gif
But will check it out as I saw online some local stores are selling them
*
Need better grinder for Espresso from what I heard. Anyway, Akira,Feima, Eagle, got lots of brand, but actually made by the same company, rebranded into multiple brand.
But for filter/pour over, its pretty good considering its price. (about 500 -600+)

I have been looking at this coffee roaster. Capacity about 150g which is just perfect for me. I am currently using whirley pop corn roaster.

https://world.taobao.com/item/521305293183....543573.3.0ZVktz

Price is about MYR 800++ , chaff collector and bean cooler are sold separately.

What do you guys think?

Interesting. Sorry but I can't read Chinese; does this come with any form of air flow control? From the design it looks like it's controlled by the chaff collector (which has a cool cyclonic design). If so I wouldn't consider it without the chaff collector.
*
I can't read Chinese too. I guess you are right, the chaff collector seems to also act as an exhaust fan for the air flow control (which cost another MYR 700).

I am considering getting this roaster(without additional accessories) soon. I can always add on the accessories later on.

Fully concur about the chaff, especially for some beans (like the Kintamani batch I just got).

I would also have concerns about baking the beans without adequate forced airflow, because this roaster uses a solid glass drum. The Kaldi I'm using has a perforated drum and lots of vents, and even then I have a feeling roasts can be better with even more airflow.

.... however I get the feeling this blows your expected budget...
*
Good point. At that price range, I might as well go for Kaldi Wide like the one you are using. Build quality seems better too.
I guess I might just stick with my current setup for now while surveying for other(cheaper) roaster.

Btw, where do you normally get your beans?

Interesting...

Before going for cupping session, need to train my palate first. Can't even identify coffee notes yet.
Last time when I went for beginner home brewer training, the trainer did taught some basic palate training, but I already forgotten all.

I am what coffee snob described as "people with uneducated palate" Lol.

Anyone here into cold brew?

Tried it a few times on my Hario Mizudashi cold brew maker.

Still prefer my normal pour over/drip/aeropress coffee.

Plus the ratio of coffee beans to water are insane.

What's the ratio that you're using?

I find that 70g of beans to 1 L of water gives a good brew. 16hrs brewing gives a rather concentrated brew so 1L can be dliuted down to about 6-7 250ml cups.
*
I was using 1:10 ration (1 part coffee , 10 part water)

Normally I make about 500ml which is using 50g of coffee.

Another issue I had with cold brew is the fine ground in the coffee. Probably due to my grinder. (using Breville smart grinder BC820)
Normally I would end up with lot of fine ground in the coffee so I had to filter it again using a paper filter.

On this thread, lots of people. In fact, would be willing to bet most have multiple coffee brewing apparatus. Not just espresso machine (with a huge range in quality & price), but Syphon, moka pot, Aeropress, numerous drip-based like v60, Chemex, clever dripper, even cezve for Turkish coffee!

Always a matter of personal preference tempered with economics & practicality.
*
Absolutely agree on the point regarding the economics and practicality.
I myself owned multiple coffee brewer, but could not bring myself to invest in an espresso machine(yet).

To be honest, it just looks like a normal conical burr grinder to me.
Maybe the reason its so expensive its the oak wood they used for the grinder's body.

Normal 63mm conical burr that’s has zero retention can be found lower than usd$500? Can share the product?
*
No idea tongue.gif .

From my beginner's point of view, I can't really tell apart the difference

Noob question: Does the zero retention in the grinder can make huge difference for filter/drip coffee?

let's talk manual grinders.  nod.gif
what grinder are you using and your opinion is...?

i am using a hario skerton (not the plus). it holds up to
100g. while this grinder is value for the marnee, there
is still room for improvement on burr structure design.
and hario did just that. they added a stabilizing plate
and name it as skerton plus. the stabilizing plate min
the wriggling of the inner burr substantially.  do NOT
buy the old model. skerton is one of the recommended
grinders for entry level. price is RM160-170.

i am now looking for a second grinder and will modify
the skerton  thereafter... brows.gif

Am using Porlex grinder currently.
Bought it on Ebay 2 years ago for about MYR 2++ if I remember correctly.
Now using it at my office since I bought electric grinder for home use. (Breville Smart Grinder pro)

Based on my experience, its not really good for coarse grind(very inconsistent grind size) ,
For medium / fine, OK.

Thinking of buying a china made grinder for office use.
Next year perhaps.
